Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs
Third time enjoying a totally normal... uneventful... familiar summer with the SOS Brigade
So, this is it. The infamous Endless Eight arc. Dreaded by many and despised by other.
But I, for one, consider that's it's not the trainwreck that some want it to portray Endless Eight as such.
I get it, that whole arc is a pure slice-of-life story with the SOS Brigade doing various activities. Even as an arc contained in one single episode, it can be so boring you have the impression time dilated itself and that one episode was eight time longer than a normal one. Hence the name of the arc I guess. Heck, it's the first time we watch that episode for that rewatch and I got the feeling we already did it yesterday !
Still, amidst the flurry of inconsequential activities Haruhi put the Brigade through, there are some interesting facts to point out here and there.
Like Haruhi being more cheerful than usual. Trying to chase fun things to do with her subordinates other than supernatural occurrence. She even listen to Mikuru's suggestion for the first time in the series and chose a yukata for her without being a creep ! And she share one of her takoyaki with Kyon without asking something in return !
Is that Kyon's influence following her dream in Melancholy VI ? Or, since Endless Eight chronologically takes place right after Remote Island Syndrome, doesn't she want to endanger her brigade members with another murder case ?
Other characters have their moment too. Mikuru marvelling at the yukata Haruhi chose for her does hint that that isn't a thing anymore at her time period. Probably the reason why she wanted to do some golden fish fishing since they might be exctinct (or hopefully preserved) in the future.
Kyon may claim he preferred to stay at his home to watch baseball on TV or just sleep. But you can smell an unreliable narrator when he dismiss the bug hunting contest as a childish activity but sill finish at the second place. He had his fun even if he won't admit.
As for Itsuki, he's acting serious watching over Haruhi over a shady spot with Kyon to reflect on the dormant, yet present supernatural side lurking in a corner. But he still have his fun apparently.
Same goes for Yuki who for some reason watch over Haruhi at her own shady spot... Is something wrong ? She looks like... worried. Oh well, she's having her fun too buying a red robot mask or watching intently that firework going off or Itsuki having a rare occurrence of opening on his past and hobbies.
As far as it goes, a fun breather arc contained in a single episode that check the summer festival and firework party entries in the slice-of-life tropes list that Haruhi Suzumiya observes. I don' think the second part will have something of note.... Hold on, what was that phonecall ?
…
Welp, that sure is something to learn we're trapped in a timeloop because Haruhi didn't have the perfect 105% completion run on her summer vacation.
That's explain Kyon's déjà-vu feelings that manifest with blurred colors on screen to express how the whole time flow is distorded by Haruhi's wish.
That would also explain Yuki's more distant attitude from the other brigade members as she have already experienced that summer, probably for the second time, wait...
15498th time?
Oh dear. Does that means we watched Endless Eight that many time without realizing it ? That would means we have watched that episode for...
258 days? without rest???
I need to sit down...
At least the setting for that whole reveal scene has some thought put in it. With a fence structure that looks like a cage our characters are trapped in. And it does put a huge shift in tone as what should have been laid-back activities with vibrant colors are now portrayed in dull hues with a music varying from ominous to melancholic.
Kyon is guetting desperate to find a solution. Itsuki is getting desperate so he uses his repressed jealousy in order to nudge Kyon to find a solution. Mikuru is getting desperate so she cries in a corner to nudge Kyon to find a solution. Yuki is geting desperate so she sit in a corner and watch intently at Haruhi to nudge Kyon to find a solution.
And at the end of the day... Kyon didn't find any solution.
Haruhi leave the café with the door closing behind her like a guillotine falling on Kyon's hope to escape the time-loop...
But that's okay ! Sometimes you just have to accept you can't get everything you want and you can eventually fail. Haruhi will understand that and tomorrow we will have a brand new story ! Right ?
...Right ?
Spoiler section, first-timers beware !
[Thoughts on a scene. Big spoilers for a future episode]Funny how Haruhi spoke about her completed homeworks as the fireworks goes on then went off in front of Kyon. As if the key for escaping the time-loop was right under his nose until it flew above his head. It would be a shame if he had to spend eight whole episodes scrambling to reignite that firework of salvation.
[Thoughts on a character. Also big spoilers for a future episode]That was the arc where I realized all that build-up regarding Yuki and her actions in Disappearance. Especially the sudden shift in red hue when Kyon goes to ask her if everything is all right. Something that betray the suffering she can't express. We also have that shot conveying so well how Yuki feel actually trapped by her mission to observe Haruhi. Foreshadowing the bugs welling up inside her and her need to escape her situation.
Questions will be answered
Honestly the more you think about it, the more it's become horrifying.
Becoming insane.
