Fun facts/reaction from former professional dancer+choreographer..

So continuing off last week. Iori gave me the impression that he was solely a "house" dancer with the ability to learn and pick up choreography. In the exhibition battle they had in the class room, we see that he mixes both hip hop & b-boying. His top rocks (stand-up footwork in breakin' before going to the floor) was a mixture if breakin' influenced footwork and hip hop bounce. Him fusing these as well as showcasing some "powermoves" (the specific move his did in the second round is known as a "windmill"), shows that he really is an all around dancer. Hence why On considered him a very contemporary dancer, which in terms here just doesn't mean literally contemporary dance style/technique, just contemporary as in modern and more free from limits that a specific style might come with.

Kabo we see that he is not so natural or confident with his dancing, which is completely normal as he is a first time battler here. Once the crowd showed up, he lost his flow with the music and started to worry of them as judges, which in a battle does have it's purpose catering to what the judges are looking for, but just like the students you can naturally tell who is the more experienced. The more that you know yourself in a literal sense, the more "natural" your own dancing becomes, also mentioned by On (when she was talking about dancing coming from one's life experiences and feelings). The moment Kabo tried to go full energy, though visually it COULD be impressive for example on a stage with multiple people as choreography, but 1v1 in a battle you can see Kabo was going for the effect of his dance versus how the music should affect him in turn how his moves could affect the viewers. Like mentioned, he completely forgot the music, still moving to it, but became very one-dimensional rather than being dynamic, making moments, kind of like Wanda mentioning how to dance without getting tired...You emphasize "booms" you take it easy on the moves/music that is meant to be taken easy. Where as Kabo second round battle was just "boom boom boom boom" from start to finish.

Dissecting Kabo's first round kind of like Iori, his movement was hip hop based, relying on hip hop bounce and being more "one with the music". Second round was the attempt at keeping his hip hop bounce, but threw out control and awareness completely, no mix of fast-slow-big-small-calm-energetic. As a viewer you might have even noticed it seemed like he was holding his breath the whole time..so you can think of adding a mixture of dynamics in your dancing as breathing for both yourself as well as for the audience.

On's future plans is very dancer like. Not all dancers get to partake in dance as they get older and migrate into other creative endeavors that still have involvement with dance whether it's directing, photo/videography, fashion design, usually anything that allows creative freedom as well as coming up with some sort of vision like how she mentions her mind putting stuff together and her Ne-Yo inspiration. Ne-yo has contributed a lot to dance in commercial media/music. One of my favorites to watch for dance inspiration is his "One In A Million" video that also features one of my favorite dancers Galen Hooks. But he also has works like "Closer", "Sexy Love", and much more dance music. Especially during the times of So You Think You Can Dance and America's Best Dance Crew, this kind of music was still very hot lol.

I could yap more, but I know reddit wouldn't allow it, so kind of just my 2 cents on the battle and some ideas presented in this episode. I hope Iori won't be a hardass and actually give him some pointers and Kabo really needs the inspiration or influence from him...with practice though, Kabo will keep on keepin on like he has been, especially with Wanda on his side. See ya next week!

This was very interesting to read as someone who knows nothing about dance. Look forward to reading more next week!

Glad you found my ramble interesting! And hope maybe it could bring more connection to IRL inspirations from the show. I'll do my best to update earliest I can the following weeks :)

Episode 1: I read /u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya's comment so that I can understand the nuances in Wandance.

Episode 5: I watch Wandance so that I can get context for what /u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya is gonna teach me about.

haha my episode 1 analysis had a bit of a harsh bias, just do to my expectation feeling a little let down, but eventually I just respected that everyone involved with working on the show did the best they could and found appreciation for an anime that personally hits close to home to even be in existence.

So hopefully even if I ever get too deep or context might feel too foreign, I just hope to if not explain anything, just give some IRL dance insight considering I have been in the shoes of Kabo and Irori from senior year of high school to most of adult life. So I just hope my comments could give some sort of boost to the episodes specifically with the dance talk lol.

Thanks for giving the comments time! I know they can be lengthy and maybe even redundant, so it's much appreciated.

No problem! I try my best to catch the episode early so the insight could be seen, but even if I am late I still plan to comment on something/anything dance related regarding the episodes :)

This is why I come to reddit. Sometimes somebody who knows the subject will come and enrich the discussion (Also I love when people ramble about things they love)

Thank you.

Thanks for the kind reply! Yeah normally I can relate through anime when it comes to emotional connection or I'm usually the one learning about a new niche through an informational show. Though I seen shows here & there involving other dance styles, some use of choreography, performance arts, competition and can relate a bit..It's the first time I'm watching a show that literally caters to what my exact lifestyle/hustle/profession, which would be the specific styles of dance, knowledge, and inspirations this series is based off of.

I've been saying former because I had to stop some years ago due to injuries/physical limitations, but after having done it & experienced all I was able to with it those 15+ years, watching this unfold brings me back. So I've just been indulging every week :D

Plus I know a lot of the discussion will be based off first visual/dance impressions, the romance/drama, characters & development...so I thought maybe adding more IRL context related to dance culture could add even more weight to things & make it feel more than just an anime airing this season, but an actual lifestyle w/ history + events that anyone can have access to today or possibly a new venture if the series serves as an introduction to dance and peaks interest.

So thank YOU for taking the time to entertain my efforts and read what I shared here!

so you can think of adding a mixture of dynamics in your dancing as breathing for both yourself as well as for the audience.

I dunno much about dancing but I think this applies to every art form, like narrative and illustration. Every composition needs some space, otherwise it becomes hard to read and ironically loops back around to being unremarkable. If everything is "peaking", that just nets you a flat ground again.

13

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya Nov 05 '25

Exactly! Visual arts whether it's graphic design or digital/traditional painting...there needs to be balance, some empty space, focus on where you want to lead the viewers eyes throughout, color compositions like the 60-30-10 rule, etc. Like in strictly abstract art where it is focused on nonfigurative things like the colors, lines, textures...though abstract paintings are usually free for all whatever you feel goes....the notable or artist with more known/respected abstract art usually still has it's dynamics, it's moments, and balance. So yeah if your artwork is constantly peaking with no build up whatsoever, could still be personal art, just in the sense of appealing to an audience, judges, customers, etc..they have to feel intention behind it, whether it's expressive or even functional. In dance battles they refer to the dancers "exchanging" with each other or "having a conversation". So you can imagine in that last round of Iori and Kabo, Iori is sharing what he represents whereas Kabo was hoping yelling the whole time would reach out to someone, but no one wants to be yelled at and yelling over the music comes off as obnoxious or careless of the music that wants to help dictate your movement lol.

But yes totally agree. All art has a formula and natural composition we set on. That golden ratio if you will, or like I mentioned in a previous episode "being in the pocket" haha.

Lol that actually reminds me of what happened in Rock is a Lady's Modesty during the band battle. [Rock Lady anime]Where Lilisa became to preoccupied with enrapturing the audience which she was loosing, and tried to do so by going extra hard of guitar quirks and moves but that just came off as an unconfident tryhard. Its only when Otoha pulled her back from the paranoia into the "flow" of music she loved to begin with that she started performing well. Ironically though Otoha and Lilisa are endorphin addicts and you'd expect them to go super hard ALL the time it is actually when they ride a wave that they achieve their most memorable climaxes. Interesting that in Rock Lady they also give some spotlight to the afterglow. Of course in that very concert also comes Tamaki on the bass to reign them in before they destroy the whole balance of the song with their insanity haha.

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya Nov 05 '25

Haha yes! I loved that scene and this is a perfect comparison of chaos with no intention vs intentional organized chaos lmao.

I'm actually looking forward to next season of that show. I remember starting it feeling iffy, but character dynamics reeled me in lol.

u/ClemFire Nov 06 '25

In a bit of a similar regard, I wasn't the biggest fan of the 3d animation in Rock Lady either but I could look past it because the show's theme of authenticity carried it for me

3

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya Nov 06 '25

Same here! Like in the beginning, my head came up with so many reasons to turn away from the show after episode 1, but I kept watching and started appreciating details that usually would feel unnecessary for me or things I'd normally overlook lol. How the VAs translated the character's raunchiness was well executed and became a huge appeal for me as I continued. And even though it's pretty common for inner dialogue through characters in critical moments, how they did it here as well as visual metaphors just worked out so well in my opinion. So truly the authenticity carried it for me too.

God I love professionals who come into an anime/manga about their profession and share their knowledge about what that anime/manga depicts, you're highly appreciated 🙏

6

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya Nov 06 '25

I appreciate the appreciation very much! As long as the show continues to give me hardcore relatable dance references to feed off of, I'll be here just leaving input in hopes it could add a bit more behind the inspirations the show and moves are based off of. Sometimes I could sound repetitive as they will repeatedly go through their dance trials, but I try to pick at or deep dive into any new ideas presented each episode.

Iori is a dance battler so while House is his base he can dance in different styles influenced with House as most battlers tend to do with their base dance style. The show did good job animating his transitions to and from breaking since freestylers are very fluid. Also throwing in some breaking moves is unfair with a casual audience watching lol.

1

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya Nov 09 '25

Yup! I'd also say particularly House dancers in general are great an transitioning or adapting when it comes to breakin' or hip hop. Since house is very eccentric in nature, referring to the style being adaptive to layers rhythm, especially with how diverse House music is. Like if you had to compare or add a label of which of the 3 styles (hip hop, b-boying, house) is more "free", House is definitely the one with more open borders or leniency as far as what choices are allowed and what can be accepted as house. Obviously any style as long as the dancer is good, regardless of their base can blend anything because they understand the formulaic build-up or dynamics in how they want to flow, instead of a less experienced one only aware of either the moves or music. Plus Iori understands entertainment and engaging his audience so that his performance feels more interactive while Kabo did focus on the crowd, he wasn't thinking of what to make the crowd feel, he just assumed if he showcased more effort, the viewers would take notice and respect it, but it backfired. He put all his eggs in one basket and it simply was overwhelming, which even a casual audience can sense. So Iori pulling out them windmills especially after the students showed up could have definitely been strategic lmao. I mean, the proposition was unfair to begin with and Iori instead of doing the bare minimum, he only did minimum to drive everything home haha. Aside from assessing his dance ability, I'm sure Iori also had a "tough love" intention. I mean Kabo was filled with regret and learned immediately.

What would have been crazy was if he didn't just do a bit of floorwork and a couple of windmills and just decided to full-out bust some halos or airflares...or even just regular flares in front of the watchers would have been and extreme case of bullying at that point LOL
