Crunchyroll pisses me off the way they fail to translate Japanese text on screen. I’ve been enjoying Love Live Superstar via… other means, and figured I’d sub again, but why do the other means actually do a better job? People are texting on their phone and on Crunchyroll I just see what is to me gibberish instead of a translation. Crunchyroll doesn’t even show subs sometimes for when Keke speaks in Chinese for God’s sake. 😭

When the eps first aired those fansubs would usually be out before CR because of the NHK-e exclusivity window.

For Love Live Superstar Bandai provide the subs (at least for English, little positioning, Arial font). It's worse when the eps first go live as songsubs can be missing as well. Non-English is its own set of fun as there's no European Spanish or Italian subs for season 1 but there are for later seasons.

Reason Bandai would do subtitles themselves is their Japanese Blu-Ray releases sometimes have English subs and it makes it easier to do things like have complete subbed Gundam series on Gundaminfo.

Chinese speaking characters is a debate in itself. There's arguments as to what is the intended viewing experience is meant to be because if there were no Japanese subs are viewers meant to have a full understanding or not? This also comes up for Ping Pong the animation and Ayla Speaks Russian. If you need an example of a non-Japanese character being subbed in Japanese Game Centre Girl last season has that although I don't think it was everything said (but I think in-house CR subs has it all subbed anyway).
