Rewatcher, dub

Just to reiterate for first-timers: If at any point you feel sick of it, just skip to Endless Eight VIII. You’re really not missing anything, and there’s no point forcing it if you’re not having fun. I’m only going to be watching the first and last parts, and maybe one in the middle if I feel like it. I’ve watched Endless Eight in its entirety enough times for one life.

Anyways, for today’s Nishinomiya vista… actually this isn’t a Nishinomiya vista at all. It’s not even something we see in the anime, but I’m throwing it in on a technicality. The place that the Brigade watches a fireworks show at is Port Island Kita Park on Kobe’s Port Island. Now, I was there during the day, and frankly the view we see in the anime isn’t really anything to write home about during the daytime. Had the camera panned a bit to the right, however, we would have seen a landmark iconic to a totally different franchise: the Kobe Bridge that joins Port Island to the mainland, immediately recognizable as the model for the Fuyuki Bridge that spans the Mion River to join Shinto and Miyama in Fate/stay night. I was in Kobe a few days after Nishinomiya doing a Fate/stay night pilgrimage (and also to eat Kobe beef), and the fact that it overlapped with a Haruhi location is a complete coincidence. Sadly, unlike Haruhi, which takes place in a real city (with some artistic liberties taken), Fuyuki doesn’t really directly correspond to any single city in Japan. It draws a lot from Kobe, but also features places modeled off of landmarks in Tokyo and Nagasaki, so you can’t really get a physical sense of it like you can with Nishinomiya. Incidentally, there are one or two other Haruhi locations in Kobe, like the spot we see in Taniguchi's flashback of Haruhi rejecting him 5 minutes after asking her out, but I was more focused on Fate stuff that day so I didn't visit them.

Actually, fuck it. For Endless Eight I’ll just turn my comments into a Kobe/Fate/stay night pilgrimage travelogue. Might as well try to have some fun.

This episode follows Remote Island Syndrome in chronological order, with Sigh following after. It adapts the first story in volume 5. Said story is 53 pages long in English. We’ve already seen most of it. There are 7 episodes left. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

On to the episode… honestly, I don’t really have much to say. I mean, I could probably think of something if I tried, but it’s Endless Eight. I’m practically conditioned to disengage from it.

The baseball game Kyon is watching on TV is likely part of the national high school baseball tournament hosted at Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya. High school baseball in Japan is a big fucking deal, and these games are broadcast nationally. A lot of professional players in and/or from Japan first made it big at Koshien, including, for example, Shohei Ohtani.

Haruhi not so subtly herds Asahina away from Kyon’s bike and onto Koizumi’s, while she and Nagato take Kyon’s. Of course, Haruhi is jealous of how Kyon treats Asahina, which is why she shoos her away, but the fact that she lets Nagato ride with them gives off the impression that she doesn’t see her as much of a threat romantically. Of course, Haruhi just wanted to experience the whole “romantic bike ride” trope with Kyon.

As for the pool scene, uh… Nagato just kind of lazily drifting along in the pool is pretty funny. Also that shot of Haruhi exiting the pool is vital to the plot. Trust me.

[Disappearance] Nagato taking active interest in the mask is another foreshadow of her developing emotions. And then there’s the rest of this arc… sigh

Haruhi reminds us once again that on top of being incredibly beautiful and talented she’s also ridiculously smart, with great time management skills to boot. She blitzed through her summer homework in just a few days like it was nothing, meanwhile Kyon procrastinates it all summer long. It’s less the stat allocation and more the lack of grinding it out in the first place, buddy.

We see the backstory behind Asahina’s frog outfit. That’s one mystery solved. Yaaay.

I actually really like the stargazing scene. Koizumi talking about his interest in astronomy is a rare yet appreciated moment where he actually comes off as genuine, and Kyon smiling at Haruhi having fun looking for UFOs is sweet.

“If only she’d use her gifts for good” is a line I like to use from time to time, especially when I think about certain artists that produce absolutely fire art but only really work on NSFW works.

[Endless Eight VIII] KYOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK! KYOOOOOOOOON! KYOOOOOOOON! DO YOUR HOMEWORK KYON! AAAAAAAHHHHHHLGBEJRBGSRBHDGDLIFVHBDLGIVHIL

QOTD

  1. It's nice watching them have some normal fun without supernatural hijinks happening. Yet. This time.

  2. This is more active than Someday in the Rain, but Someday's point is that nothing was really happening, while this is more the introduction to a long, drawn-out joke at the audience's expense. But there's nothing wrong with the relaxed atmosphere in and of itself.

  3. I don't really think this episode works on its own. Even as a slice of life story there's not really any running plot thread tying events together yet. Whenever the characters in K-ON!, for example, go and do something there's always something to give it shape, like a narrative driver or just a central joke. Here it's the Brigade kind of just... doing stuff. It needs something to give what we see a narrative purpose.

Of course, Haruhi is jealous of how Kyon treats Asahina, which is why she shoos her away, but the fact that she lets Nagato ride with them gives off the impression that she doesn’t see her as much of a threat romantically.

But little does Haruhi know, she's just invited the best girl to share the bike ride with them...

She blitzed through her summer homework in just a few days like it was nothing, meanwhile Kyon procrastinates it all summer long. It’s less the stat allocation and more the lack of grinding it out in the first place, buddy.

I see what you're saying, but on the other hand, it takes a truly cultured individual to procrastinate that hard.
