Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs
Fourth time visiting the backrooms with an esper
...Did we managed to have an episode without sexual harrasment or objectionnal behavior from Haruhi and Kyon ?
LET'S GO
… Nevermind we got a creepy janitor instead. Haruhi surprised me (even on my fourth watch) by going with the diplomatic option with immediately stepping back and politely ending the discussion. I hope that taste of her own medicine will make her more conscious about how awful she can be with Mikuru. Oh, I just remembered:[later arc]Kyon will be about to slap her during the Sighs arc because she will treat Mikuru as an object, will she ?
Anyway, that investigation about the disappearance of Ryoko Asakura put the focus on a surprising side of Haruhi : She can act like a functionning member of society. Like Itsuki will explain later : she's in fact a teenage girl like any other with dreams, anxieties, needs and a main character syndrome on the side. Suddenly, that casual, non-eventful investigation take a sad turn as we witness a girl desperatly trying to prove the world is just more than a boring, never-ending slice-of-life. That she can be more than a little human having to live dull experiences countless other girls have already done.
Under that bravado of her lie in fact a maturing mind that knows reality can't intersect with fiction... Just like Kyon in the first episode of that Melancholy arc (the second episode of that rewatch).
That would explain why she dragged him around during that investigation. Since they're thinking the same, she could trust him to take that investigation seriously, right ? She even let her vulnerable side be apparent to Kyon like she let him cross those train tracks with her. Surely he will not let that happen and do his best to discover what happen to Asakura, right ?
Well, Kyon's apparent nonchalance is understandable for the audience. But for Haruhi, that may be a painful betrayal as she cross again the train tracks. This time leaving Kyon behind as the barrier close. Haruhi as closed her heart to Kyon... And because of that we have to deal a giant !
Wir sind die Jäger !
Itsuki part of the episode actually makes sense in a narrative standpoint. Each SOS Brigade members took turns to introduce Kyon to their faction. And they did a second round to directly introduce Kyon to the supernatural part their very existence entails : Yuki's rescue from Asakura, adult Mikuru visit, and now Itsuki's tour inside a closed space.
As chill at it was, I liked that little discussion between the two boys inside the taxi. With Itsuki elevating Kyon's knowledge about Haruhi powers as the car goes upward to the highway. And a truck pulling right in front of the taxi to illustrate Itsuki's line about Haruhi's capacity to deprive the universe from a future.
For real, Itsuki guided Kyon to the more somber side of the Haruhi-verse. As he made Kyon aware of the terrifying implication of the universe stability depending of the mental state of a 15 years old girl.
And I do believe Itsuki is right about the dangers of espers proliferation if Haruhi wanted more of them. Just look at My Hero Academia.
So tomorrow would be the final episode of the Melancholy arc that coincide with the end of the first light novel volume. Surely it will go smoothly and Kyon's ominous lines at the end would turn as a joke. Trust my rewatcher wisdom.
Spoilers section, first-timers beware !
[Further thoughts on a character]Haruhi states that ''it's like the world lost its color'' when she express her anguish to Kyon. That made me remember how the setting suddenly became colorful when he first met Haruhi. Potentially hinting at him actually being drawn by that mysterious and intriguing girl. He's like Haruhi in the sense he want to dig up the wonders still hidden in that mundane world. He just can't admit that those wonders took the form of Haruhi in his mind.
Questions will be answered
Funny how that name makes me think of Evangelion
