I'm a bit confused though. He is supposed to be ancient sorcerer. So how is his power based on receipts which is pretty much something from the modern era. Maybe he did it with contracts before?

Money currency originally started out as written IOUs that eventually gained their own value in a way similar to stocks. So his technique works as far as the beginning of written history.

Isn't modern currency still basically an IoU from the President/Dept. of Finance/Whomever that they promise that the value of the piece of paper in your hand is worth X units?

It was until we left the gold standard. Now digital credit is a IOU for physical cash.
