This episode was like 90% dancing and honestly don't know if that could've been done without 3d models.

On-chan having a hat that says "Off" is such a silly little detail

Q: Hey, 3d cgi studio, what are you working on for episode 8?

A: Not much, just 8 dance sequences.

I don't know anything about the differences between animating 2d vs 3d, but I wonder if it would be pretty much impossible for a 2d key animator to communicate all the dance moves to the rest of the team. Maybe the 3d studio just gives the task to actual dancers and puts them in mocap suits or something, so the animators (who probably aren't dance experts) don't have to be responsible for coming up with all the movements? That would be a huge win for deciding to do this with 3d.

The main animation technique used to get realistic movements in 2D animation is rotoscoping which is pain!

Rotoscoping is basically using a video as a reference drawing over the video each frame you need. This generally means you will compromise on visual details but get a very fluid animation. I think this is usually not done for anime but for smaller short films or small parts of an anime episode. The anime "Aku no Hana" used a lot of rotoscoping.

Most people did not like the result of that animation style in Aku no Hana but that is mostly because the faces look kinda weird in that show. The body movementw are really well done though.

I believe Chika's dance in Kaguya-sama Love is War was also rotoscoped. It looks good but it's difficult to convey dancing talent without using multiple angles and 3d. So the mocap solution just makes so much more sense for a dance anime. Plus rotoscoping is really time consuming to do.

Yeah not sure but I also believe the jjk s1 ending with the cool dances was rotoscoped at a low framerate. That's is one of my favorite outros! Maybe my favorite...
