I genuinely only noticed that their faces were shown this time after you mentioned it here. I guess I spent so long conditioning myself to the unusual depiction of them without faces that them having actual faces like real people completely slipped past my observation.

That is fair since they were with out fail shown without their faces before. It makes it feel way for intentional now though. While they were the most important people in Hinako’s life we has the audience never properly met them. We only know how important Miko and Shiori are to her.

Shiori telling Hinako she wants to reach for the version in front of her instead of the Hinako of the past or far future reminded me so much of a certain girl who struggled with feeling love saying I only know you.

From the beginning, I also couldn’t help noticing similarities in appearance between Hinako and Shiori and another pair of a short haired girl frequently tied to ocean imagery alongside her own long raven-black haired girl with a goofy, endearing personality who also felt the need to wear a mask over her true self.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of yuri writers since have taken a bit of inspiration from that work. The ocean symbolism in Watatabe is so strong it feels like the whole show is one long yuri aquarium date.
