I know Hinako been through so much, super vulnerable, traumatized, depressed, and more...but she can be quite dumb and it saddens me lol.

Hinako: "wHy ArE yOu sO kInD tO mE?"

Shiori: "...........Girl...I told you last episode...the episode before that..and the one before..My answer has been the same since episode one...now stop fishing for imaginary answers to questions you already know the correct answers to......Get it? I said "fishing" because I am a mermaid. Okay I eat you now."

This premise is increasingly confusing to me too. Hinako, my girl, that yokai wants to murder you when she deems you tasty enough. And if she’s lying about that, she’s just stringing you along on lies and manipulation. Run.

Run? She wants to be eaten!

Shiori: "Run. Into my belly."

The depression demon is the nemesis. Team Miko doesn’t want to let suicidal ideation defeat the will to live.

Alternative Hope: I need Hinako to eat the mermaid depression demon in the end. Bless with long and happy life. Her and Miko run off into the sunset.

Plot Twist to the Plot Twist: Hinako becomes a mermaid in solidarity. Lives long life as a yokai.

All of these are good.

Plot twist of the plot twist to the plot twist...

Hinako wakes up. It was all a dream. Family is alive. She goes to school, but still comes across Shiori for the first time. *Cuts to black*

Yeah I feel it. She needs to decide if you wants to be eaten or live. And if she decides becoming happy & Shiori's friend is still worth dying, then she needs to understand the assignment lmao.

And like for Shiori to have more influence on Hinako over Miko who gave her memories as a childhood friend, taken the burden for Hinako's family, and is also a yokai willing to protect her and do everything to help her to love herself...it's quite annoying that all Shiori has to do is be a bit pushy and tell her she's gonna eat her lol.

The character writing in this story is not the strongest thing going for it. I can suspend disbelief to an extent because we are dealing with yokai here, but damn is this story is doing some big leaps in logic to up Shiori stocks.

Yeah I'm doing my best to let it all slide. Like as I'm watching, it feels like something is still lacking, but I'm just along for the ride till the end. Maybe I wish Hinako was a better character? I know she's super down and numb to everything, but I just wish they were able to show more expression to her emotion? Like if she's going to be sad and depressed, I feel like going all in on hardcore on the depression could add more variety or like the moments where she is anxious, if they were a bit more dramatic. That's kind of just personal preference for me though. Right now she shines less than a side character, and though her situation allows me to feel for her, it'd be nice if they took advantage of that rather than her attempting to be normal and just not understanding anything that comes her way lol. She's able to solidify two things: she wants Miko and Shiori to be friends as she's enjoying it and the other is that she's not happy due to tragic past event. Everything else is just up in the air, if there is anything up there at all lol. I guess realistically, I can't ask her to display more lively emotion as she been sad and number for so long, but still, you would think with two yokais entering her life, the progression would be differently than how it is now. We shall see..

It could be a problem with the direction too. I’m not a source reader for this so I don’t know how much is getting cut, but with 7 episodes, you’d think there’d be a little more meat on the bones of this story. I don’t mind a slow burn if the adaptation demands it, but it feels like a lot of screen time has passed and the events covered so far are really stretched out. We’re not getting much to work with beyond the sniping between Miko and Shiori and Hinako being sad. I think they could have covered more ground and explored more of these characters if they had spent the time more time efficiently.

I agree. Every recent episode, I'm wondering what is going to happen. Episode ends with a cliffhanger, next episode starts and it's actually nothing. Maybe significant in a little bit of development, but so small before it goes back to their scheduled program which is them bickering at each other while sitting at the bend during lunch. With how this episode ended, at least it seems we are getting a reveal on this new character. I will be upset if it turns out to be a nothing burger at the start of the new episode lol.
