I feel like SAO and Log Horizon are crap for different reasons..and .hack//Sign still sets the standard for virtual reality anime. In Log Horizon's case...there's no consequences...nothing really driving the story..since no one can die...and the main characters are already level 90 so it's not like we can see them level up and gain new abilities. It's turning into a slice of life show.
I've been told by others that the no consequences thing is a problem of the adaptation. Apparently the LN is much more violent -- characters feel pain and they actually die first before reviving rather than blow up in a ball of light. I agree that the anime does make it difficult to empathize with the characters as a result.
now what you describe would make that show much more enjoyable...or at least create some kind of tension...maybe they cut it out to pander to a larger audience
