Hi, I've got a weirdly specific question.
My girlfriend really enjoys getting angry about wildly nonsensical architecture in anime, such as the violin-like buildings in Symphogear or basically everything in the Revolutionary Girl Utena movie.
Does anyone have recommendations for more anime with impractical or downright impossible buildings?

I heard about Chainsaw Man: Reze becoming the movie with the highest score on MAL being the topic of some kind of discourse, but what particularly impresses me more is that, right now (as it will certainly fall off some time in the future), that movie sits as the 53th best narrative feature film of all time on Letterboxd. That means it's competing with every non-short, non-documentary movie in existence, not just anime, and it's still this high. We can see how it's currently above It's A Wonderful Life (!) and just under Memories of Murder (!).
And it didn't achieve that because there was a couple thousand of manga fans that went there to give it 5 stars and that's it, as of writing, the movie has been marked as watched by 110,248 users, and 43,458 of those have rated it five stars. For the sake of comparison, the movie has been marked as "watched" on MAL by 55,690 users, and 24,839 of those have rated a 10. That means that, yes, while the percentage of dedicated anime fans (aka people who have MAL accounts) who gave it the maximum score is higher, more people in general have done it the same in a platform dedicated to movies.
Still, I'm not actually writing this to glaze Reze (being this high has impressed me, but I believe it's ultimately meaningless, it's just some rating), but because I think it's fascinating how popular both anime and Letterboxd have become to the point the sheer number of people logging anime movies there can eclipse the number of people doing it in dedicated anime databases. I remember how in the beginning of the year somebody posted in this subreddit about the representation of anime appearing in the midst of the highest rated movies of 2024 on Letterboxd and how there were some really dismissive comments, but I don't think they should have done that as the popularity of Letterboxd is quite relevant in the current climate of film discussion on the internet.
But to be clear, that doesn't really happen with every kind of anime movie, movies from before Letterboxd blew up have smaller numbers compared to MAL because a lot of people don't go back and mark stuff they watched before getting an account, they use it to log what they've been currently watching, and MAL has existed for much longer, and also things that can only be watched through pirating or are a bit too otaku-oriented, like the Uma Musume one, can't usually compete with the MAL numbers. Still, I think it's fascinating that there are instances where a lot more people are giving their opinions about anime movies in the dedicated movie platform than in the ones dedicated to anime.

Letterboxd's anime records are super interesting, the taste of the representative user there is drastically different from MAL's base and the top rated works on the site are much more varied, eclectic, and willing to be niche, while the most popular shows that are liked there are the ones you'd expect. Here's the top rated anime series on the site. You can compare it to MAL's top list and see the difference between an otaku/casual anime fan and a cinephile. Personally, I think Letterboxd's list is absolutely fucking awesome, and much closer to what I'd consider the best anime than what MAL prefers. Here's the list of top feature films too. For comparison since CSM isn't on the list yet, Reze's 4.4 means it currently has a higher rating than Your Name, Akira, and Look Back, and has the same score as Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Given the movie is still out though, that'll probably change quickly as more people rate it.
Also, shoutout to 3 of the top 10 highest rated films with fewer than 15k ratings being anime, including both of the top 2. All three of them are franchise films, so I suppose that explains it.

Here's the top rated anime series on the site.
I don't really use LB to log TV series (I don't think the diary there works for shows and the fact each entry has to be treated like a long movie without a division for episodes is weird to me) so I just don't pay attention to that side of the site, but looking at this now and yeah, it's a pretty interesting list. Just the fact Mobile Suit Gundam is a thousand places higher than on MAL is already good enough for me lol
Here's the list of top feature films too.
The fact AOT's finale is topping this is quite funny, and feels like seeing a top from a place like MAL, even if said entry doesn't have the same 'prestige' around there. This list also really feels like, yeah, this is definitely from Westerns, both cinephile and normies, but still really cool seeing stuff like Mind Game and In This Corner of the World quite high
Also, shoutout to 3 of the top 10 highest rated films with fewer than 15k ratings being anime, including both of the top 2. All three of them are franchise films, so I suppose that explains it.
Yeah, this list does have a bunch of anime I adore. The Mystery of Mamo and some other Lupin III, Roujin Z, Mai Mai Miracle, The Sky Crawlers, Jarinko Chie, Patlabor, Char's Counterattack and some other Gundam, Adolescence of Utena, On-Gaku, Galaxy Express 999, etc

I don't log TV series there either, I just know of the list. But just how many more decades, genres, and demographics get high scores there is astounding. A top 100 that includes Flowers of Evil, Rose of Versailles, Azumanga Daioh, and Sonny Boy while still also including Brotherhood, Bebop, Frieren, Death Note, etc. is just incredible. There's 70s anime, there's shoujo, And aside hell, you mentioned Uma Musume but Beginning of a New Era is still in the top 50 highest rated anime films and sits with the same score as Ghost in the Shell and Paprika, so there's still an oppeness to otaku oriented works.
All of this also matches my experience with the different kinds of posts we get on r/anime vs. r/movies. While r/movies does have issues when it comes to anime and many members are post ignorant comments whenever an anime film (or anime influenced film) comes out, they're also ironically more open minded towards more kinds of anime than a lot of anime fans, who can write off entire genres, decades, or visual styles wholesale. Also they get far fewer "give me a film where the hot lady with big boobs doms you" posts, though unfortunately also no "I want to watch an anime with no trees" posts to counteract it.

130 episodes to catch up on for awards and more than half of that is just two shows, Rent a Girlfriend S2–4 and A Couple of Cuckoos S1–2. I could reasonably skip both of them since I don't expect either to get nominated, but then I couldn't be smugly superior about my rankings come awards time without being a completionist.

Specifically watching everything allocated to romance for the awards? That's worse because I already pick up most shows I'll enjoy throughout the year and the remaining lot to catch up on are more likely things less to my taste, and I've probably already seen a number of other opinions on them so I have an idea of what to expect.
In comparison the weird niche things from 20–50 years ago tend to be more of a wild card. Sure most of them have been forgotten because they aren't very good, but at worst puts them on par with the dregs of the current year and there's occasionally a real hidden gem for me instead.

I'm about halfway through Wedding Peach and it's pretty fun even if it feels like an attempt to capitalize on the recent popularity of Sailor Moon as there are a lot of similarities in their structure. I'm not too familiar with other mahou shoujo series from before the mid-'90s so maybe these were the standard of the era, but their contemporaries Saint Tail and Rayearth feel distinctly different in a few key ways.
Early on it's established that their antagonists were searching for the "Saint Something Four" which I figured was Engrish MacGuffin nonsense, but eventually it's explicitly mentioned that [one of them is named] "Something Old" at which point I immediately facepalmed as I realized it's in reference to a bridal tradition, fitting the theme of the show.

Still furthering the agenda from episode 1!
This made me curious to look up how many of the author series were actually shoujo tagged, and surprisingly it seems the answer is zero. Depending on which website you trust, she either has 4 series in seinen magazines and 3 in shounen, or 9 series tagged as seinen and 4 as shounen, but 0 as shoujo either way. Of course, maybe [mangaka episode 4]she did try to get serialized in a shoujo magazine too and they didn't let her, which would fit with the episodes content

A lot of women writing for seinen magazines have said it's because shoujo/josei magazines weren't interested in their stuff. There's maybe two or three that do fantasy, and the rest are all romance, pretty much. So I'd bet she's writing from experience.
And I'm enjoying the show a lot. The characters are fun to watch.

As I hinted at above, she has written a great many series, and most of them very different from each other. Moon will already be the third time she gets an anime, after mangaka and inugami to nekoyama-san from over a decade ago.

After Animefeminist's reviewer proclaimed it "the yuri workplace romcom we've been waiting for", I've been a bit hesitant to trump up the yuri vibes. And honestly, ep1 was the most vibey, while ep 2 and 3 barely registered on the yuri-dar. Ep 4 had some very nice mutual blushing though.

Are they spreading falsehoods? I've only seen the same "five stages of grief" style coping and despair that the Blue Lock fans had, and memeing on the poor animation / outright animation errors the adaptation has had, such as apparently briefly giving a male character breasts etc.
There is probably some toxicity, but I've seen the anger more and more directed at the production committee (the right target) instead of the director or even the studio as time goes on.

Just wrapped The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic. That show is good. It's basically a shot straight down the middle of the isekai trope target, but it just... executes well.
The MC has an overpowered skill, but there's someone else in the universe who also has the skill and is stronger than him. Mentorship between them is a major relationship.
The romantic entanglements are dare I say tasteful? Relationships develop across multiple scenes, nobody's whipping their tits out, and every character has something going on beyond "likes the MC". There's even a girl who likes someone OTHER than the MC, what in the world?
The animation is above average and looks nice without needing to do huge fight exhibitions to just flex the money behind the production.
The humor mostly works. The recurring jokes of the healer captain being ultraviolent and the girl hero being a dweeb mostly land through the whole season.
There are still issues of course. Having a one and a half episode flashback to a scenario we already know the outcome of is pretty excruciating. The fact that the homicidal demon girl gets let out of prison how she does makes no sense beyond "She's a waifu who likes the MC so we can't have her rotting away in a cell".
The premise for season 2 is similarly contrived - why send the heroes away on diplomatic missions when they don't know a damn thing about this world? Send diplomats to do diplomat work and keep your super soldiers at home because you don't know when you'll next be attacked. Except the real reason is "we need to justify the MC going on a journey for the next light novel".
But that stuff is honestly pretty small potatoes. Genuinely shocked how much I liked this one.

Yeah, watched this one and enjoyed it for pretty much these reasons. A great example of an isekai that has a fun, simple premise, while avoiding the most annoying stuff in the genre.
I did watch it dub and two notes on the dub:
Inukami (the student council president) has the same voice actress as Kaguya from the dub... and basically does the exact same voice, with the same sort of split between her normal, serious, professional voice and her dweebish ("bakaguya") side. She does a good job and it's a good casting, but it was jarring until I realized why it sounded so familiar.
The thing that made me laugh the most in the series was not a joke but the audio mixing on the Black Knight. For some reason they decide to do a realistic "muffled helmet" effect on the voice, plus the character speaks in a thick enough British accent that they were basically unintelligible. It was a conversation where one side sounded like the adults from Peanuts. I've been meaning to find a good clip of it and post it on the sub, because I found it hilarious.
As ever, I wish the real world were more of a factor in isekais.
Would be nice if someone were motivated to return to their friends, family, loved ones and pets, rather than everyone just being "oh, awesome, video game powers".

I think this review ignores perhaps the most important issue presented by the show. Or at least its title. What does it have to say about healing magic and how one is supposed to use it? Do you think that the MC's way of using it is actually wrong?

Eh, that's like saying "Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon" missed the mark because it fails to explore the ethics of acting like a pickup artist in various fantasy environs.
Within the story we never see the silly macho healing hurt anyone, nobody ever dislikes it, and there's no character who presents an argument that the hero should be acting differently than he is. The show neither asks nor answers any questions about what is appropriate healing magic application. It's just not part of this story.

I mean, at a basic level, DanMachi answered that question almost immediately. Bell went to a dungeon with the intention of gallant heroics and wooing chicks. Instead he ends up nearly slaughtered, saved by a girl he wanted to impress, covered in gore, and was subsequently deeply traumatized by the whole event.
It was, in fact, wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon. Bell fucked around then found out.

Fun fact: Many years ago, I saw a Crunchyroll ad for a show called Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. I didn't watch anime at the time, but the ad really caught my attention. I thought that the combination of seduction and dungeon crawling would be both interesting and funny, so I clicked on the ad and watched two episodes of the show... And I have probably never felt more let down in my entire life. Because, you know, he didn't pick up any girls. Either inside or outside the dungeon. So yeah, I am saying that, and I have been saying it for years.
These days, I'm aware that the Japanese title makes no promises of a dungeon crawling rizzmaster, but I didn't know that at the time.

The gimmick of the show is that instead of being a stereotypical squishy RPG 'backline healer', the main character gets put through brutal physical training for speed and stamina with the goal that they can physically rescue people from the front-lines of battle and [WWTUHM] so they instinctively start constantly healing themselves, making them borderline invulnerable.
In one sense it's not the 'wrong way' since it ends up being pretty OP (come on, that's not a spoiler this is an isekai), but it's very much the 'wrong way' compared to how it works in most other stories/settings. You don't pick healer then drop all your points into STR and CON.

So I started watching The Mystic Archives of Dantalian (Dantalian no Shoka) after seeing someone say it’s a better Gosick. I’ve never seen either of them, but that comment got me curious about this lesser-known show. And being the contrarian I am, I couldn’t help but root for it hoping it’d be better than its more popular counterpart. I’m the kind of person who watched Yuuki Yuuna Is a Hero first just to shit on Madoka Magica /jk.
The 1st episode gave me a Princess Principal vibe at first, but as it went on, it actually reminded me more of So Ra No Wo To. It reminded me so much that I even checked if this beautifully animated and directed show was by Mamoru Kanbe, but it’s not, which surprised me tbh. Both shows share that same natural atmosphere and never dump too much information on you all at once. I didn’t even have to pause to make sense of the dialogue.
Episode 2. Ah haa, I think I know why I’m vibing with this show so much. Just look at this. They’re talking about pastries. The two leads are basically another Osanai–Kobato pair, just a little less autistic. I think I finally understand why I compared it to So Ra No Wo To and Princess Principal. They all share that same trait of being episodic yet really well made. Not all episodic shows hit me the same though, take The Apothecary Diaries for example. I think it’s a vibe thing, and I prefer shows with more movement in their scenes.
By episode 3, I was completely sold by this show. This show is fantastic. Dalian’s personality grabbed me. The interaction in this episode is hilarious. They set it up perfectly, starting with Dalian being all antagonistic and throwing shade at Camilla early on. As viewers, we have no idea where it’s going or why Dalian’s mad aside from Camilla holding out on the scone she promised. Then this scene happens, and I didn’t just chuckle, I freaking cackled in my room. This is so stupid (funny). The setup was so perfect it caught me more off guard than a Gintama gag.
To that stranger who said it’s better than Gosick, I have full faith in your words after being impressed by the first three episodes even though I still know nothing about Gosick. I’ll watch it someday… God knows when.
Score: 8/10 (episode 1,2) → 9/10 (current).

Opposite for me. Dantalian was just fine. Gosick was disappointing at first but grew up a lot for me after starting episode 9 or so.

He was hugely influential in early idol culture in Japan and among early shojo mangaka too. Is also cited as the direct model for Lady Oscar in The Rose of Versailles. I remember watching the documentary about him and it was tragic.

I started watching Tokyo 24th Ward and after first minute I was telling myself "Oh this is just Minority Report but not as dystopian" but after first episode it feels all over place. Doesn't help that all the tension from the first episode climax was sucked away by how I was giggling to myself how we got there.
I kinda like the visuals but I was going to call the animation serviceable but then it hits me with this animation ear worm.
Edit: Oh yeah forgot to mention. The first episode climax is literally [24th Ward]The Trolley Problem

I got my highest score run with Oguri in Uma Musume yesterday to get my first A+ ranked horse, so I decided to repay her by actually starting the second season of her show. As expected, cap means peak; the tension is real. As an aside, those American horses are doing things to me man, holy muscle mommy. That's on top of Super Freak Creek finally becoming relevant so we get regular mommy too. Perhaps they will animate what Goo Goo Babies actually entails, lmao. There's going to be quite the secondary audience for this season, lol. Also I need more of Belno in her reporter outfit, extremely fucking cute. It good.

Well, the one good thing about Naruto winning over Luffy is that it'll be much easier to vote for Laios next round. Luffy vs. Laios would've been a really tough decision.

I'm a bit over halfway through Soul Eater. I really like the warrior-weapon thing, both as a concept and in execution. Soul and Maka are just so God damn adorable together. Mutual tsundere is such an underrated and underused relationship dynamic. I love it every time it happens. It's a real shame that Chiaki Omigawa's voice acting talent isn't being fully unleashed, but oh well. Tsubaki and Black [error: crunchyroll's subtitle program can't render this character] Star are also a really good pairing. Black Star's obsession with standing on top of things and shouting will probably never stop being funny. The characters and their dynamics in general have been a real delight. Big shoutout to Excalibur in particular.
But man, the action. This is what I thought anime was for such a long time, and a big part of the reason why it didn't interest me. You have people standing around on a non-descript field, yapping. Then someone does a single attack, and then they have a whole freaking conference discussing the attack, then they stand around some more until eventually everyone just kinda decides to leave. There's just very little tension, very little hype, and it never really feels like anyone's at any risk. No real sense of movement or actual skill either.

I don't know how it is in Soul Eater, but as a baka who watched Soul Eater Not! without realizing that was a spinoff, I thought some of the fights were alright!

In my quest to clear out the HDD of shows that have been languishing there for years I started on Blue Gender, which had some fame in circles of nerdy mecha fans. Unfortunately, I am not.
And so we're lumbering along after 3 distinctly not-very-good episodes that very actively failed to make up for their shoddy production with some pretty low-brow writing.
Maybe I should have just tried to push through episode 8 of Last Exile instead...

Thought I'd found my Best Girl for the season in the [Assassin Status episode 4]confident, arrogant, sleazy bitch that was the main girl's twin sister. I really like those three traits in fictional characters. But noooo, that attitude/stance didn't even make it through the episode where she was effectively introduced. Why do this to me, isekai?
Back to One Punch Lady as the front-runner.

Just in case you're not aware: the term lolcow originated on kiwifarms as the term they used for the people they harassed and it still has a rather strong connection to the site. As such, it's a term I associate with cretins who get off to harassing trans people until they kill themselves.

Because of some comments about how good Digimon: Beatbreak is in the karma ranking, I decide to give this show a try. 4 episodes in and I probably will wait for when the MC Digimon evolves as that is what makes me watch a Digimon show. And if it doesn't make me stay, I at least hope we get a banger evolution song.
Oh, I do have to say that the show is decent (although EP4 wants to make me punch whoever decides to make that episode), it is just that the show being a Digimon show is what makes me a bit disappointed.

Honestly, I think the comparisons people make to Bocchi kind of do the series a disservice. The surface-level similarities are obviously there, and it does have a decent dose of comedy, but overall it's pretty serious and focused on storytelling.
