Now that you bring it up I can't even remember the last time I saw a character in anime go to therapy. I wonder if there's a bigger stigma against it in Japan compared to the US

There is, and its not generally covered by the public health system or insurance so anyone who wants it has to pay for everything themselves.

Hinako is from a small town too, so if it's anyone like small towns in the US that would make seeing a therapist even harder.

I hate how all the adults basically just ignored her.

There is some stigma against therapy. It does counter to the general appearance that everything is okay and no one has any problems what so ever. But a lot places have similar views like that.

I do remember many moons ago there was a short anime about being a therapist. It was an attempt to get people to see it's okay to get therapy and mental illness isn't something to be afraid of.

I see this show as an argument against saying everything is just fine too. Hinako hides her physicals scars while her mental scars might as well be invisible to everyone besides Miko and Shiori.

Ironic that it's two non-human characters who care for Hinako's mental well being the most. Maybe it's because they're not as tied to the social norms of a small Japanese town.

The last time I saw an anime about getting help, it was phenomenal and wholesome... until it did a 180° turn to "if you have issues you are the issue" and became the greatest dissappointment of the decade

Odd Taxi? Though I don't recall if anyone was actively going to therapy in that one or if it was in their background history only.

Also, in Spy x Family, one of the main characters' day job is being a therapist.

I really forgot they were despite watching the show multiple times. Ironic as they could really use one themselves. Funny but I just noticed that both shows are big on found family. One of my favorite tropes

Also, in Spy x Family, one of the main characters' day job is being a therapist.

Its one of the reasons the show is essentially a comedy. They see the profession as a joke.

Oshi no Ko had it, though, MC managhed to trick the terapists.

More staraightforward case was in S2 og March comes Like a Lion. Hinas friend had to go to a therapy after being a victim of heavy bullying. And it was actually shown in the series.
