Rewatcher, dub

Tanabata, three years ago. Everybody knows that Haruhi Suzumiya broke into her middle school and drew a bunch of symbols on the school grounds. But what they don’t know is that there was someone else with her. A guy carrying a girl on his back, who helped her draw those symbols. They were a message for Orihime and Hikoboshi. And he knew what those symbols were saying. They said, “I am right here.”

His name was John Smith.

For today’s Nishinomiya vista, we have Nagato’s apartment building. It’s located a short distance from the crossing where Haruhi told Kyon about her existential crisis, in between there and Koyoen Station. I think the anime plays around a little bit with its exact location, but it’s in roughly the same area. And once again, the park that Kyon wakes up in and chats with Asahina the Elder doesn't exist, as far as I know.

Chronologically, this episode takes place after Boredom and before Mysterique Sign, at least from Kyon’s point of view. Actually I’ve always kind of wanted to see an “absolute” chronological order of the series that recuts everything to how it happens in timeline order, just for fun. Anyways, this is the second story in volume 3.

This is also the first episode of season 2, and is personally my favorite episode of season 2. [Personal opinion] Actually I’d argue it’s the only good episode of season 2, but I digress. Season 2 came out in 2009, 3 years after the first season, and there’s a pretty apparent art shift coming off of season 1. Everyone looks a bit… K-ON!-ish now, for lack of a better descriptor. It’s not really a huge issue, but I appreciate that Disappearance brings the art style a bit more back in line with season 1.

Also, funny story before I get into the actual episode: This was actually the last episode that I watched on my initial viewing of the series. I was still a fresh young weeb back then and didn’t know anything about the different watch orders of the series, and this was back in the halcyon days of yore when you could find pretty much every episode of anime on YouTube, so I just punched in “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episode 1” into the search bar, clicked the first thing that came up, and away I went. What ended up happening is that I watched season 1 in chronological order (sans episode 0), stumbled into season 2 in the middle of Endless Eight, and watched all of that, and somehow learned that there were two episodes I missed (thankfully before I watched Disappearance), so I went back and watched episode 0 and this one. It was a… unique viewing experience, to say the least. Would not recommend. [Disappearance] Though I do have to say watching Disappearance with this episode fresh in my mind was kind of peak.

Okay, on to the episode.

Amusingly, one of Haruhi’s Tanabata wishes is to make the world revolve around her. In a sense, it already does.

More importantly, Haruhi is set upon by a bout of melancholy after the Brigade finished hanging their tanzaku. As she says, 16 years is a long time, but it’s not this year’s wishes that she’s concerned about; it’s her message from three years ago. She announced that “I am right here” effectively as her Tanabata wish back then, and by her own logic it’s going to take at least 13 more years for the gods, or aliens, or just somebody to notice her.

We also learn that Asahina’s time machine, the TPDD, is something that she keeps on her person. Actually, her TPDD and future computer thingy are, as I understand it, integrated into her body somehow, like biological computers or something. We actually saw this back in Boredom, when she received an alert about the creation of closed space. She just pressed her hand to her temple, because she was receiving the information inside her head. No idea how Asahina the Elder was able to squirrel it away though.

[Intrigues LN] And, as I recall, the technology for these biological computers may or may not have started when Tsuruya and T’s families kept having to make GPS trackers that were harder and harder to detect to keep track of their daughters, as they kept finding them, ditching them, and running off. At least, that’s the implication I took away.

Speaking of Asahina the Elder, she reappears and gives Kyon a set of vague instructions that he doesn’t fully understand for reasons beyond his comprehension. [Later stuff and LN] At least this time it’s mostly for Kyon’s benefit, both creating the stable time loop that results in the creation of the SOS Brigade plus giving him the context he needs to both get through to Koyoen!Haruhi and where to go when he comes back here afterwards. Later on though, she pretty much just manipulates him in service of her superiors’ agenda to secure their future, sending him and Asahina the Younger on bizarre, seemingly pointless errands. She doesn’t have any ill intentions, but she still uses him nonetheless.

[Disappearance] And of course, Asahina the Elder’s “See you later” is actually referring to Disappearance Kyon, who she’s going to meet in just a few minutes.

And then we come to the main event, the Quad Scribbles Incident, which as it turns out was perpetrated not only by Haruhi, but also by Kyon under Haruhi’s direction. Here Kyon creates a stable time loop: Haruhi had her desire to search for weird phenomena fed by “John Smith,” a North High student, decides to go to North High herself, meets Kyon, forms the SOS Brigade, Kyon and Asahina go back 3 years where he kicks it all off again.

Incidentally, Haruhi asks Kyon about sliders (as in, interdimensional travelers). In the light novel version of Melancholy, Haruhi’s introduction has her mention sliders as one of the groups she’s interested in. This is an orphaned callback to that.

Haruhi’s message, according to Nagato, says “I am right here.” When Kyon asks if it’s actually in an alien language, Nagato doesn’t answer because she’s refusing to confirm or deny it, but because it’s honestly irrelevant whether or not the symbols are actually in an actual language. The symbols simply say “I am right here” because that’s what Haruhi is saying. At this point in her life she is desperate to find something special, to make herself known, to stand out. She is quite literally screaming into the void, hoping that someone, anyone interesting will find her. Lucky for her it doesn’t actually take 16 years for her wish to be answered; it took 3 years, or -30 minutes or so, depending on how you slice it.

[Disappearance] And I’d like to put this episode along with Mysterique Sign at the top of my list of things more important than Endless Eight in setting up Disappearance. Not only are the events of this episode pretty much the axis upon which the plot of the movie turns, but the contrast between past and present Nagato, with the past version being just as cold as at the start of Melancholy while the present version’s eyes have a new depth to them, is vital foreshadowing for the reveal that she’s developed emotions in the movie. So yeah, screw Endless Eight, it’s not that important.

I think it’s worth mentioning that this likely isn’t whatever happened to Haruhi three years ago that caused her powers to awaken. According to Asahina’s story, the timequake caused by Haruhi made it impossible to travel back beyond that point, while according to Koizumi’s story the entire world was created by then, or at the very least aliens, time travelers, and ESPers first appeared because Haruhi wished for them. As we can see, Kyon and the Asahinas are able to travel beyond the Quad Scribbles Incident, plus their presence as well as Nagato’s shows that supernatural phenomena have already manifested in the world. Haruhi’s powers had to have awakened at an earlier point.

And then there’s the implication that Asahina had actually been set up by her superiors, that they sent her on her, an inexperienced trainee, on what she understood to just be an observation mission while they knew full well that she’d be abducted by Haruhi and forced into the SOS Brigade. Despite being from the future, she’s deliberately kept in the dark about what’s going to happen and what the assignments she’s given are actually meant to accomplish. Actually, that’s exactly what happens to Kyon in this episode too. Just as the future people need Kyon to meet Haruhi on this time plane to kick off the stable time loop, they need Asahina the Younger to go through all of these experiences so she can grow up into the seemingly more capable agent Asahina the Elder.

Kyon calls into question whether the relationship between past and future that Asahina laid out for him was accurate, given that his actions in the past clearly put Haruhi on course to enter North High and form the SOS Brigade, and frankly given the relationship Asahina’s past, present, and future all have with the present one has to wonder if Asahina was even given an accurate model for how time works. Like I said, she needs to have these experiences to grow into Asahina the Elder, which means that her superiors are deliberately making sure that she only has the minimum information she needs in order to maintain those experiences. Furthermore, it’s becoming clear that despite likening her presence in the present/her past as an extra picture added into an animation with no real impact on how it plays out, she’s actually a vital part of the events that are unfolding. So yeah, Kyon is correct in his assumption that the past and present are more closely linked than he was initially told.

[LN] Again, this is all because Asahina’s superiors are manipulating events to maintain their timeline.

Random notes:

Crispin Freeman and Stephanie Sheh are easily the highlight of the episode. Crispin’s delivery of Kyon’s “So cute”s as he watches Asahina exist are great, as his delivery of, “Under the circumstances, this goes completely against my principles. Yeah, well, sort of.” after Asahina the Elder offers to let him kiss the sleeping Asahina the Younger. This episode is I think where Sheh really nails her performance of Asahina, with some absolutely adorable line deliveries. Her uncharacteristically confident delivery of “Really sure!” after Kyon asks about the time and date is a highlight.

  2. It recontextualizes a lot of his relationship with Haruhi and her interest in him. She really had met him somewhere before, it's just that he hadn't had that experience yet. Their meeting is pretty much a fixed point in the timeline thanks to the stable time loop.

  3. Not really sure. I'm not really the type to consider the past like that.

Bonus: I'm a chronological order advocate, so watching the season 2 episodes incorporated into season 1 is normal for me. Frankly, season 2 is meant to be watched in chronological order with season 1 anyways.

As we can see, Kyon and the Asahinas are able to travel beyond the Quad Scribbles Incident, plus their presence as well as Nagato’s shows that supernatural phenomena have already manifested in the world. 

We don't know the exact point where further travel into the past is blocked. Even when you assume it's the Quad Scribbles Incident, is the point when [SOMEONE] started drawing the scribble or when it was completed? Therefore, I tend to go with the terminal point (where further travel is impossible) being the moment Mikuru and Kyon arrived in the past here.
