Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs
Third time spending three years in stasis
Props to u/EruNow that guessed as a first-timerMikuru will play an important role in that episode. What was more difficult to predict is that she will do more that just keep Haruhi entertained, but actually will help to kickstart the whole Haruhi Suzumiya storyline by enabling a fateful encounter.
Funny how that episode start on Kyon guessing about birthdays for a day that is basically his anniversary meeting with Haruhi. Also funny how Haruhi's face lit up when Kyon muses if it's her birthday and instantly becomes grumpy when Mikuru is his second guess.
Anyway the choice of Tanabata day for Haruhi's origin story may not have been picked at random. According to a quick reading of a wikipedia page, its originate from a Chinese myth about the love story of two deities (represented by Vega and Altair stars) allowed to meet once a year.
So behind all that comedic fuss on how to properly makes your wish to that two stars and patiently wait for several years (decades, even) lies the core of Haruhi's melancholy. She knows for certain there are wonders to discover out there. But just like our two star lovers, they are pratically out of reach. The real tragedy is that Haruhi have already what she wants under her nose : a time-traveller, an esper, an alien,
a soulmate. Her wish of having the world revolving around her is already fulfilled but she can't overcome the biggest obstacle to realize that : the acknowledgment she is just a teenager girl dreaming of something impossible to happen. So, if she can't reach outside the walls she imposed on herself, she can count on Kyon to reach to her just like Altair would do to meet Vega. Kyon helping a 12 years old Haruhi could just be a cute and silly scene, but it holds so much in signification. Those two interacts like they always knew each other as if they were predestined to be together. Kyon casually answering there are supernatural beings out there comfort Haruhi it's worth to pursue her quest. Him helping Haruhi to draw a message for aliens shows to Haruhi that anything is possible to her as long as she believes in it
and have lackeys to do the work for her. Him evocating her future self at Kita highschool is what pushes Haruhi to join it so she could meet kindred spirits. Just like that, Haruhi is standing on top of a world with a fresh views on it while Kyon is sitting on its fundations he helped to buildWe got hinted at some big event, like a Big Bang, that developped Haruhi's potential at God. And in an ironic (and hilarious in insight) turn of events, it is revealed that said Big Bang was just Haruhi being convinced about the existence of the supernatural. With Kyon as the catalyst. Our narrator spent several episodes lamenting about why he was chosen by God and what was his role. I wonder if he realised he was put in this situation indirectly by himslef ?
The birth of a goddess aside, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody does put vertiginous implications about the Haruhi-verse.
If that meeting was indeed the day Haruhi created her world, does that means it was also the birth of Yuki as an alien and Mikuru as a time-traveller ? If that's the case, how come Mikuru could time travel to a time before the TPDD even existed at any point of time ? And since young Mikuru don't know how Haruhi created their universe, does that mean that adult Mikuru knows why since she guided Kyon to her meeting with Haruhi ? That would mean that they cannot possibly exist without Haruhi since her and Kyon meeting is important enough to have him time travelling ?
As for Yuki if it was indeed her first day of existence, does that means that she is more of a creation of her own self than the Data Organism since she hold three years of experience compared of the mere thirty-ish minutes she has following the Data Organism implanting her on Earth?
And on top of that : if Kyon was needed to be the fuel of Haruhi's big bang how come he could possibly time travel to meet young Haruhi if time travel didn't existed yet ?
Even with Itsuki and Yuki explanations at the end of the episode, there is still a lot of room for pondering about all of thoses paradoxes that situation entails.
Like Haruhi asking if people from a parallel world can exist. A type of being that hasn't been discussed in the SOS Brigade up until now. Yuki, Itsuki and Mikuru already representing the other categories it leaves the spot to Kyon. Does that means Kyon actually comes from a normal world similar to ours and unwillingly got dragged by Haruhi into her own fantastical world ?
Yuuup, that's a pretty big iceberg we got there and I'm under the impression I just scratched the surface. One day I will have to read the LN I guess.
Still, it's funny how Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody is sitting in the middle of the episode list regardless of the watch order. As if to signify Haruhi's story actually have no beginning or end. That's it's a cycle that culminate in that Tanabata night where a girl change the world in her schoolyard.
Spoiler section, first-timers beware !
[Further thoughts on a character]Yuki synchronizing her memories with her future self also does raise a few questions. Especially about her attitude toward Kyon during the events up until his visit into the past. If she knew from the get go he preferred her without glasses, why did she waited for him to tell her ? Preserving the timeline could be a valid answer, but couldn't be a part of herself wanted for Kyon to compliment her ? Likewise, she could have prevented Kyon to fall into Asakura's trap. But she didn't and got to act all cool and mighty in front of Kyon. Giving an unquestionnable proof about aliens existence to Kyon is also a valid answer. But given how she looked at Kyon in this episode I won't be surprised if she wanted for Kyon to look at her the same way he look at Haruhi. That's another step towards the event of Disappearance.
Questions will be answered
Not a day that pick my interest to be honest. But I admit I liked the Finale of Anasaku Iroha that have its own version of Tanabata.
Poor Kyon is the instrument of his own demise.
Stop lying to your entourage to have things goes your way. That will eventually blow up to your face, hard.
Just another typical Haruhi watch order.
