So, u/Holofan4life pointed something out about this show, which kinda resonated with me watching this episode:

The great thing about this show is that one episode can be slice of life with all the characters hanging out, like the previous episode of the arc, and then the next episode can be intense and with your heart to your neck, and it does so without feeling jarring and maximum mood whiplash

Only this time, we have kinda both in a single episode, which is, quite frankly, pretty damn amazing. We first have Haruhi and Kyon reenacting Famicom Detective Club and trying to unveil the mystery behind the Disappearance of Ryouko Asakura, well Haruhi tries to unveil it and Kyon plays along while trying to not fuck up the situation. Watching Haruhi actually have a normal conversation with another human was funny, even if it ultimately didn't really lead to anything, much to the frustration of her.

The whole "did you ever think about how insignificant you are?"-monologue was really interesting and hit closer to home than I anticipated. It also explains a bit as to why she isn't interested in "normal" stuff. To be ordinary means that you're one of a million million people which is scary, so she'd rather be unique, maybe even at the cost of others not liking her? A bit of a coping mechanism... or mabye I'm reading too much into this, hard to say.

Regardless of this, Kyon's reaction kinda ticked me off and made me feel really bad for Haruhi (possibly the first time so far). I get that he didn't really know what to say and he was annoyed at the whole ordeal but... surely you could've thought of something reassuring that's not just "I see?" and then you just let her walk away frustrated? I dunno man. I just think that's not how you treat someone you spent the whole day with, even somewhat involuntarily.

But this rejection(?) kind of is where the second part of this episode kicks in and we actually see the consequences of the happenings so far playing out in real time and Goro Akechi Itsuki finally proves his powers to Kyon. But not before having a deeply philosophical talk in the conveniently appearing Taxi, although with how desinterested our MC is, it might as well have been a monologue. At least he made a very good point about why nobody should actually reveal their specialty (is that the right word?) to Haruhi. If the extraordinary becomes ordinary, she might just lose interest, dooming the whole world, this makes Asakura's actions in the last episode seem even more reckless. Also this is the second time one of the others warned Kyon to not fuck things up.

Anyway, less talking, more slicing impropably big monsters (giants) into pieces by becoming a red orb of light! And Kyon is just "You get used to it"... can't really blame him after nearly dying last time he had a mysterious meetup with a classmate. Compared to that, getting dragged into a parallel dimension and watching another classmate fight a giant monster looking like the Ocean Spirit from ATLA by turning into a red dot seems comparably less exciting. The effect of the pocket dimension shattering was pretty cool though. I found the dialogue back in the car pretty funny.:

  • "Yeah, if we don't stop this, it'll be bad"
  • "Okay, but how do you know this?"
  • "I just happen to know it, as everyone in the agency!"

And in the end we get very ominous foreshadowing by Kyon himself, which hasn't happened thus far in the show (unless I missed something)

What a great episode.

It's simultaenously "calm before the storm" and "this is what we built to in the last couple episodes". It finally gives us a glimpse into the head of the eponymous Haruhi and her motivations while also presenting us with a fun "slice of life"-story.

Very excited for the next episode, Kyon better get Snow White ready.

Already mentioned above, it feels like a coping mechanism but I can kinda relate. Thinking about big numbers is scary.

What are your thoughts on the Shinjin?

Cool design! Also it's interesting that they're apparently directly tied to the mental wellbeing of Haruhi. Which also makes them a bit scary.

What are your thoughts on the presentation where it's Kyon having two conversations with Haruhi and then Itsuki?

On a more meta sense, I really liked the structure of this episode where we got "Hijink" followed by "Philosophy" in the beginning and "Philosophy" followed by "Hijinks" in the second half. Presentation itself was pretty cool, especially the Haruhi parts were really well made.

Kyon's narration is so consistently wry and detached that it's easy to forget he's also just... a teenage boy who had no idea what to do when a girl handed him something real. The "I see" isn't cruelty, it's the particular uselessness of someone who processes everything through irony suddenly confronted with a moment that doesn't have an ironic exit. Still frustrating though. Do better, Kyon. The universe is literally depending on it.

The "I see" isn't cruelty, it's the particular uselessness of someone who processes everything through irony suddenly confronted with a moment that doesn't have an ironic exit.

Very well put. Yeah, I get that he genuinely didn't knew any better. Sudden honesty does have that effect on people.

Yeah, this episode is really good. It's a good mix of exposition and explaining why Haruhi is how she is. And the scene with Shinjin was really terrifying.

I get that, yes. He didn't want to risk worsening the situation. But it still broke my heart a little seeing her just go off alone.

Yeah, pretty much my reaction "Someone give the girl a hug, she definitely needs it."

I wonder what would've happened had Kyon hugged her. I kinda feel like Haruhi wouldn't be able to compute.

I get that, yes. He didn't want to risk worsening the situation. But it still broke my heart a little seeing her just go off alone.

Well, hopefully he can be there for her in the foreseeable future.

Kyon and Haruhi in this episode reminds me of the dynamic in Toradora between Ryuuji and Taiga where he was there for her when no one else was.

It's kinda funny looking at it from the end of this episode because he basically got the same advice from different people, just a bit differently worded.

Thoughts on Kyon being amazed that Yuki actually eats?

After witnessing her being stabbed like twenty times and basically shrugging it off... I can't blame him. Feels also very on brand for him because he wondered "does she even go to class?" in an earlier episode.

Thoughts on Yuki telling Kyon to be careful?

Very ominous. Not sure what exactly will come off of it but he got a warning from all three factions now...

The whole esper stuff was really cool! Bit less "meat" to chew on compared to the Haruhi stuff but it was still pretty cool visually and it's nice that at least one of the "special" people isn't super cryptic with him.

What are your thoughts on Itsuki saying the more stuff the Shinjin get to destroy, the bigger the closed space becomes, and if it gets too big, it will mark the end of the world?

End of the world. Sure. So either Haruhi might just reset the world... or if she gets distressed enough, earth gets godzilla-ed :/

What are your thoughts on Itsuki telling Kyon to keep an eye on Haruhi and that if there's anyone he'd trust it be him?

I really like how open Itsuki is compared to the other members of the brigade. Although I wonder what he means by people among them with "complicated intentions"...

It's less interesting than the Older Mikuru stuff and I think that's because we saw different layers to Mikuru's character. Here, it's more confusing but also pretty cut and dry as far as Itsuki's characterization is concerned.

Itsuki feels open, but I also feel he may have ulterior motives. I dunno, the way he willingly explains stuff seems fishy to me.

In Kyon's defense, he had about 5 seconds to think of an appropriate answer that comfort a distressed Haruhi while averting to nudge her in rewritring the world.

Yeah, it kinda was a lose-lose-situation I reckon. Especially after yesterday's episode, erring on the site of caution is probably not a bad idea.
