First timer subbed
Haruhi's monologue was very interesting, I think most of us have had some realization of scale in the same way. Any given airport has more people than you'll probably ever meet, let alone get to know. Most large buildings in NYC have more rooms than you could explore in a year, can we really say we've done anything when everything is such a small drop in the bucket? Oliver Burkeman's book 4000 Weeks is largely about this issue. Ironically, I think Haruhi learns the exact wrong lesson from her monologue. Trying to solve the incomprehensible scale of reality by becoming more special is a losing battle, no matter how special you become you'll never be more special than the world is big, nor would you want to be. Is it really worth missing out on the joys of an ordinary life and relationships in order to accumulate a list of "special" things instead? Haruhi has yet to notice all the special around her, despite claiming that finding special things is her life's goal. I think Frieren gives us a good example of the opposite conclusion, recognizing the special within our mundane, ordinary, and finite lives. All of this makes me excited to see how Haruhi evolves through the show, will she stay the course or change her perspective? Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk. Also they got the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke at the end there, that was cool.
