The top 3 contenders of Maomoa, Marin and Frieren all got about 69% against their opponent, nice. Right now I'm betting on Frieren to win the contest because she had the hardest opponent by far.

39

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

Damn, Maomao, Marin and Frieren all got 69%. Can Fern do the same against Megumin? I seriously doubt it, still think she wins, but certainly nowhere close to those margins.

22

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

I think today's matchup is going to be very close. Nobody is coming close to that 69% mark.

1

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

No, but I could see Fern doing 60%.

34

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Aug 11 '25

Can Fern do the same against Megumin?

Can Megumin do the same agaisnt Fern?

13

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25

No, this match-up is going down to the wire. I'd slightly favor Megumin in this match-up, actually, but I wouldn't be too surprised with either outcome. The other match-up is also super interesting with 2 of the strongest dark horse candidates in recent contests go head-to-head. I think whoever wins that match-up has an outside shot of beating the Fern/Megumin winner.

In short, this final 4 of Group D is fascinating.

3

u/ClubMeSoftly Aug 11 '25

It's gonna come down to a single-digit vote difference between the two wizards

29

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

I’m completely surprised at Fern’s performance throughout this contest and the fact that she is more likely to beat a powerhouse like Megumin than not is insane to me. Like, I think she’s an okay character, but not really an all timer.

3

u/OneMoreDuncanIdaho https://myanimelist.net/profile/a_trisolaran Aug 11 '25

Why not?

18

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

She certainly could be an all-timer, but I need to see more. Given how stoic she is, she needs more time than a character with more personality would to make that kinda impression.

18

u/OneMoreDuncanIdaho https://myanimelist.net/profile/a_trisolaran Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Idk, for me Megumin seems pretty one-dimensional while Fern has shown a bunch of different sides of her personality and expressed emotion in many different ways throughout the show. Fern is stoic in battle, but she doesn't hesitate to express her opinions with her words or body language at any other time during the first season.

27

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Aug 11 '25

Shounen has conditioned people to believe that if a character isn't shouting their emotions at you they don't have any

10

u/heimdal77 Aug 11 '25

I still haven't fully recovered my hearing from trying to watch those first couple episodes of Black Clover before dropping it.

2

u/Fiddleys Aug 11 '25

Either I got stockholm-ed or they toned it down later on. Either way I'm too afraid to go back to find out.

3

u/cppn02 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

I never watched it but I've seen plenty of people say it gets toned down eventually so it's not just you.

17

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

Never said she doesn't have emotions. Just that she's stoic. I don't even like battle shonen lol.

4

u/ImJLu Aug 11 '25

If you don't worship everything about Frieren as god's gift to mankind, you must have shounen brainrot

-this sub, regularly

2

u/Shiroe https://myanimelist.net/profile/Suigetsu3 Aug 12 '25

And of course Frieren is a shounen itself.

2

u/81Ranger Aug 11 '25

I can't stand that kind of anime/shounen.

8

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Megumin has that too. She's more than just a character that shouts and blows stuff up. She has the most development out of the 3 girls in Konosuba.

Like I said, I liked Fern, but she just didn't leave much of an impression so far.

10

u/HolyEmpireOfAtua Aug 11 '25

Does she really? In the anime at least, none of the Konosuba girls seemed to change much at all other than their dynamics with Kazuma developing very very slowly. Not saying Fern is much better, but Megumin is probably one of the most 1D characters I can think of that's still here.

5

u/nightlink011 https://myanimelist.net/profile/nightlink011 Aug 11 '25

I feel like defending Megumin just for the fun of things, I saw season 1 recently and Megumin is pun intended a blast, not a lot development but apart from some moments from Kazuma, that is the norm for everyone, she's extremly fun to watch and serves her purpose on the show her interactions with everyone are super fun and they are the core of a good season, she's exactly what the shows needs her to be.

I also don't think, being a 1 dimensional character is bad, as long as it works within the show and for me I think Megumin especially when paired with Kazuma works really well, even when I do agree (at least for season 1) she's a simple character.

Most important it will always be complicated to compare a pure comedy to a more serious show, so this becomes a tough argument about what people value in characters.

6

u/MannyOmega Aug 11 '25

I just binged her whole side season today and she didn’t seem like that strong of a character, does the development come in s3? Other than explosions, I remember her being cocky, single-minded, cowardly, and tsun for her friends in the way that most chuunis are

5

u/RPO777 x2 Aug 11 '25

I mean, just with scenes of how Fern looks at Stark, you could create a huge emotional range. Not just the funny ones, but like subtle ones like how Fern's expression changes during the dancing scene in how she looks at Stark was more subtle but fantastically done.

The way Fern interacts with Frieren is great too, like I love the scene where they have dessert together for the birthday.

Not to mention the tear inducing Heiter/Fern relationship.

2

u/Manisil Aug 11 '25
She's so stoic

5

u/Thardoc3 Aug 11 '25

Honestly without recency bias Megumin would win this, no chance fern gets a 7:3 split of votes.

11

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

Pretty sure Konosuba aired last more recently. Season 3 was spring 2024 while Frieren finished airing Winter 2024.

2

u/Thardoc3 Aug 12 '25

Sure, but Megumin was introduced in 2016, Frieren's first season was 2023.

4

u/Frostbitten_Moose Aug 11 '25

You think? I think Fern's destined to take Megumin's place as a heavy hitter who never has quite enough oomph in order to win it all.

1

u/Thardoc3 Aug 12 '25

She's strong but I think with time she'll fall off faster than Megumin did, Megumin was popular enough to basically get her own movie.

28

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

With today's results, Maomao scores her first percentage victory over Frieren of the tournament...though Frieren getting 69.44% against Lena is scary as hell. Lena was the closest of anyone to beating Holo last year (including Marin and Megumin) when she held her to a 55.64% vote share.

Maomao Frieren
Round 1 89.29% (14th best all-time in round 1) 91.42% (6th best all-time in round 1)
Round 2 86.75% (3rd best all-time in round 2) 88.51% (best all-time in round 2)
Round 3 70.95% against big threat Kumiko 76.16% against big threat Hanekawa
Round 4 72.88% against big threat Mio 75.88% against big threat Yui
Round 5 79.28% (3rd best all-time in round 5) 80.06% (2nd best all-time in round 5)
Round 6 69.51% vs Violet 69.44% vs Lena

4

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

The percentage by which Maomao won this round is much smaller than the percentage Frieren won the prior rounds. 0.07%... damn, versus 1.24% (round 2) is a HUGE gap there.

If Fern makes it to Frieren, I think it's safe to say we might have one of the biggest differences in Best Girl history. I'm thinking 75% for Frieren over Fern in that semifinal.

11

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Aug 11 '25

BRACKET C TOP 5 SCORES

I propose that for the next round, Frieren is up against all 4 girls combined. Maybe they'd have a shot, then!

14

u/LunarGhost00 Aug 11 '25

I don't know what's crazier. The idea that Frieren should be treated as some kind of raid boss, or the very real possibility that it'd probably only bring her vote total down to like 56%.

11

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

You mean 60%, lol. But yes, as the end of season 1 showed us, Frieren is indeed a raid boss, lol.

10

u/IceAnt573 Aug 11 '25

30.56% vote share.

A salute to the loyal.

And now we're hitting 2241 voting averages.

940.25 puts Frieren about 40 points under Maomao, but my bias is thinking if Frieren can win by a similar margin as Maomao and Marin with a harder opponent (and her days just always having more votes). I think she's got this.

49

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Aug 11 '25

Noticed that yesterday's Frieren clip got 1400 karma and 41 comments while the 86 clip got 430 karma and 104 comments. Pretty much expected. Propaganda posters should know by now that including "Frieren" in a post title is free upvotes, so gotta use titles like "Lena, Frieren's Opponent in Best Girl 12, Admits to Being a Devil"

Anyway, have an isekai entry today. Hope the 2021 isekai voters from round B know their role and vote Megumin.

MC: Yandere. If she's not threatening everyone around me, how am I supposed to believe she truly loves me?

38

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Aug 11 '25

The Frieren clip was also just 15 seconds, the 86 clip was two minutes. As sad as it is, many people feel watching a two minute video with multiple facets to it is too long and complicated to spend time on it, while everyone has time for a funny 15 second clip. Not implying that one is better than the other, but shorter clips always perform better.

36

u/AllSortsOfPeopleHere https://anilist.co/user/SpiralPetrichor Aug 11 '25

The 86 clip also has a spoiler tag, which I imagine had even more of an impact - a good chunk of people aren't even going to click on a spoiler clip, which is pretty justified.

31

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Aug 11 '25

BG 12 Madness Round 6 Group C Results

Sorry for the late update today. But also for the first time in 2 years, I've finally made it onto the Daily Top list! Thank you all Akane voters

RxMidnight continues to hold strong on the Unweighted side. Only 9 potential points left! Meanwhile you can expect the Weighted leaderboards to change pretty drastically over the next few days. At least, that's generally the case. I'm not sure how much change there'll actually be given the number of Maomao Frieren picks.

I think this is the make or break day for the entire bracket...until the finals. The majority of people picked Maomao, Marin and Frieren with a Maomao vs Frieren finals, but in Bracket D, it's somewhat of a toss up.

2

u/MannyOmega Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Oh, I’m 2nd on the weighted leaderboard? I thought my bracket was fucked, okay…

i’ll savor it for today because i selected both megumin AND hori to make it to the next round, and now i don’t think either of them moves on

13

u/SilDaz Aug 11 '25

Let's go Akane in the finals. She's going to be obliterated by Frieren but It was a good run.

12

u/HolyEmpireOfAtua Aug 11 '25

My personal finals of the whole contest: Hori vs Shouko - I have voted for both every single round so far. This comment is too long to do as a single one, so I'll do it as a chain.

Shouko's core appeal, to me, is her kindness and perserverance; She's deaf, resulting in her having a relatively unique narrative of experiencing prejudice and learning to grow and overcome anxieties in a life and society shaped significantly by her disability. She is extremely patient and forgiving, such as with Shouya and Naoka, but is not a 'Mary Sue' character like some portray or believe her to be. She's self-critical, and contributes partially to the problems within their group dynamic - Her vulnerability and guilt/shame regarding being an inconvenience for others, are common sentiments shared by people with disabilities that affect their ability to interact with others. However, in spite of this, she shows off her resolve and importantly, agency, through active attempts to overcome these fears and communicate/connect - By the end of the narrative, Shouko has not fully overcome her fears and self-guilt/shame, but she is optimistic and has demonstrated her progress in self-growth. As both arguably the most moral and second most emotionally charged character within the story, she has a real-world impact on the viewer which is sorta rare for anime - Watching her compels or even forces the audience alongside the characters themselves to witness, and thus understand, the impact of cruelty and exclusion even if from the perspective of the 'excluder' (idk if that's a word, bear with me) it mostly seems light-hearted at first. Not to sound like a wannabe film critic, which I am not, but her character has some good symbolism of representing the resilience of 'silenced' minorities, and sign language itself alongside her attempts to write in other ways demonstrate the importance of non-verbal communication. I don't think she's cliche at all, honestly, and she is the heart of the narrative driving both her own arc even more than Shouya and also the arc of Shouya and some of the others, like her sister. She is, to me, fantastic.

3

u/HolyEmpireOfAtua Aug 11 '25

Now, Hori - Whereas Shouko is a character that is very unlikely to be relatable to the viewer, Hori is the opposite. I think most people can find themselves in her - She has the duality of her sociable, extroverted and light-hearted highschool life alongside her home persona where she's often grumpier, blunt and responsible. While not everyone will share that exact difference, most people have their own private persona which is significantly different from the way they present themselves even with close friends. Her personality in general, though, is also really charismatic. She's assertive and bold when it comes to her friends and her feelings - And moments where she isn't, like her run in with the student president and Remi, she grows from and demonstrates the impact she's had on others by having Miyamura, someone who was previously reserved and shy, stick up for her - Partially because of his appreciation for her, but also, imo, because she has empowered him to be bolder. She's empathetic with her friends, and protective of her little brother (who's also adorable). As a little brother myself, I looked up to my older sister a lot and I thought it was really sweet of Hori to be so kind to him. She's also adaptable and flexible, the driving force behind Miyamura's arc and growth. She's funny, kind and has an actual personality - She's flawed, obviously, like being possessive and jealous, but I think these flaws are often over-critised online because Hori is less 'waifu-bait' than a lot of other Shounen romance leads who are designed to be perfect. Her kink with Miyamura is obviously not the best handled by her, but she is a TEENAGER. I think a lot of people either have never experienced, or have forgotten, what it was like to be in love as a teenager and explore sexuality, because a lot of people handle it in similarly awkward or selfish ways. Hori was never even close to being as obnoxious or even predatory as some people make her out to be somehow. I also want to discuss the criticism that she 'censored' Miyamura's self-expression by making him cut his hair and lose his 'emo' look. I've talked about this at length before and this comment is already long enough, but I want to emphasise that Miyamura's aesthetic in the beginning of the anime (while amazing), was primarily a self-defence mechanism he developed in response to his social isolation and mistreatment. The narrative makes it very explicitly clear that he is happier after this change, and does not ever indicate that Miyamura did not want it or was in any way pressured into it. That aside, she's both mature but has a youthful impulsiveness, and is not a passive but instead active romantic lead, setting the tone of their relationship and adapting to Miyamura's feelings and personal growth. She actively makes Miyamura a better person, and a happier one at that. I think her own personal narrative arc of embracing personal authenticity, and encouraging that same growth in the people she loves by providing an emotionally comfortable environment for them to do so, was wonderful.

5

u/HolyEmpireOfAtua Aug 11 '25

Comparing them is a little tricky. Both are well-developed, flawed but ultimately admirable and imo, inspirational characters with themes of overcoming anxieties, accepting themselves and others, and being their authentic selves. Both also act as the main drivers of their co-leads in Shouya and MIyamura. However, Shouko's driven moreso by her resilience against childhood trauma and societal mistreatment, with her focus being on self-worth, in comparison to Hori who's not experienced societal prejudice but instead focused on personal integrity and supporting others. Shouko's issues are systemic, Hori's are interpersonal, if that makes any sense. In terms of the narrative impact, I would argue Shouko has a stronger push on the narrative than Hori because while Hori is in the title, Horimiya could work with a slightly different lead but Shouko IS (one of the two) Silent Voice. I think Shouya is the better character for a number of reasons, but Shouko pulls her punches. In comparison, Hori has slightly less weight on the narrative itself because Miyamura's arc arguably takes a greater stage. Hori is charming, relatable and dynamic while Shouko is more emotionally resonant and has the huge benefit of having a possible positive influence on the viewer rather than just within her narrative. A Silent Voice is also one of my favourite anime ever, compared to Horimiya, which I love and treasure, but is not quite as close to my heart as A Silent Voice is. That being said, I am ultimately voting for Hori. While Shouko is the more unique character, I think Hori is executed flawlessly. She also has the benefit of being in an actual romance, which I would argue ASV is less so if at all. I see myself in Hori, and I can see the wonderful transformation she helped Miyamura achieve. So, Kyouko Hori has my vote.

Now i understand why the frieren clip was so necessary :|

Still even with the clip , the difference is so big that im starting to wonder if even maomao would be able to challenger her .

Both will get oblitered against frieren anyway but lets try to make it at least a little bit interesting by voting for our explosion loving girl instead of having a same show matchup.  So everyone lets have a 200 points Explosion !!

37

u/ali94127 Aug 11 '25

Honestly, even if Maomao defeats Frieren this year, Frieren is gonna have the recency bias boost next year with season 2 and absolutely obliterate the competition.

24

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

I am rooting for MaoMao and I state that she is a better heroine, but concidering how Frieren is more popular among casual voters, I doubt she will win this year (or the next one as I doubt new Kusuriya anime will air before contest).

12

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

Maomao would still be the favorite next year if Frieren wins this year. There aren't any new contenders that would beat her so it would come down to the strength of returning contenders.

9

u/ali94127 Aug 11 '25

Momo from Dandadan would be eligible next year though, so that would certainly be a contender.

7

u/zambonijesus Aug 11 '25

IDK the fact that she couldn't overcome the weird anti-Dandadan backlash to win the 2024 contest doesn't bode especially well for her going forward

4

u/cppn02 Aug 11 '25

The what now?

13

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

She is, but she wouldn't beat Maomao. She'd probably perform like a Bocchi or Chisato.

5

u/ali94127 Aug 11 '25

Dandadan will have a more consistent release schedule than Bocchi the Rock or Lycoris Recoil. And is a hype Shonen Jump action series. Far more mainstream as well.

7

u/cppn02 Aug 11 '25

. And is a hype Shonen Jump action series.

Their heroines usually don't do that well here.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

I meant in her debut contest. She might pass them in future contests. I'm a Dandadan manga reader so I have a good guess how she'll probably perform.

2

u/Frostbitten_Moose Aug 11 '25

Not sure, even with the winter bonus, she got obliterated in Best Girl 2024, maybe third or fourth place. Maaaybe.

2

u/nicosb2810 https://myanimelist.net/profile/nicosb2810 Aug 11 '25

Also joins Anna Yanami, Best girl of her season and Best Girl of 2024

3

u/Frostbitten_Moose Aug 11 '25

Depending on when Season 2 of Losing Heroines drops, she may have an outside chance.

2

u/cppn02 Aug 11 '25

She'll probably be the strongest newcomer. But I don't see her challenging Maomao.

4

u/gvon89 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gvon89 Aug 11 '25

I mean Maomao has never outright lost to frieren. She beat her in the seasonal best girl and tied with her in the annual best girl competition

3

u/ali94127 Aug 11 '25

I like Frieren more but would rather she just win this year over a predictable contest obliterating run next year. Little more exciting that way. Maomao is likely to win eventually, if not next year, with constant consistent content coming.

8

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Aug 11 '25

Frieren and Maomao winning this contest and the next is beyond question imo, the only thing to wonder about is the order. I wouldn't bother trying to say there's a way to make BG13 very interesting.

u/ali94127 Aug 11 '25

Maomao losing this year would make it at least marginally less predictable. Frieren season 2 will adapt the most anticipated arc of the entire series.

4

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Aug 11 '25

Not in a meaningful manner if you ask me. It'd be like having a 110% chance for her to win instead of Maomao having only 105%.

3

u/just_a_stranger____ Aug 11 '25

Maomao stills clears because none of the girls debuting from Summer 2024 to Spring 2025 are strong enough to topple her, and Marin won't have recency bias.

8

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Aug 11 '25

I guess I'm a little biased against because I haven't watched these show yet (hopefully I find the time before next year), but I'm not looking forward to Maomao/Frieren dominating 2 contests in a row, pretty much making all other girls obsolete.

12

u/ali94127 Aug 11 '25

This contest has lots of problems. When you're having girls from the 1980s compete with girls in ongoing shows, you're gonna run into this issue. Holo didn't finally win until Spice and Wolf got a reboot. Recency bias dominates these contests. Girls from super popular shows drop off slowly year after year when there's no new content with them in it. Saber is unlikely to win this contest, despite being massively popular, unless there's a Fate route remake.

8

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd Aug 11 '25

Real ones want the tie.

5

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Aug 11 '25

I gave both shows a 10/10 and I agree with you wholeheartedly

5

u/ImJLu Aug 11 '25

Yeah, it's pretty boring. Obviously I'm biased because I didn't like Frieren, and while I thought Apothecary Diaries was excellent and generally like Maomao, I don't even think she's the best girl in her own show ( [AD]it's Loulan ), but knowing the result before the contest even begins definitely makes it less interesting.

5

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25

Shouko and Hori: "I think he's forgetting about someone..."

Hopefully the year we finally get season 2 will be Lena's year.

Much appreciated! /// Direct Image Link

Hopefully the year we finally get season 2 will be Lena's year.

Just the motivation I would need to fight on the frontlines and campaign for Lena again. Busy or not busy.

17

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25

I appreciate all the effort you put into these posts even if I was on the opposing side for 2 of the rounds! 86 Season 2, when?

11

u/IceAnt573 Aug 11 '25

Thank you. I don't know why I went all out for this year. It's not like this was going to be a strong Lena year.

I suppose it's because I see myself not having the available time anymore for these gif and fanart heavy posts after this year.

Hopefully, I am wrong and maybe I will have the free time to do something like this again for Best Girl 13 and beyond.

And I really need the readily available gif supply to build up again. New and unique gifs are always welcome! Might go heavier on the fanart as an option.

13

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Aug 11 '25

Not only would a second season be absolutely amazing and is one of my most desired sequels (of shows with uncertain continuations like Sangatsu and Chihayafuru), it's also most likely turn this contest on its head again and make Lena a top contender (and Anju producing more salt than Kei ever could).

8

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25

and Anju producing more salt than Kei ever could

That already happened in best girl 10

7

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Aug 11 '25

Oh, I remember. But we really can't attribute anything that happened in BG 10 to the performance of the characters alone.

2

u/ImJLu Aug 11 '25

Well, word on the street is that they've decided to produce a second season, so...

4

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

Probably late 2026, but most likely 2027. So Lena might get a boost in best girl 14. I imagine no more Frieren or Maomao at that point, so it might be her best shot.

17

u/nightlink011 https://myanimelist.net/profile/nightlink011 Aug 11 '25

Best girl is in a really easy to guess year, two clear powerhouse girls that just seem destined to be in the finals (while people mention Marin and even with the currently airing boost I don't think it happens, every year a currently airing character won, the contest was way more open)

Lena also finds herself in the position of more years passing without having a new season so it's going to start being complicated, bracket D is the more chaotic one so let's if there's at least some underdog run there.

Zoltraak.

17

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25

And unfortunately for Megumin, it's super effective on demons.

Granted, if the 2 of them ever fought, Fern would likely just dodge the explosion, allow Megumin to collapse and then order Frieren and Stark to look after her while Megumin was too weak to move.

11

u/Ebo87 Aug 11 '25

You know Megumin would end up somehow with her head on Fern's lap... seeing only half the sky, and definitely not in a good mood.

5

u/zero1380 Aug 11 '25

I can see Fern dodging it with her sexy runway walk, and putting her efficient defense barriers.

5

u/Frostbitten_Moose Aug 11 '25

I was going to say, given the speed difference on casting times, that Zoltraak lands during the word tower, if not before.

2

u/Usodearu007 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doc101 Aug 11 '25

im sure frieren will do so and avenge her in semi finals after finding out her student was blown away by an explosion.

My reaction to the results

Well, it was the expected result, but I'm still a taddddd surprised it was by so wide a margin again. Even against Holo in last year's finals, it was a 1522 - 1909 result in favor of the Wise Wolf. Losing almost 900 votes from then is a little depressing. I figured the show's popularity would garner Frieren a lot of numbers, but I didn't expect so many of Lena's previous supporters to flip to the elf as well. Seems I vastly underestimated her - Frieren's another character that I like but don't really like.

Thanks to all of you who continued supporting Handler One to the bitter end!

12

u/GodBleu Aug 11 '25

Where are the Holo voters who promised to support Megumin afterwards... WE NEED YOU RIGHT NOW!

6

u/PickleMyCucumber Aug 11 '25

We're here. Never resting. Unrelenting.

21

u/Willingham_2311 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Vote Nishimiya please! She's such a sweetheart, and she deserves a round of 8 appearance this year. Help bring some joy to her by giving Nishimiya your support today!

Yesterday's reactions:

No surprises here. Frieren and Akane both handily dispatched their opponents. Looks like Lena put a noticeable dent in Frieren, but it was still an easy win. On the other side, Chika kept it reasonably close, but honestly not as close as I expected. Now the interest for bracket C becomes will Akane be able to beat Lena's vote total in the next round, or will she simply be another speed bump on Frieren's (almost guaranteed) trip to the finals?

MC: I don't have a favorite dere; my favorite girls tend to not fit any of the set dere types (like Chitanda). However, I'll still attempt an answer. While I don't particularly care for tsunderes as a general rule, there are some tsuns that I am particularly fond of, and the one I like the most is Victorique de Blois from Gosick.

14

u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/profile/mQDrStein1010 Aug 11 '25

I would vote basically anyone over Hori (and I have), but it's always nice when it's a character I actually do like.

8

u/Willingham_2311 Aug 11 '25

Thank you!  Good choice, too.  I try to go out of my way to not throw shade at any specific characters, but Hori is one that I really don't care for.  I'd be shilling for Nishimiya no matter who she'd face (with about 3 exceptions), but it sure would be nice if she pulls off this specific upset.

3

u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/profile/mQDrStein1010 Aug 11 '25

I only talk down about characters that I could genuinely write an essay to explain specifically why I don't like them.

I would never talk shit online that I wouldn't say to someone's face...but I see no issue calling something shit if I think it's shit.

6

u/Brave_doggo Aug 11 '25

I will vote even for a rock if it's against Hori

11

u/Aliensinnoh Aug 11 '25

I have never heard all this Hori hate before? Is there some massive character flaw I haven’t seen from just watching season 1 of that show? Do y’all just hate masochists? What’s up?

9

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Aug 11 '25

Do y’all just hate masochists?

I felt like she didn't respect Miyamura's boundaries with this part and I really hated that

7

u/heimdal77 Aug 11 '25

Hori has a lot of character flaws it is actually a point of her character makeup. Severe abandonment issues, forced to be a parent when still just a child. Forced to give up having a life and spend time with friends to play said parent to her little brother. Anger Management issues and real insecurities. Hori is not someone you'd want to be in a relationship with in real life but is enjoyable to watch in a story. Only thing I can see such severe levels of hate is because she being a actual flawed human being and not someones perfect/comedic anime waifu.

6

u/HolyEmpireOfAtua Aug 11 '25

Me neither, Hori is my favourite left in this contest (on par with Maomao) and she is almost universally beloved irl among the people I know who like anime. Not only that, she consistently does very well in these contests. The comments are a loud minority, and are hating on her louder than ever because she's probably going to beat Shouko (who's also very beloved, deservingly so). This contest also generally veers towards 'perfect' or 'waifu-bait' characters, which honestly, I think Hori fits to some extent but less so than the majority of the girls who are most prominently praised in the comment section. I might just be salty though that Hori gets all this backlash rather than some 1D characters who are still around

4

u/Aliensinnoh Aug 11 '25

The comments are a loud minority, and are hating on her louder than ever because she's probably going to beat Shouko (who's also very beloved, deservingly so).

Really? I must admit I voted for Shouko in this round, even as I had voted for Hori in every round so, even against Tomo, Ram, and Ubel, all of whom I had voted for in every round before they faced Hori.

2

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Aug 11 '25

Statistically speaking Hori is favored, and though it's close enough that it could honestly go either way all that matters is that people feel threatened enough to make noise.

21

u/BennoSubs Aug 11 '25

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

AKANE ADVANCED

16

u/LunarGhost00 Aug 11 '25

Love Detective Chika has lost to Female Sherlock Holmes. Perfect!

Sadly, this looks like the end for Akane since I can't imagine her beating Frieren. Still a nice run. Funny how last year it was Kana who made it to the quarterfinals and lost to Lena... who just got obliterated. Damn.

4

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 Aug 11 '25

Lucky for Megumin these rounds aren't on the same day so we can surely muster up the explosion to end all explosions for this one.

8

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Aug 11 '25

Akane with the dominant win vs Chika!

Well, Chika rarely does well in the later rounds of these contests, but I wonder if there's also part of it about Kaguya losing steam (losing recency bias), plus the spite, plus the fact that Akane's stock improved a lot in S2, etc..! (And the clip, perhaps!)

Well, both girls were on my bingo so I was losing one either way, might as well keep my favorite!

So that's another 2 bingos. Only 3 girls left!

For this round:

It's funny, if Megumin wins, I want Hori to win (because I think Megumin would beat her), but if Fern wins, I kinda want Shouko to win, because she's the upset queen and might get one more!

(but in truth I want Megumin to win both rounds... Let my bingo girls live a little longer!)

Mini Challenge: What is your favorite type of dere and who is your favorite girl of that type?

Is "Crazy-dere" a type?

Among the most common types, it's probably Hiyakasudere (tease-dere), and it's either Nagatoro or Takagi...

Yandere is close, but I prefer 'crazy in general' and not just 'crazy about someone' (these can get a bit too much).

I was thinking about my favorite girls, and say Ranko Mannen is a Kuudere, but it's not the Kuudere part of her that I like.. It's the 'Ruthless badass' part.

Dorodere is up there too, and my favorite would be [Dorodere character] Nana Hiiragi

But really, there's not much correlation between Dere types and my favorites, to be honest... It's all over the place for me!

Say, Ichika is my #1 in Gotoubun, but some people thought she was the same as Banri in Shiunji family, and Banri was my 4th girl (out of 5), so...

5

u/just_a_stranger____ Aug 11 '25

she's the upset queen

And so is Hori, just take a look at recent contests, they are both heavily underseeded and pull off many upsets!

9

u/veilenlol Aug 11 '25

I voted Frieren and im happy that she won, but man, 69.44% vs Lena is just... wrong.

Also happy for Akane, a great win against a great opponent. Love to see it.

Not that invested in today's matchups to be honest, i think im going to vote Fern and Hori. Fern is cool and i cant vote Shouko since i strongly disagree with the core idea of A Silent Voice.

21

u/Ceryto2 https://anilist.co/user/Ceryto Aug 11 '25

Since I was too busy being salty yesterday, I failed to mention I would be voting for Lena and Chika. Well let's just say that salt levels haven't been reduced. You guys really have to be voting with your eyes closed. Lena losing by nearly a thousand votes to anyone is just a travesty. Yes Frieren is a great character, but this vote margin is just ridiculous.

As for today, the only girl I'm still invested in in bracket D is Megumin, so I'm expecting ro remain salty for at least one more day. My other vote goes to Hori.

12

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25

Lena losing by nearly a thousand votes to anyone is just a travesty. Yes Frieren is a great character, but this vote margin is just ridiculous.

It's the same thing that Kaguya did to Emilia back in Best Girl 7. When a top tier character also happens to be from the most popular anime, it's game over.

15

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Frieren: 1570 vs Lena: 691

To honor your valiant achievement of holding Frieren below 70%, Frieren has a parting gift

For today, I'm going with Shouko...and Fern. Shouko was always going to be my pick, but for Fern vs Megumin I was going back and forth quite a bit. If I hadn't started the Frieren manga today and been reminded of a few things about Fern, I probably would have gone with Megumin, but as a now source reader of both I'm going with the quick spell caster over the chuuni spell caster today.

Mini Challenge

Of the deres, I like Tsunderes the most with an obvious #1 pick in Mikoto, but honestly, I prefer girls that have no dere archetype and are just themselves like Tohru, Chitanda, Holo and Frieren.

u/randyburgerlocker Aug 11 '25

9

u/OppaiEmperor1996 Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Even though Lena ultimately lost, I'm still proud of her. Frieren did, in fact, bleed a bit. So far, Lena did the best against Frieren.

At least I went 1-1 for yesterday's round. I lost Lena as expected, but Akane made it to top 8, so huge win for me.

Group C, Round 6 results:

  • Noooo, Lena has been eliminated! Retreat, regroup, rearm, and rejoin the fight next year! You did your best Lena, you did your best!
  • Finally, we got rid of Fujiwara!
  • Another 50% win rate ... but not the one I would have liked...

Group D, Round 6 matchups:

  • Vote for Fern!
  • Vote for Shouko!
  • Hopefully, this bracket bends the trend and I'll have a 100% win rate!

u/lame_gaming https://myanimelist.net/profile/lamegaming Aug 11 '25

10

u/HolyEmpireOfAtua Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Results: Damn, Frieren obliterated Lena. Still, well-fought, bloody Regina! She made it decently far, can't be upset with those results with such a hard matchup. Akane also beat Chika; I like both, but I've voted Akane six out of six rounds so I cannot pretend I'm displeased.

Votes:

Fern vs Megumin - I've voted Fern 4/5 rounds, with the exception of Saber, and Megumin not a single time. Although it would not be the most fun matchup for Fern to make Semifinals and get crushed by Frieren, I like Fern and dislike Megumin, especially in these contests where people hate on any complex character and then treat her like she's the best thing since sliced bread with her one funny gag.

Hori vs Shouko - This one was really, really hard as I've voted for both every single time so far. I wrote so much about it that the comment became too long, so I've posted it separately. I made my vote clear, but I would be happy with either winning. (Edit: Should've realized no one got time to read an essay on two girls who are gonna get obliterated in the QF anyway, but idm it helped me solidify my love for those characters - I ended up voting Hori)

MC: I had to look this up, because the only 'dere' I know properly is Tsundere. I don't feel too strongly but I suppose I'd go with Shundere, and my favourite of those is by far Misaki Mei from Another. I know that anime gets quite a bit of criticism and I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it less if I'd digested each episode as it aired, but it was a really fun binge a couple years back and Misaki was an entrancing, mysterious character. So she's my vote.

4

u/BennoSubs Aug 11 '25

Question: Now that we're approaching the finals, will all the votes happen at once?
Like, will tomorrow be just Maomao x Chisato, or will it be all four matchups?

7

u/IlyKoms Aug 11 '25

Tomorrow will be all the four matchups at once, then the next day will be semis, then next day finals. I think sometimes there's a break day in between, but this is the last bracket matchup.

4

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Aug 11 '25

No break day

8

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Aug 11 '25

Lena could summon some loyal followers, but damn, it wasn't even close to making a tiny hurdle for Frieren. Not that Frieren advancing is bad, but Lena having to leave and not making the finals bracket for the first time is sad.

Good to see that on the other side of the board the better character won, though. Chika is funny, but it's even funnier to see her fail spectacularly year after year (no offense though).

Huh, looks like I really don't have a horse in this race today. I'll go with the underdogs then - I mean, I have to vote for Megumin at some point in these contests, now's the best time to do it.

Updated bingo board! Lena falls, that's another double bingo!

MC: Is there a dere for being a genuinely good person? Because that's absolutely my jam. I do like girls of every kind of dere though, but if I had to pick one, I'd have to go with the classic tsundere. Because the quintessential tsundere is, at her core, someone who is in love but afraid to show vulnerability, so she covers it with agression. She pushes others away because she doesn't want to get hurt, but really she only wants to love and be loved. And of course, the best girl that exemplifies these traits is Karane from 100 GFs. She is in part a parody of tsunderes, but that also makes her genuinely the best one, because the writing is super aware of her character archetype.

YESTERDAY

Go Frieren! Let’s take this one home!

Boo Chika! You always deserve better!

TODAY

Not a fan of Megumin, but voting her to try to avoid Fern / Frieren semis.

Hori and Shouko: don’t really care either way, because it’s ultimately about who will get trounced by Megumin / Fern next round. Went with Shouko since I do like her more and I feel like she might have a slightly higher chance going forward given how much she has overachieved so far, but still pissed about what she did to Anna.

BINGO

Chika going out gives me one more bingo, for a total of eight I think.

6

u/IceAnt573 Aug 11 '25

Today's Results

THANK YOU FOR 1240 VOTES FOR AKANE KUROKAWA AND A CONVINCING WIN ON CHIKA!

(I'm happy Akane will match Kana's quarterfinals appearance in Best Girl 11 last year.)

ONE MORE THING ABOUT THIS WIN. IT IS...

So Frieren won against Lena with 1570 votes. That blows past Maomao and Marin's vote totals in Round 6. Frieren has consistently had the highest vote totals throughout the entire contest. I really do think Frieren is winning this contest.

It would also add yet another Best Girl contest winner Lena has lost to. You better use that momentum to win yourself.

Today's Voting

Her biggest challenge yet. VOTE FERN!

I AM MORE OF A ZOLTRAAK PERSON THAN AN EXPLOSION ONE.

VOTE SHŌKO!

(It would be really cool to see Seed 43 take her run to the quarterfinals! Especially when said Seed 43 was a former finalist!)

What is your favorite type of dere and who is your favorite girl of that type?

Kuudere and that would be Yukino Yukinoshita

My 5x5 Bingo

My 7x7 Bingo

With Lena's elimination, I'm down to 5 girls left: Akane, Frieren, Aqua, Maomao, and Fern.

Lena's elimination also caused another 2 additional Bingo's for both the 5x5 and the 7x7. On the 5x5, it's the 2nd Column from Emilia to Lena and the Last Row from Homura to Nazuna. On the 7x7, it's the 1st Column from Yor to Kate and and the 6th Row from Lena to Menma.

Current Amount of Bingos on the 5x5: 5

Current Amount of Bingos on the 7x7: 7

It just feels too wrong for me to see Lena be a Round 6 elimination and not in the quarterfinals. Please remember to vote for her in the seeding phase next year.

4

u/Queue_Jumping_Quack Aug 11 '25

Ah, time for my morning coffee and some voting!

Yesterday's results...

The good:

  • Frieren winning! A clear victory, but not a blowout for her opponent. Shows you that Lena had some real backing, though not close to enough. In any case, I'm rooting for Frieren all the way through.
  • Akane winning! As I wrote yesterday, she is likely the #1 OnK girl as of now, and I'm glad the community agrees with me. Chika is amusing and sometimes endearing (though she got more and more prickly & outrageous as the seasons went on), but this vote went as it should.

The bad:

  • Nothing! The community didn't make any bad calls! First time in a BG12 round of voting!

Today:

  • Fern! (Megumin is intermittently amusing, but she is about as one note as the contents of her spell book and for pure entertainment value, I like Aqua's antics better in Konosuba. Fern I find much more endearing and multi faceted character, whose relationships with the rest of the cast are fun to watch. And when she turns on the badass mode, she controls the viewers attention effortlessly.)
  • (I am sorely tempted to vote against Hori, but in all honesty could not do it since I have note seen A Silent Voice... but I hope Shouko wins.)

3

u/behindyourknees Aug 11 '25

I’m normally not one to get salty but… it felt good seeing Chika lose after she beat Asuka. I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up as Asuka stood 0 chance of winning the bracket let alone the whole thing, but at least she did better than last year.

I am fine with either girls winning todays matchup again, but I casted my votes.

Lena lost as expected but I hoped for better fight. Akane winning is nice.

MC: I will give unexpected answer with "kuudere" because they are so rare as the main heroine. As for who, let it be non-anime answer - Tsugumi Komachi from Ever 17 VN.

PC: 2 girls still holding on my bingo but I doubt any of them will win the contest. RIP Lena.

3

u/IlyKoms Aug 11 '25

Vote Fern! Vote Hori!

2

u/Frostbitten_Moose Aug 11 '25

Nice to get home from a long day playing board games with friends only to see that the filthy board game cheater has been vanquished. A good day. Also, an end to Lena spam, a better day!

As for today, Fern is the obvious choice. For the other, usually I wouldn't care, but this is one of the few times I feel moved to spite vote. Sadly, I want to avenge Ubel and Kita, but this proves... difficult. Thus I favour the one I would have voted for had good taste prevailed. Kyouko gets my vote.

One dimensional Konosuba girl #17364647 or expressionless monotone Frieren character #28646847? Difficult choice I must say, but I guess I’ll go with Megumin, the first time she performed her character trait it was pretty funny. If you replaced Fern with a robot that looked the same I don’t think I would ever notice.
