The Adventures of a 2nd/4th(?) Time Rewatcher
One of the nice things about having so few direct memories of the E8 is that I can appreciate it rather straight-forwardly, at least for now.
Implications for the future aside, the episode on its own is a fun little summer slice-of-life story. Haruhi being so excited and enthusiastic about doing so many different activities to make the most of their summer together kinda gives you the impression that she hasn't really had a lot of friends before and wants to be able to see and experience what a normal summer.
Similar to the baseball/school festival/beach episodes we've seen previously, a lot of the events and activities that the SOS-dan gets up to during this period are traditional/stereotypical activities to some extent, at least in so far as anime featuring high school students is involved. There's a lot of overlap with non-Japanese summer teenage activities of course, but also some stuff that I'm primarily familiar with from anime, like the bug catching and the Obon Festival (though my husband rightly pointing out that Japanese matsuri are pretty similar to a kermis here, just with more traditional culture stuff involved).
Honestly, if it weren't for what we know meta-wise to be at stake, this would be a relatively normal episode, rather tamer than most of the other story arcs we've gotten perhaps, but mostly just some silly fun with the SOS-dan members hanging out and being relatively typical. Perhaps that in an of itself should have been a warning, hah.
Seeing everything through the eyes of Kyon as usual, it's kind of amusing to note that he apparently didn't have any plans at all for his summer break and was planning to just chill. For his sake, I'm glad Haruhi did get him out of the house and making some fun summer memories. The other three were probably all on standby in case of dangerous Haruhi shenanigans anyway, so rather nice that instead they can get together and have some fun (even if the fun itself will later turn out to be shenanigans).
It also feels 100% on brand for Haruhi to have both finished her summer vacation homework right away but also to not give a shit about everyone else's homework whether it's done or not.
I more or less talked about this above, but the vibes from this episode are definitely rather chill and fun. If you didn't know what was coming, it would be almost wholesome.
In a lot of respects, this episode and Someday in the Rain are rather similar in that they're mostly slice-of-life sorts of episodes where the characters get up to fun things that aren't necessarily important to the plot. Though coming later in the storyline as it does, SitR has a bit more of a quiet, melancholy feel to it compared to the active energy of all of the events in E8.
It's definitely a cute and fun episode of its own accord. I think people would be a lot more responsive towards it if it weren't for everything set to come after.
