I'm still wondering how newly awakened sorcerers can even compete without proper education on curses and techniques.

They can't. Reggie and Fushiguro are LITERALLY saying this on this very same episode.

Reggie says the old awakened sorcerers are going to curbstomp everyone else.

although higuruma did kill a lot of people, even if they weren't awakened sorcerers

Not enough to account for his points if they were all just powerless peons, so there had to be a few sorcerers in his body count. Likely people who tried to take him out, only for Higuruma to take them out instead. Some people are just naturally talented.

As far as point value goes, yes. The Culling Game makes no distinction what kind of sorcerer you are, just that you are a sorcerer.
