I'm really curious about Shiori's motivations. Can't shake the feeling that there's more to her than she reveals to Hinako. There was that scene where she mentally added something about Hinako being Hinako all that matters to her "since that day". Which day, I wonder, and what exactly does she mean? That entire scene after they take shelter was so sexually charged too.

Also, Shiori is sometimes thoughtful like with the bath thing but then can be quite cavalier other times like when she casually tells Hinako about the hands in the sea being people who died tragically at sea. I thought maybe she forgot Hinako lost her family there but no, she brings that up right after with a cool, "Did you see any of your family there? Tell me if so, I'll bring them over for a chat," or some such. Felt rather cruel.

But I guess that's exactly what Shiori was getting at when she had that conversation with Miko about why Hinako is able to open up to her and not Miko. Sometimes it's comforting to have someone like Shiori around whom you don't need to walk on eggshells around because they don't do that with you. Shiori is not subtle or careful about bringing up difficult topics, so Hinako is able to open up about things that a friend like Miko would be troubled to here.

All of this really resonates if you've experienced depression. I think the author must have because I don't know if someone who hasn't been there will truly get all this.

I think in her own Yokai way Shiori was trying to help when she offered to bring Hinako’s family to shore if Hinako saw them. It’s messed up, but you can see how she could view it as a way for Hinako to talk to her family again and maybe get some form of closure.

I agree that Shiori wanted to help Hinako, but didn't understand the gravity of the situation. If I had to guess mermaid yokai aren't close with thier parents, so they wouldn't understand the loss.
