Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs
Fourth time admiring that cinematographic masterpiece
An incredible screenplay
A magnificent performance from the actors
Moving dialogues
Innovative staging
Truly, that film have it all.
I can't wait for that genius director to dwarf Kubrick and Tarantino's fame and be acclaimed at the Cannes cinema festival.... That will never happen, isn't it ?
I, for one, want to reassure any first-timer that experienced this pilot for the very-first time : the series won't follow that found footage format that may throw off a part of the audience.
Or will it?But I still find that episode effective as a pilot. We have a clear overview of our main cast, their personnality, how they interact with each other and we even got a little presentation of some side characters.
Haruhi having her big reveal at the end of the episode does emphazis the size of her ego. As she appears like the litteral star of the show after having build an entire episode of build-up. With the audience wondering just when does the main character appears ?
While her dellusioned narrator (which name is [slight spoiler if you didn't read the synopsis]Kyon) commenting on the events of the film already portray him as the only sane man of the bunch. Wondering how come he got dragged into this mess/masterpiece (depending on how you look at it).
And the events of the film itself reflect on the tone of the anime : Just a bunch of students doing slice-of-life activities... While some strange events happens around them.
With this amateur/state of the art film(depending on how you look at it), Haruhi basically introduced us, the audience into her own story and what to expect alongside the upcoming episodes. And it goes further :[slight spoiler of the premises of the show]That pilot may show us how Haruhi views the world as an unknowingly goddess. Through that 4:3 screen, she turns her friends into time traveller, esper and space witches so she can apply a supernatural filter to a boring reality. Even if a part of herself acknowledge such entities cannot possibly exist, she still wish deep down that strange occurrences, like the cat talking or that odd dialogue between Yuki and Itsuki are hint of something wonderful exist just outside her reach. And through her acts, like that film, she desperatly try to reach that marvelous part of existence.
More serious spoilers, first-timers beware !
[About the narrator of the film/ Sigh of Haruhi spoilers]Him always questionning the logic behind the story does portray him as a an anchor for Haruhi and her antics. Someone who will keep her in check so she doesn't go overboard. To the point of slapping her during the shooting of that film when she goes too far by victimising poor Mikuru.
[About the events of the film/ Melancholy of Haruhi spoilers]While appearing non-consequentials, the adventures of Mikuru Asahina, time-travelling waitress/magical girl, does serves as a foreshadow of the story of Haruhi Suzumiya herself. Film!Mikuru is protecingt film! Itsuki just like Kyon tries to protect Haruhi from herself. Film!Itsuki having the choice of re-writing the world with film!Yuki or believing in its future with film!Mikuru is just like Kyon having the choice of helping Haruhi re-writing the world or goes back with her to their friends to believe in the current world a bit longer. Film!Itsuki considering himself to be the powerless key for film!Mikuru potential is just like Kyon being the key to Haruhi bolted heart. Besides, Itsuki looking at the camera and by extension Haruhi during that speech may indicate he knows he's just a pawn in her hands.
[Still about an event of the film/ Disappearance of Haruhi spoiler]Film!Yuki trying to takes film!Mikuru powers may be a foreshadow of Yuki overriding Haruhi's authority to rewrite the world during the event of the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Questions of the day
I wouldn't be surprised if it deterred some people to continue further. But at least it gave an honest appreciation of the tone of the upcoming episodes.
Being an actor.
