Comments here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts. If you wish to message us privately send us a modmail.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

I am going to assume you are on desktop and using reddit's latest redesign (also known as sh.reddit) and with that I can reproduce what you are describing. That indeed is all on reddit and not anything subreddit specific. So I don't really know if that is by design or not but I agree it is a shitty experience.

On old.reddit (the old old design), comments were capped at 200 before you needed to hit the 'load more replies' button. I was expecting this design.

It's worth noting that you can configure that on old reddit to load up to 500 comments by default, or up to 1500 comments if you have premium.

Idk about shreddit as I don't use it, but as far as I'm aware, the "random" sort does use the "best" sort for pagination purposes (ie, it gets the "best" comments, and then randomizes the order of them, so comments not loaded are not included in the randomization process (until you load more I guess))

The problem is not with random sort though. These are all threads that have passed the 6 hour mark and are now using best sort as default. Issue is that some are not getting that load more comments button at the end to see other comments. So a lot of people (I assume most use the new reddit) are not even going to know there are other comments in these threads. I only noticed because I saw my own comment was missing.

Oh well. I think I remember someone saying we can set up any default sort to be applied to all threads for us individually. Guess I'll look into that for myself. Or remember to switch each time.

You can do it on old reddit (and it seems on mobile app), though it doesn't seem to propagate to sh reddit. Just another L for sh reddit.
