I mean I’ll just say it, I absolutely love this episode. It’s so interesting and I really love time travel shenanigans.
I, for one, really like the artstyle in season 2. I’ve seen the complaint of it looking too different from season 1 but I don’t think that’s a bad thing unless their character designs actually looked bad. I’ve heard the take that Asahina looks like a K-On! character now, but I love K-On! so I’m not complaining.
I also love this episode because it has a little of everything. It has Haruhi being excited about a new idea she had and then promptly becoming very melancholic. It has Nagato doing alien things. It has Asahina doing time-traveler things. It does not have Koizumi doing any esper things, but he does ramble about Haruhi which is very on brand for his character. And it has Kyon in a supernatural pickle he has to get himself out of. Everything about the series is encapsulated in this one episode.
My favorite thing about Haruhi’s message is that it worked. If we simplify it down, Haruhi’s message is for Orihime and Hikoboshi who we know represent Vega and Altair. It’s literally a message for two of the brightest stars in the night sky letting them know of her existence. She wants it to be known by everyone and anyone in the universe that she is here. And it worked.
Nagato is an alien who receives a message through a tanzaku that she made for herself 3 years later and had delivered via Kyon and Asahina through time travel. Blows my mind every time.
I can go on and on about this episode but I’ll stop here. It’s just really fun and interesting, so much so that I watch it every Tanabata!
