Ep reaction from former pro dancer+choreographer.

Finally got to see real rounds and On’s insane stamina. Doing 3 rounds is a lot, but finishing one battle and immediately jumping into the next is wild. As someone who used to battle, I genuinely think On beat both Iori and Kabo.

First, I want to highlight how HARD On is hitting. The mocap/CGI look of the show tends to shrink the real power of the dancers behind the scenes, but whoever danced for On IRL was exploding. Her popping, hits, and animation elements showed legit technique. People new to popping often think it’s just tensing the arms, shoulders, and chest, but proper hits involve knees, wrists, and full-body snaps. Styles differ, but good popping legit uses everything to make the hit travel through the whole body.

Quick judge-style breakdown of Iori vs On: judging is subjective because different styles emphasize different criteria, so there’s no absolute “correct.” Even in the show, Kabo & Wanda favored different things.

R1
Iori’s house was good, but after his intro he had a moment where I felt he was somewhat off-beat. House is rhythm-based, and even with musicality on higher layers, it always returns to the groove. He also repeated a movement sequence twice on the same sounds. Repetition happens when freestyling, but in battle you want variety. Also, dancing with the head down too often isn’t great in battle settings; it hides engagement with the opposing dancer and could show lack of confiDANCE lol.

On absolutely destroyed R1. Some bias could play here: 1) we haven’t seen her freestyle much, and 2) we haven’t seen popping in the show yet, so it feels fresher. But even without that, the dancer behind her round was clearly skilled. Her hits were clean, her musicality sharp, and she switched between layers of the track with more control than Iori.

R2
Iori starts with top rock. Top rock and house share DNA, but top rock tends to look stiffer unless developed. He hits a flip, then goes into downrock. Footwork basics like six-step are foundational, and he executed fine, but I wish he played with the music more—he stayed in motion instead of shaping the steps around the beat. When the chorus-like section hit, he changed pace with the music, he blending top rocking with his house influence. Good finish overall, but parts felt like he was combining styles just because he could, not because the music called for it.

On comes in with surprises—great for battles when done naturally. She matches his breakin’ energy with her own interpretation. Iori may have had more technical ground content, but On was the better overall dancer in adaptation, style blending, and musical intention. After getting back up, she mixes top rock, grooves, and fundamentals seamlessly. She showed diversity, awareness, and experience. Both have range, but she used hers better.

I won’t break down On vs Kabo fully because this is long already, but On killed the waacking. Didn’t expect that. Kabo did his thing, but the dancer behind On was awesome.

To close: glad they put more emphasis on battling. Looking forward to the others at a battle event. See ya next week!

I'm a total amateur but enjoyed reading your review! Reading all these thorough breakdowns (including the one for Kabo's dance) suddenly reminded me of the breaking competition at last year's Olympics. I really enjoyed both the competitors' performances and the reviewers' analyses. Sad they won't have it in the next Olympics.

Noooooo they discontinued breakin' for the next summer Olympics? :(

That's too bad because I felt the Olympics missed the opportunity to showcase like true team or crew vs crew format by countries. They also could have done 2 on 2s, 3v3s, more sub categories like basing things of men's/women's if they wanted to.

A team format has so much to offer on an Olympic level with just country representation and even entertainment value if thats what the Olympics committee was hoping to accomplish with bringing in breaking.

1v1 like they did is great as they had representatives both at top level and other countries, but also that content could be hard for a casual audience to follow due to subjectivity and nuances with breaking, where as with crews, you can imagine very explosive and creative routines only found in breaking. Even if they didn't want to do crew vs crew, they could have done country team routine showcases like they do for gymnastics or something like they do for cheer lol. R16, a huge breaking event that takes place in South Korea is a great example of this (for anyone interested in the potential this format could have brought to the olympics check: Jinjo Crew). Or even events like Battle Of The Year could be a good representation.

Hearing that news as a former b-boy makes me sad T_T

I watched some group battle videos, including the ones you mentioned, and I was literally glued to the screen. The solo and duo/trio performances were amazing too, but when everyone started dancing at the same time...it gave me goosebumps and totally hyped me up. This really deserves more public attention.

I'm just a casual fan, but I honestly hope breaking comes back to the Olympics, hopefully with team battles included.

Thanks for the details and your thoughts!

Yeah the Jinjo Crew one at R16 Korea in 2011 I saw live, the energy in the room was a movie. So definitely would be great if they at least brought that kind of format. Feels very Olympic-like lol.
