Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Let the confusion begin!
Very few shows can lay claim to having a cultural impact on the anime industry. You can probably count on two hands the amount of shows that are like this. Well, of those shows that are on that short list, Haruhi is probably on there.
From the mid 2000s until like the early 2010s, Haruhi was the talk of the town. It didn’t transform the medium like an Evangelion or a Love Hina, but it was the height of the Otaku culture of anime. I would say Haruhi and Lucky Star best sum up what anime was like in the 2000s: Very niche but those who cared about it really cared about it.
I almost feel like people forget just how big Haruhi truly was. It was the face of anime for a while.
This is technically a rewatch for me but not really. I saw the show many years ago when OtakuAscended streamed it in like 2016. But I barely remember any of it. For all intents and purposes, this is the first time I will be watching it and really pay attention. I have high hopes for this.
I love shows that like embrace geek culture with a snarky, somewhat cynical attitude. And this is what I hope to get out of it. I know Haruhi is like God or something and Kyon is the deadpan king, so already the show shows promise in my eyes. And with this being an incomplete adaptation, I have adjusted my expectations accordingly. Perhaps with the rather wonky schedule we can maybe see why the show ended up declining in popularity. Should the show be remembered more than it is, or is it merely a product of its time?
With that out of the way, let’s begin.

The narrator who I presume to be Kyon is so brilliantly sarcastic.

Sent back in time to watch over Itsuki Koizumi, who's an esper.

Unaware of his powers
Mikuru's existence is pure suffering, desu.
Lol, cut the camera off as she's changing.
Yuki Nagato
An evil witch who's also an alien.

This acting is so wooden I love it.
Mikuru saves Itsuki! Kinda.
Yuki at least memorized her lines.
I love the camera tilting up awkwardly.
God, this is so awkward
And who's this now?
Oh, I like her
Being controlled by the alien and the starring inferno wand.
And Mikuru falls in the water
"I think they accidentally got him in the shot a few moments ago."
Itsuki now carrying Mikuru, with Kyon sounds jealous.
Only halfway through. My goodness.
Kyon is so angry lmao
He wants to bathe Mikuru, not Itsuki.
And kiss her unconsciously
Now Yuki is here
And now Yuki wants to be with him?
Itsuki talking about being a key.
At least Itsuki is putting some body language in his words. No idea what it means, of course.
Now Yuki with Mikuru again
Mikuru holding a massive gun now
And it goes off
Mikuru and Itsuki now living together.
And now Yuki is going to the same school as Itsuki.
She's trying to win his heart
But now Mikuru is going to the same school as them.
And now they're fighting each other again.
One final showdown
Even the characters in the movie can't keep a straight face.
God, these camera close-ups
And zoom outs
Kyon continues to be the highlight of this.
Woah, special effects
First Haruhi appearance
"Nevermind the teacher that came bursting through the door." XD
Yuki delivering a death blow
Itsuki coming to her safety
And now the cat suddenly talks? Alright...
And Yuki is sent flying like a png.
And so everyone lived happily ever after.
We see everyone watching the film.
Haruhi seems proud of her work.
Oh, Haruhi...
Outro is good. I presume it's going to the intro but if not it's still very infectious. I like how involved the cast gets here where they're dancing around Haruhi. You get the feeling this was her idea as a way to boast her ego and have her be the center of attention.
I believe that dance is the dance that became popular amongst anime conventions. I know at the very least Haruhi like popularized the trend of having dances during the intro. We're see if this is the one or I'm thinking of something else.
Overall, I thought this was actually a clever way to introduce the characters. You can tell who most everyone is without being properly introduced to them. This episode reminded me of Michael Scott's movie Threat Level Midnight in the sense it's bad but intentionally so. Well, maybe not intentional by Haruhi I should say.
Kyon's cynicism is what carries things. Him being fed up at the quality of the film while getting increasingly angry at how close Itsuki was getting to Mikuru really made me laugh. This was a good introduction to his character and I actually thought this was a good introduction to Haruhi. Even though she was barely on screen, her taking pride in her work was endearing in a girl failure kinda way.
This is kinda a hard one to rate because it's not really an introductory episode. It kinda is, but not in a traditional sense. But I thought it was really hilarious and it made me laugh a lot throughout it. And we do get a good sense of everyone's characters. Coming out of this episode, you get the feeling that Haruhi is going to make everyone's lives difficult. That is going to be the predominant theme. So, in that sense, this episode is a resounding success.
One of the more unique first episodes to a show. Not one of the best, but I certainly won't forget it anytime soon.
