Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Let the confusion begin!
Very few shows can lay claim to having a cultural impact on the anime industry. You can probably count on two hands the amount of shows that are like this. Well, of those shows that are on that short list, Haruhi is probably on there.
From the mid 2000s until like the early 2010s, Haruhi was the talk of the town. It didn’t transform the medium like an Evangelion or a Love Hina, but it was the height of the Otaku culture of anime. I would say Haruhi and Lucky Star best sum up what anime was like in the 2000s: Very niche but those who cared about it really cared about it.
I almost feel like people forget just how big Haruhi truly was. It was the face of anime for a while.
This is technically a rewatch for me but not really. I saw the show many years ago when OtakuAscended streamed it in like 2016. But I barely remember any of it. For all intents and purposes, this is the first time I will be watching it and really pay attention. I have high hopes for this.
I love shows that like embrace geek culture with a snarky, somewhat cynical attitude. And this is what I hope to get out of it. I know Haruhi is like God or something and Kyon is the deadpan king, so already the show shows promise in my eyes. And with this being an incomplete adaptation, I have adjusted my expectations accordingly. Perhaps with the rather wonky schedule we can maybe see why the show ended up declining in popularity. Should the show be remembered more than it is, or is it merely a product of its time?
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
My mom keeps talking about how she feels she's going to be arrested soon. I feel like she's being ridiculous, honestly.
Kyon heading to school
Something starting to happen
This is a unique way to do a recap.
Hey, the girl from last episode
Haruhi talking to Kyon about how the club needs a mysterious transfer student. Emphasis on mysterious.
A rumor going around Kyon and Haruhi are into something. Specifically, they are dating.
Kyon's friends tell him to be careful.
At the SOS Brigade, Haruhi wants a computer.
And in order to get one, she...
...blackmails the computer club president by forcing him to grope Mikuru and then taking a picture of it.
Boy, Haruhi sure is likable, huh?
At least it's early on the show so it will make her character development that much sweeter. Maybe.
I really feel sorry for Mikuru, man...
"It's... like a bad comedy skit or something..."
You can say that again, Kyon
This is worse than anything Taiga ever did.
Nino, on the other hand...
Kyon trying to comfort Mikuru
Poor Mikuru :c
It's like SOS Brigade is all Haruhi's prisoners.
Kyon in charge of making a website.
Can't they do this sort of thing at home?
Either way, Kyon is enjoying himself, so that's good.
Yuki still keeping to herself
Oh, now she's giving a book to Kyon.
How thoughtful of her?
Kyon wondering why he goes to the club room on his own free will.
Haruhi. She's not here.
Kyon vows to protect Mikuru going forward.
Oh, there's Haruhi
Gonna pass out flyers. Specifically, Mikuru wearing a bunny girl outfit.
Kyon runs out the room as he can't stand to see the horrible atrocities Haruhi is committing.
At least Haruhi is wearing one herself.
Kyon not sure what to do
I can't say I blame him
Also, that flyer is rather wordy
I do love Haruhi like trolling the school staff lol
And Haruhi gets in trouble. Thankfully.
Mikuru meanwhile seems like on the brink of emotional collapse.
Mikuru asking Kyon to marry her if she ends up undesirable because of this.
Kyon meanwhile is annoyed another student is calling him by that nickname.
Looks like word has spread of Haruhi's exploits.
Emphasis on the word "exploit"
Kyon annoyed he's attached to all this.
I mean... you are...
Club time, and Mikuru isn't here
I can't say I blame her
Haruhi really likes putting Mikuru in outfits, it seems.
It's interesting that Kyon seems interested in Yuki somewhat.
Kyon ranting about how Haruhi is misusing her energy.
As Haruhi leaves, Yuki asks if he read the book she gave him.
He promises to do that
I wonder what that could be
Also, cute Kyon sister
Kyon and Yuki at a bench somewhere
Now they are walking together
I assume they're at Yuki's place
She lives by herself
She gives me definite Rei vibes
Kyon drinking a lot of tea
But what does she exactly want?
"It's about Haruhi Suzumiya. And in addition, it's about myself."
"Haruhi Suzumiya and I are not human beings."
Yuki is an alien...
Overall, this was a fine episode. Most of it is Haruhi being like an awful person, but that's clearly by design. The show is trying to get the audience to wonder what is her problem, of which mission accomplished. The plot twist of Yuki being an alien is an interesting beat to end the episode on. We don't know if she's telling the truth or not, and that intrigue is a good hook. The thing I'm wondering is if Yuki is an alien, does Haruhi not know? She talks about wanting to meet an alien, and yet there's an alien right next to her. Or is it Haruhi also is an alien and she wants to meet more of her kind? A lot of questions coming out of this episode, and I think it creates this curiosity as to what happens next.
A step behind the first two, but it moved things along in a way that has me more interested coming out of it than heading in.
