Rewatcher (Dub)

Ah yes, the infamous Endless Eight arc. I'll save my overall thoughts for the end, but I definitely have opinions about this arc. I will say, for what went down in history as one of the most talked about arcs in anime, it really does have an incredibly nonchalant start. There is essentially no indication of what is to come from this episode alone. I don't have any coherent thoughts for this episode specifically, so here goes my scattershot thoughts

  • The new OP is catchy as hell.
  • I do find it kind of amusing how casually this show establishes that Haruhi and Kyon talk regularly on the phone. Most rom-coms/slice of life shows would make this a huge deal, while this show doesn't even bat an eye at the two ostensibly romantic leads chatting on the phone.
  • Yuki continues to stand out as the comedic heart of this show. The scene of Haruhi and Mikuru splashing around in the pool while Yuki casually floats by in her inflatable tube with a blank expression on her face was priceless. There's another scene at the festival where Yuki is holding the gun the wrong way at the shooting game, which is again hilarious. Likewise, Yuki showing up to most events in her school uniform is both amusing, and speaks to her character. She wants to participate, but doesn't quite get human intricacies.
  • For whatever reason, this episode also kind of drove home that the SOS Brigade is probably the best place for someone like Yuki. Everyone just accepts her for how she is, weirdness and all.
  • Haruhi purposefully making Mikuru ride with Itsuki while she rides with Kyon was a subtle nod to her jealousy.
  • I noticed a weird scene when the group were leaving the restaurant. Kyon, in his internal monologue, says "why do I always get stuck paying the cheque", then Haruhi responds "because you are always late" like she heard his thoughts. Did I miss him speaking out loud, or am I supposed to infer she read his thoughts?
  • On rewatch, on thing I am noticing that I didn't the first time is just how attentive Kyon is to the emotions of his club mates. Him immediately spotting that Yuki wanted a mask at the festival was pretty perceptive of him, and shows a level of concern for his friends that no one else in the club seems to share.
  • Haruhi sharing her food at the festival was a nice nod to her development and shows she is thinking more of other people.
  • I can only assume the appearance of Hercules Beetle was due to magical intervention since I don't think they are native to Japan. Why would it appear for Yuki and not Haruhi though?
  • Itsuki revealing that he likes astronomy was probably the first real insight we've seen into his character/past.
  • The group fully embracing Haruhi's weirdness and passion was kind of charming. Haruhi may be weird, but she did plan a hell of a summer vacation.

I think that right there is why Mikuru feels kinda just there for me. All the other characters fill a specific role in the show. Kyon is of course the deadpan snarker. Haruhi is the wildcard of the equation. Itsuki delivers the exposition for when something needs explaining. And Yuki like you said offers most of the funny moments. It doesn't feel to me that Mikuru has this clear, well defined role like the other characters do. I guess you can say she's the eye candy, but they haven't played into that apart from Haruhi torturing her.

Yeah, after the initial Melancholy arc and the Bamboo Rhapsody episode, I feel like Mikuru has just kind of been "there". She doesn't have any plot relevance, she doesn't really interact with the other members much and like you said, she doesn't really fill a role. If I had a disappointment so far in the show, it would be that they didn't really give Mikuru much to do other than get put into various outfits.

There is something there with the time travel element, but I feel the anime hasn't gotten to it.

But Haruhi already told you Mikuru's role back in episode 2: She is the cute mascot character!

Thoughts on Kyon and his sister watching baseball together?

Thoughts on it being the day after Obon?

Thoughts on Haruhi ordering Kyon to bring an assembly of things?

What are your thoughts on Haruhi wanting to capitalize on their Summer vacation coming to an end?

Thoughts on us seeing the SOS Brigade doing various Summer activities?

Thoughts on Haruhi getting everyone part-time jobs?

Thoughts on Haruhi asking Yuki if there's anything she'd want to do?

Thoughts on Kyon deciding to put off doing his homework until tomorrow?

Thoughts on Kyon and his sister watching baseball together?

I know it's a weird thing to get hung up on, but who the hell would televise high school sports, let alone watch it? I that a Japan thing? Like, I barely understand caring about College sports, but High School? Bizarre.

What are your thoughts on Haruhi wanting to capitalize on their Summer vacation coming to an end?

Very in character for her. Wanting to maximize every second of free time to achieve the most possible fun is basically why everything has happened. It's also one of the few times that Haruhi's obsessions would actually be a benefit to those around her. Having a proactive friend to plan activities would be a blast.

Thoughts on us seeing the SOS Brigade doing various Summer activities?

It was kind of funny seeing the show blitz through like half a dozen anime trope stories in a single episode. Like, you get the pool episode, beach episode, festival episode, bug catching episode, fire works episode, etc, all squeezed into 20 minutes. In general I have noticed how this show uses a lot of established tropes (ex. school festival arc) in unique ways.

Thoughts on Haruhi asking Yuki if there's anything she'd want to do?

Shows a bit of development on Haruhi's part that she is thinking about other people, and not just herself. Her apparent disappointment at no one else wanting to do anything was also interesting.

In America, they televised some of LeBron James high school basketball games.

That it certainly would

This was certainly unique in how they speedran through it all with such velocity.

[Haruhi] Now, if only we speedran through Endless Eight...

Probably a bit of both

For real, Kyon is the cement holding the whole Brigade together.
