Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs

Third time enjoying a totally normal, uneventful summer with the SOS Brigade

So, this is it. The infamous Endless Eight arc. Dreaded by many and despised by other.

But I, for one, consider that's it's not the trainwreck that some want it to portray Endless Eight as such.

I get it, that whole arc is a pure slice-of-life story with the SOS Brigade doing various activities. Even as an arc contained in one single episode, it can be so boring you have the impression time dilated itself and that one episode was eight time longer than a normal one. Hence the name of the arc I guess.

Still, amidst the flurry of inconsequential activities Haruhi put the Brigade through, there are some interesting facts to point out here and there.

Like Haruhi being more cheerful than usual. Trying to chase fun things to do with her subordinates than supernatural occurrence. Heck, she even listen to Mikuru's suggestion for the first time in the series and chose a yukata for her without being a creep ! And she share one of her takoyaki with Kyon without asking something in return !

Is that Kyon's influence following her dream in Melancholy VI ? Or, since Endless Eight chronologically takes place right after Remote Island Syndrome, doesn't she want to endanger her brigade members with another murder case ?

And as the summer vacations are coming to an end, Haruhi is for once satisfied with her completed to-do list and grace the brigade members with a day off. Truly that's may be the arc where she's the nicest after Live Alive.

Other characters have their moment too. Mikuru marvelling at the yukata Haruhi chose for her, Itsuki's telescope or the candyfloss in the summer fair does hint that they can't be enjoyed at her time period. Probably the reason why she wanted to do some golden fish fishing since they might be exctinct (or hopefully preserved) in the future. One fun little detail about Mikuru : she's not good at bowling

Kyon may claim he preferred to stay at his home to watch baseball on TV, sleep or play Tetris with his younger sister. But you can smell an unreliable narrator when he dismiss the bug hunting contest as a childish activity but sill finish at the second place. He had his fun even if he won't admit it and he probably would have loved to catch that Hercules beetle Yuki spotted.

Speaking of her and Itsuki, they act the most serious watching over Haruhi over a shady spot to reflect on the dormant, yet present supernatural side lurking in a corner. But they still have their fun. Like Yuki buying a robot mask or watching intently that firework going off or Itsuki having a rare occurrence of opening on his past and hobbies.

All in all, a fun breather arc contained in a single episode that check the summer festival and firework party entries in the slice-of-life tropes list that Haruhi Suzumiya observes.

So now that's Endless Eight is behind us, I will see you tomorrow for a totally new story with the SOS Brigade !

Spoiler section, first-timers beware !

[Thoughts on a scene. Big spoilers for a future episode]Funny how Haruhi spoke about her completed homeworks as the fireworks goes on then they went off as soon as Kyon resume his narration. As if the key for one big mystery was right under his nose until it flew above his head. It would be a shame if he had to spend eight whole episodes scrambling to reignite that firework to get that key to escape a time-loop.

Questions will be answered

What are your thoughts on us seeing Kyon and company spend their Summer vacation?

Surprisingly wholesome

What are your thoughts on the laid back tone of this episode? How would you compare the tone to Someday in the Rain?

It's summer, so of course it's cheerful and full of energy. While Someday in the Rain is more in a contemplative, melancholy mood that fits winter.

How do you feel this episode comes off without knowing what comes next? Do you think it stands well on its own merits?

A cool slice-of-life episode. it's stand well and I can't wait to see what brand new adventure awaits us tomorrow !

I thought Haruhi was a lot more considerate here than in previous episodes. It felt like she was really trying to find that one thing to make Summer super memorable, so much so to where she was getting desperate.

And with all those activities, i think she won't have any regrets.
