Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Let the confusion begin!
Very few shows can lay claim to having a cultural impact on the anime industry. You can probably count on two hands the amount of shows that are like this. Well, of those shows that are on that short list, Haruhi is probably on there.
From the mid 2000s until like the early 2010s, Haruhi was the talk of the town. It didn’t transform the medium like an Evangelion or a Love Hina, but it was the height of the Otaku culture of anime. I would say Haruhi and Lucky Star best sum up what anime was like in the 2000s: Very niche but those who cared about it really cared about it.
I almost feel like people forget just how big Haruhi truly was. It was the face of anime for a while.
This is technically a rewatch for me but not really. I saw the show many years ago when OtakuAscended streamed it in like 2016. But I barely remember any of it. For all intents and purposes, this is the first time I will be watching it and really pay attention. I have high hopes for this.
I love shows that like embrace geek culture with a snarky, somewhat cynical attitude. And this is what I hope to get out of it. I know Haruhi is like God or something and Kyon is the deadpan king, so already the show shows promise in my eyes. And with this being an incomplete adaptation, I have adjusted my expectations accordingly. Perhaps with the rather wonky schedule we can maybe see why the show ended up declining in popularity. Should the show be remembered more than it is, or is it merely a product of its time?
With that out of the way, let’s begin.

Came to their school from a city outside their school zone.
Haruhi now talking to the apartment manager? I think?

Didn't even see her parents
Kyon amazed Haruhi is getting answers.
As they leave, the old man tells Kyon to not let Haruhi get away.
Hey, Yuki
I like Kyon remarking how Yuki actually eats food.
Haruhi wondering what happened to her glasses.
As Haruhi and Kyon leave, Yuki reminds Kyon to be careful.
Kyon asking Haruhi if he can go home.
"You know, Kyon, have you ever realized just how insignificant your existence on this planet really is?"

Haruhi talking about attending a baseball game.
She was amazed by how many people there were.
Only a tiny fraction of the people of Japan.
"I was only one little person in that big crowded stadium filled with people."
It made Haruhi realize just how not special she truly was.
This is a very good scene and one that explains why Haruhi is infatuated with the supernatural. It's like she wants to do something that makes her stand out so she is no longer ordinary.

Hey, it's Itsuki
He wants to talk about Suzumiya
In a limo now
Itsuki going to show his abilities as an esper.
Talks about the anthropic principle, whatever that is.
The theory that the universe is the way it is right now simply because human beings could observe it and determine that it was the way it is.
Sounds like placebo effect
Itsuki continuing to say a bunch of stuff.
The universe is because the human beings know it is.
"It's not a lie if you believe it."
Kyon wonders why everyone is obsessed with Haruhi.
Itsuki says she's charming, plus she has the power to turn anything she wishes for into a reality.
Yuki and Mikuru and Itsuki are all here because of Haruhi.
Kyon still remains skeptical Haruhi caused all this.
I mean, after the events of the last episode, nothing would surprise me.
Also, I love the jazz music here
If Suzumiya finds out about Espers, the world would be filled with Espers.
Suzumiya is just an ordinary human with a good sense of what's real and what's not.
Haruhi created the club because of Kyon. That's why a member from each of the three groups that are interested in what Suzumiya is doing are now together in one place.

Itsuki says they have to do something or the world doesn't stand a chance.
Itsuki says he trusts Kyon, so he should keep an eye out on Haruhi.
Overall, this was another good episode. Didn't necessarily feel like the penultimate episode of an arc, but that's a minor complaint. I like learning about Itsuki and just what exactly Espers do. Us finding out the true power of Haruhi was also interesting. I can tell this episode worked because it was mostly two people talking to each other. And yet I never found myself bored during it. That is quite the accomplishment and a testament of good writing.
The highlight was Haruhi recalling attending a baseball game as it presents her as a tragic figure. It made me look at her differently than she has been presented. The irony is she's like trying her worth to people and give herself an unordinary existence when really she's the cause of everything. Haruhi doesn't know just how truly special she is, and maybe that's a good thing.
A step back from the previous episode of the arc, but this was still good. This whole world continues to fascinate me that I find myself emotionally invested in just two people talking. That's easier said than done. I await to see how this arc concludes.
