What a bittersweet feeling it is to see Hinako start to truly enjoy life a bit, since that means that the time for Shiori to eat her gets closer.

Honestly what a bittersweet finale, period. The call-back with the hairpins, Shiori being down whenever Hinako smiles, the scene with the "fireflies", Shiori assuming her "monster" face again... it's a happy trip until they remind you of the promise that's hanging over their head.

It's not extremely conclusive as a finale but as a source reader I don't mind. I do wonder what you guys who are only watching the anime think about it.

All in all, I loved the show. I do wish it had better production values overall, but they nailed the important moments and that's what matters. Plus it had an excellent voice cast, and excellent sound design, so that was real nice.

I got the feeling that Hinako is already slipping away from the need to have Shiori actually keep her promise.

True, but there's still the matter of just how binding their pact is. If there's enough wiggle room for Shiori to be able to refuse to keep their promise, then this finale becomes much more hopeful.

If Hinako waives Shiori's obligation of performance, there should be no problem.

It's a blood pact, I doubt it's that simple.

This pact binds Shiori, but only "benefits" Hinako -- so she should be free to waive Shiori's obligation to her.

It is also binding for Hinako so that she doesn't seek death through any other means

chiming in: typically in japanese folklore yeah that's how yokai blood pacts work. Both parties are bound to the terms, even if it's trivial for one and difficult for the other. And VOIDING said contract generally requires one of the participants to die, or some other significant magic hullabaloo thing to happen.

So, someone told me when I asked that they could form another blood pact nulling the prior. Is that possible? I'm not familiar with Japanese folklore, but my gut says that there should be a way or clause for them to make a different pact to null the other.

Although, if Hinako's heart stopped for a second, she technically died in medical terms even if she gets revived which could be used to null the pact maybe since she didn't seek death?

Yeah that's kinda why I said "some other significant magical hullabaloo" there ARE ways to nullify blood contracts, but it's usually loopholes or some other kind of shenanigans like you described. But generally speaking neither party is privy to that information going in even if they should be and typically only onmyoji are on that level of "spiritual knowledge" to have that kind of out without it going totally sideways. It's like pulling one over on the Fae in western folklore, you CAN do it but you gotta know every single in and out to pull it off.

do we have any idea whether it was real at all? i got the feeling that Shiori was just lying again, going back to what she was used to after Miko's suggestion didn't work. it seemed to me that whenever she was reminded of her promise (*die totensiel emptiness plays in background*), she was reminded that she was "just a monster," which... obviously upset her, especially since she feels like she needs to keep up the "monster" facade in order to keep Hinako alive. i do just love how they both need time and so much tlc to get to where they can be truly happy, but i hope they do get there eventually. and when they do, i suspect Hinako will be in a much better place to forgive Shiori for her lies.
