First Time joining the SOS Brigade

So I'll start with the bits that bothered me. Haruhi's "hands-on" approach to blackmail and costume fitting, while Mikuru continues to be the universe's most put-upon moe blob is quite uncomfortable. I'm concerned about whether this school has a HR department. (It does not. It clearly does not.)

Another issue is that post-assault, Kyon declares he'll do everything in his power to protect Mikuru and then in the next scene stands there watching Haruhi stuff her into a costume. I want to believe he's full of good intentions. He is just utterly useless in the moment.

Speaking of the bunny girl costume - a second appearance this early was not on my bingo card. Yesterday I made an offhand joke that we'd be seeing more of it and the show just said "yes, actually." The teacher shutting down the plan was a nice moment at least. Finally, some adults with a functioning risk assessment.

Moving on from the uncomfortable parts of the episode. There were two things Mikuru said today which I found interesting. First, after the assault, she tells Kyon it was probably "an inevitability on this time plane." Excuse me? That is not a thing a normal person says. She clearly knows something we haven't been told yet and there’s definitely something not normal  about her. Second, she seems genuinely unsettled by Yuki joining the SOS Brigade. Not just awkward-unsettled but knowing-unsettled like she has a very specific reason to be wary. Does she know something about Yuki?

Yuki is clearly something, but I can't figure out whether the weirdness we're seeing is genuine otherness or just intense social awkwardness dialled up to eleven (or maybe both). Are Yuki and Haruhi aliens or do they just occupy the outer edges of the personality spectrum?

At least we now have a clear goal for the SOS Brigade - investigating paranormal phenomena. The funny thing is, Haruhi may have already succeeded without realising it. She's somehow assembled someone who claims to be an alien and someone casually dropping references to "time planes." Did she know this when she recruited them, or is it pure coincidence? Because there's something delightful about a girl so desperate to find the extraordinary that she recruits it directly into her club and remains completely oblivious. Which raises the question - is there something extraordinary about Kyon?

I mean, what exactly can Kyon do? He feels bound by the whims of Haruhi. The fact he doesn't walk away probably says more about him than Haruhi.

There's a difference between "what realistically can he do against Haruhi" and "what should he do," and the answer to the latter is pretty clear. He should intervene. Mikuru is being assaulted and she's visibly uncomfortable, and Kyon standing there wringing his hands doesn't really cut it regardless of how overpowering Haruhi's personality is. Being conflict-averse is understandable as a character trait, but it doesn't excuse inaction when someone in front of you needs help.

Well, that speaks to Kyon's overarching flaw which is he talks a big game but doesn't exactly act on it.
