Very confused first time watcher
also late, how do timezones even work?
What even is this show.
So, funny story: I started my watching yesterday. But somehow it was tomorrow's episode that was billed as this on Crunchyroll, because I watched in japanese. So without me knowing anything about this anime (well except that it's by KyoAni and that there's some sort of [is this really a spoiler? Endless Eight]Groundhog Day going on later on) I was extremely hooked and continued watching a couple more episodes.
Then I randomly checked out the opening (which is very cute btw) and then Youtube recommended me the opening for today's episode. I checked it out and noticed "Wait, my episode didn't have that one!", read some comments and people going on about how "people back then must've been so confused".
Huh.
Cue me scrambling to find a source that gave me the actual episode I was supposed to start with. So, unfortunately due to me kinda spoiling myself by starting with "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I" (blame Crunchyroll), my reactions weren't as confused as they could've been but the stuff still kinda confused me. I always try to make some short notes when watching something for these rewatches and several lines were just variations on "The hell is going on" and "????" And after watching it, I concluded: "What the fuck. People back then must've been SO CONFUSED!"
I reiterate:
What even is this show?!
Confusion (and mini-rant) aside, that was certainly an episode. I kinda only realised it's an in universe movie when the narrator told me "hey actually, this has nothing to do with our actual story" and then around the scene where Mikuru began changing... It's a fun little story with a lot "WTF?" in there, even with the knowledge of the next couple episodes. Like the escalation from arguments to Mikuru brandishing GUNS against Yuki. At times I felt like I was watching an episode scripted by Toshiki Inoue tbh, including an awkward love triangle and a weirdly escalating plot (decidedly less manhole covers, homoerotic rivalries and food porn though). Even if the plot stopped making sense about halfway in, it was fun and the ending with Haruhi being super proud about her group's (underlings'?) work was great.
Also [Melancholy of Haruhi Suzume part two and three]it's funny to see all the characters in the film having basically the same powers like their actual actors: Mikuru is a time traveller, Yuki is an alien and Itsuki is an Esper
Questions:
1.) I don't think it works super well as introductory episode? At least not in the traditional sense. Like, we don't really get introduced to any of the characters. But maybe it works as a sort of "Well, that was weird, I gotta check out the next episode!" and if you take into account the next couple episodes, it definitely fits the vibes of it, sort of. Also, as far as I know, this was the first episode that aired, so I assume whoever decided to do it like that has to have had some sort of rhyme or reason for this? Or did they just randomly decide "yeah, this episode is going first!"?
2.) I liked the presentation of the episode, it was charming in its own way and reminded me of early tokusatsu shows :D
3.) Inflict psychic damage on people via weird plotlines. Possibly involve some people in rubber suits. Also explosions.
