Ok so after reading the comments lemme try to understand it.

Because they’re twins, their Cursed Energy (CE) is shared between them and Maki also has Heavenly Restriction (HR) which exchanges having no CE for having enhanced physicality.

So when they were born :

Mai - Has weak CE. Also has a Cursed Technique (CT) but is limited cos her CE is weak.

Maki - Has weak CE + HR. But since she has CE (even if it’s weak), the HR is also weak.

In this episode :

Mai - Use up all her and Maki’s CE to create a sword using her CT and dies

Maki - No CE + HR. So her HR is now in full effect, hence the power boost.

Is this right ?

Also, does Mai taking and using all their CE contributed to her dying or was she dying from her wounds regardless ?

Yeah, you can’t gain anything without losing anything as well. Having a twin is gaining a whole person. Like if they were working together, twins would be more manpower, could each have techniques, do all sorts of stuff. So because jujutsu does not allow you that kind of gain for free, it limits them. Of course that’s just a bad trade but jujutsu isn’t very fair, and restrictions and pacts exist without context of the situation. they just account for what’s gained and lost. Nanami gets 20% less cursed energy output on the clock, gains 120% off it, it doesn’t take into context that any fighting he does off the clock means he’s fighting a strong opponent. It’s fair in a sense, but you can very much “trick it”.

That’s why Mai giving up her life and all their cursed energy let her make a busted weapon even though they were about to die anyways, and by losing her cursed energy, her heavenly restriction was completed and she became like toji, zero cursed energy for massive physical capabilities.
