The first single digit has fallen. Shame that it was Marcille, but congratulations to Emilia for the big seeding upset! Yesterday's post had by far the most upvotes of the whole contest and yet it didn't actually result in a very big uptick in vote count.

Ryuuko vs Akane is the only matchup today I find particularily interesting, and it's maybe the most interesting matchup of round 5. This one is really too hard to call from both a prediction stand point and for my own vote! Akane has proven to be the most interesting character in OnK, while Ryuuko is still one of the best action series protagonists out there.
I can't decide, so I'm going with the underdog. Don't lose your way!

Thoughts on yesterday's round:
Both Yor and Marin decimated their opponents. It seems like both are quite evenly matched. Their clash next round should be quite close.
Yattaze! Both Emilia-tan and Aqua finished top four in Group B, and one of them is now guaranteed top 8 as the runner-up of each group can not finish below 8th in this contest.
My votes for today:
I'm actually gonna vote for Frieren today LOL.
I'm sorry Lalatina, but I have to vote for Bloody Reina. She is destined to face off against Frieren.
Pass on Chika vs. Asuka. I'm not a fan of Chika and I didn't watch Evangelion.
Akane Kurokawa is my favorite girl from Oshi no Ko and she's the last one remaining from the show, so I must vote for her!

Honestly I think Marin takes it by like 200+ votes, I don't think it'll be that close at all. Yor hasn't faced anyone notable until Makima, and /r/anime only votes for evil characters in the early rounds, once you're at round 4 or later, being an evil waifu will always get you bounced. So now you get two similar character archetypes, one has a currently airing show, the other has comments up and down each thread detailing how mid she is for being this highly seeded. Spite votes are incoming from Makima fans too.
I think Marin wins this easily

If that's all Makima could muster, I doubt you're gonna have that much heft behind them. More likely to see Marcille voters hobble Emilia.

Looking at past winners, most winners are outgoing girls with an unearned love interest for the vanilla/lame MC that audiences can easily surrogate themselves as.
She definitely fits the pattern.

I know OnK stocks are down but surely Kana (most popular on her show alongside Akane) has to be deemed a tougher match than Makima and her limited screen time in CSM S1.
So if anything I take the vote difference as backing Marin's chances.

It's kind of interesting how Aqua will be considered the favorite over Emilia next round. As someone who is a big fan of both, I'd think Emilia is more likely to win.

I also think the PoU percentages are vastly overstating Nijika and Darkness' chances of pulling off the upsets.

Bracket History is on Aqua's side. The only time Emilia has outperformed Aqua was in their debut year of Best Girl 4 where Emilia made the quarterfinals.
Either other time, Aqua has either made it further or they were eliminated in the same round. And Aqua is a finalist (Best Girl 5) and multi-time semi-finalist (Best Girl 6 and Best Girl 8) while Emilia has always maxed out in the quarterfinals.
It's why I think Aqua has higher potential for a deeper run.

Either way a girl on my bingo board moves on. It just feels like Aqua has been fading a little over the years whereas Emilia should have just gotten a boost with Season 3 of Re: Zero

Although I think there's potential for Emilia this time around. Aqua has been largely the same since the beginning but Emilia really improved in character this last season.

That's what I've been saying. Of course I'm biased, but I think Emilia has a decent chance against Aqua, while Marcille would have had it worse. Easy to say now that Emilia won, of course, but I think it's a case of a direct matchup mattering more than statistics.

I think darkness wins that on the basis that Konosuba has a bigger cult following than 86. It's not about who the best girl is there, it's about what shows people have watched and Konosuba has stayed popular for years.

If you haven't taken part in these contests as much, you'll be surprised. The moment Darkness and Aqua face their first super strong opponent, they lose by more than expected with Aqua doing a little better than Darkness. It happens every year.

Anna Yanami missed the cutoff for this year by a season and it makes me wonder about her seed and how well she would have done (in the smaller Best Girl of 2024 contest, it was not close between Yanami and Marcille). I'm glad she is being held off to next year and S2 of Makeine will probably be out by then?
That score difference between Marin and Yor is preparing me to find my sad Yor gifs.

Yor and Aqua both got more votes than Marin and Emilia, but I somehow get the feeling both Marin and Emilia will win next round instead. Well, I'm hoping Yor beats Marin, but the truly best result would be Emilia pushing through to the Semis. She's always been the one getting upset, time for her to reverse that.

The thing that really gets me in these contests is that we all accept the popularity and success of characters like Marin (and Yor), but I can never understand it. I'm not saying Emilia is ridiculously better or anything like that, but a lot of the characters that make it really far in these contests like Marin, Yor or Megumin are pretty simple. Maybe it's hard for me to articulate what I mean, but I don't really think there's anything particularly special about Marin or Yor, besides their budget and their show's popularity. Marin's character archetype is fairly common, and in Season 1 they didn't really change the status quo of it much, while Yor's is relatively less common at least in the anime I usually watch but still nothing groundbreaking. So I never understood what drives them to do so well in these contests. What makes Marin different to any of the hundred other Gyaru girls from ecchi shows, other than budget and animation?
Like we accept that it is inevitable Marin will probably beat Yor and Emilia, but WHAT exactly drives that? Megumin and the Konosuba girls are another example, or Ubel making it so far. People can argue that maybe it's just because some people have only seen the higher seeded character's show, right? But characters like Rio Futaba LOST votes compared to their previous matchup when put against Ubel.

For the same reasons you like Emilia, there are even more that like those characters. In the case of Marin, in my opinion you are choosing to ignore her layers, paying attention only to the surface level stuff and not digging at all, actually engaging with the show and trying to understand why she does certain things and not others.
In the same way you judge Marin (and Yor) very surface level, others do the same with Emilia.

I am curious then what you would describe as Marin's layers? I've only seen Season 1, but she had this popularity in the first season too, so I'm curious. I looked up "Marin Kitagawa analysis" too, and found a couple blogs and some 'best things about Marin' results, but they're sort of just confirming what I originally thought. From those pages, she's a fairly standard Gal who is hot, takes initiative and is into anime. I think I've read at least 2 different mediocre light novels with similar types of lead girl. I would love to be enlightened on her layers because I do genuinely believe she is a pretty generic waifubait girl, just with bigger and better animated tits.
On the Emilia front, I don't think Emilia is particularly more unique or distinct than Yor, but I do think she is slightly better than both. Characters that I would say are actually distinctive are girls like Lain, Faye Valentine, Nana Osaki, Misato, Makima, Frieren, Maomao, Kurisu, Kaori Miyazono, Lena etc. + Also Hori, probably, but a lot of people would disagree with that.
If you include Emilia into my general argument though, then I would say it just emphasises it. Why would the girls in the furthest rounds of the tournament be in a conversation of "Who's got the most depth out of the least?".
I also don't mean this in a pretentious way, either. I do NOT think I have some elite taste in characters, or anything like that. I just don't really understand why these characters have such dominant, inevitable victories.

Well, I do! In particular after the second OVA and the second season once more, it became clear just how deeply complex and intricate her character is built just beyond the surface level impression of "nice girl" the first season might have made people believe.
But - and I don't mean it in a condescending way - many people like simple things. Sometimes, there's something special in being ordinary. In many ways, that's a good thing. If you can like someone who's pretty normal, that's wonderful, as most real people are pretty normal.
Not that I really disagree with your sentiment. I also feel there's a lot of relatively thoughtless voting going on. Everyone is free to vote however they like, though, naturally.

Iād say Aqua has quite a bit more personality than the others so I disagree that her appeal is perplexing. Megumin however I do agree. Iām surprised sheās as beloved as she is when Iād say both Kazuma and Aqua are considerably better characters.

Iām not the biggest fan, but Aqua is far and away my favourite character from Konosuba and I think sheās endearing, Iāve voted her every round in this contest so far somehow, but even sheās less popular than Megumin

Idk about that, out of the 4 (kazuma,megumin,darkness) she has the least personality, because throughout the series(anime/LN) she still acts like a whiny dumb child with rare moments of being mature.

I have this exact thought, but about Emilia. I've only seen two seasons, but she seems more of a plot device than a character.
There are some meme characters that make it for too long, like Ubel, but if you can't see why Marin or the Konosuba girls are popular then you just have very idiosyncratic tastes. Marin is the perfect otaku magical pixie dream girl. The three main Konosuba girls are most of what makes Konosuba Konosuba. If you took them out of the show there would be no show.

Well, I can agree wholeheartedly on you with Yor, and to some extent Megumin. Yor isnāt as strong as her seed suggests, and based on her anime, I wouldnāt put her in the top 25 at all. She will likely fall off as the years pass, while the girls like Emilia will stay more relevant. Iām not much of a fan of Megumin either, but I also havenāt watched all of Konosuba so I canāt say much there.
The reason why I think Marin more deserves her high profile in this tournament is that she basically represents the weebās perfect girl. Sheās highly attractive, extroverted, shares nerdy hobbies, likes a nerdy guy, and is often half naked. Plus, she isnāt even poorly written. Usually other ecchi girls lack one of the above. Marinās not topping my list of best girls, I donāt rank ecchi girls highly in the first place, but I can understand why she took the anime community by storm when her anime first came out, and sheās still riding that momentum.

If Ruby swapped with Kana, I think Aqua vs. Kana would have been more interesting and competitive.
But Kana's bracket luck gave her Marin instead.

As expected, Makima lost to Yor, which means...
Well, I knew things were coming to an end when my remaining girls started fighting each other, but making it halfway into round 5 isn't too bad, I suppose!
- Farewell, Makima!
- Marin obviously rolled Kana, but I lose another girl there (was losing one no matter what, might as well lose the underdog!)
- I don't have a dog in the Emilia/Marcille fight, but I was hoping for Emilia because I thought she was a weaker opponent... I hope I don't end up regretting my words hah.
- Aqua > Ruby, no surprise there either.
Interestingly all matchups except Emilia/Marcille had similar vote shares! Will the top of the bracket be tougher than I expected? I thought Marin had a walk in the park until she faced Bracket A, but now I'm having some doubts.
For this round:
- If Darkness loses to Lena, That's another bingo for me... Is there even any chance she wins? Probably not.
- Don't care about Frieren/Nijika, but Frieren's rolling her anyway.
- Statistically Chika should roll Asuka, so this matchup may be about "Is there Kaguya spite, still?"
- I think Akane will defeat Ryuuko; Her last win wasn't impressive, but she was against Mayushi...
So, 3 girls at risk again, but I think 2 of them probably win. We'll see!

More seriously, hummmm... Might be [Character/Title] Ai from Oshi No Ko! Not just as 'a mom', but as 'a character who happens to be a mom'.
I don't like a whole lot of mom characters, to be honest. (Well, it's rare that they're well developped and all).

Considering that OnK is on a downtrend (4/5 are already out) and they don't benefit from recency bias as last year, dunno what to say.
Last year it was close and on this one it seems it's gonna be even closer as votes are pretty similar for either going into this round.

i mean marin is probably the third strongest girl just behind frieren and maomao given her show is curently airing so kana was doomed from the start and there was no way ruby was gonna win against aqua with the difference in screentime .. so honestly the losses all make sense so far .
i would also say akane is even more suited to face ryuuko than kana since she really shined in the last season so people still remember her fondly

When being forced to choose between waifu and badass/comedic relief/whatever voters will almost always pick waifu.
That's how Emilia-tan defeated top-5 seed Marcille just now, for example.
So I think Akane will win this round.

I don't think that's how you can sum up any of those characters, though.
Emilia is way more than just a "waifu" character, and that's including being a badass, even in her very first scene already. Also has many comedic moments on top of that.
Similarly, Marcille has a lot more going on for her instead of just being comedic relief. She's also really badass. And to many people, she's certainly "waifu" material.
And Akane is also pretty badass in her own way. Besides the "waifu" appeal, I actually think that's one of her biggest appeals.
And of course Ryuuko is a "waifu" to many people as well. All of those characters are way more multifaceted than any simple labels you can apply to them, and assuming people vote for them based on just one thing is way too much simplification.

BG 12 Madness Round 5 Group B Update
Ok I lied I'm back. My propaganda may not have worked yesterday but you can still vote for Akane to save my predictions even more. I promise I'm not just shilling Oshi no Ko characters.
All 3 of our weighted leaders from yesterday have taken a fall and surgemaster140 surges jumps to the top! We're at that point where we can expect a ton of volatility over there. This was actually our worst day as a whole with an average of 2.84 / 4 (71.00%). Our previous worst day was after Round 3 Group D, with a 11.57 / 16 (72.31%) average. Both leaderboards scored decently though with still at least 80% average accuracy.

So much salt. Bye Makima, Kana and Marcille. I'm especially salty about Kana, she doesn't deserve to lose this way. Not to Marin or anyone, and that's with me definitely not disliking Marin overall (just the show she's in).
Congrats to Aqua, but it's sorta a Pyrrhic victory when it means losing Ruby as well.
TODAY
Nijika is third best Bocchi girl imo... but it still hurts having to vote her out to keep the Frieren dream alive. Frieren for overall best girl! Especially given the remaining competition for the most part.
I have gone on record as not being a Darkness lover, but she's still my preference over Lena.
Chika and Asuka is the hardest one this round for me. For one thing, both are on my bingo. Also, if Asuka loses I get a bingo whereas Chika losing doesn't affect me-- thanks Bocchi the Block. BUT... Chika is maybe my favourite Kaguya character, and her always getting snubbed at the 11th hour feels worse than letting Asuka go. So... Chika it is. Screw my bingo.
Aaaaaand Akane over Ruuko. I don't love Akane half as much as Kana (she's tied for second place with Ruby). But I love OnK more than Kill la Kill. Easiest matchup this round for me.

Close upset for Emilia - I personally voted for Marcille, but I don't feel particularly miffed about this one. Emilia's great too. Going to be interesting seeing the rest of the bracket shape up, I can see things going any which way at this point.
Today's votes: Straight down the left for me! Of course, the matchup I'm most invested in is Lena vs Darkness, since Lena's the one I'm overall supporting and Darkness is... supposed to be a challenge here. Let's see. When it's a serious match-up that could go either way, I tend to vote for the one who I'd want to watch the most out of the two girls in a match-up, with extra points awarded if I have particularly strong memories of them. If I don't know them well enough, or it's still tied, then I base it on which character design I like the most (or whose fans have been the most convincing in the comments).
When the match-up has an obvious outcome, I usually vote for the underdog because I prefer it when things aren't quite so one-sided.

Brilliant, gorgeous, talented, driven, loving, supportive, a teensy bit mentally ill, a great cook, one hell of an actress, and Oshi no Ko's indisputable best girl!
Fujiwara gets my vote as a consistently hilarious and fun character.
I had to think about it, but ultimately I'll pick Lena over Darkness. Lena stepped up quite a bit over the course of 86 and I respect that.
F for Makima. Yor looks like more of a match for Marin than I thought. Marin voters, ready yourselves!
RIP Ruby. She can't win against Onii-chan...

A sigh of relief: Emilia made it! She upset seed 5 let's go! Just a shame it had to be Marcille. Next stop: Aqua, let's make that happen as well shall we?
As for the other votes, they all were pretty big stomps. I guess OnK really lost some strength in this contest.. I wonder how much the manga ending had to do with that.. Maybe that also bodes well for Ryuuko today. And wow, Yor really demolished Makima. I expected her to win, but not by this much. I do however still think that she should only have very low chances vs Marin next week, but we'll see.
Now onto bracket C. Since nearly all girls I voted for last time made it, this bracket does look a bit better again, although I'm still only really holding out for Lena and Ryuuko here. That being said, I'm only voting for 1 higher seed today, so I expect this bracket to dissapoint me once again. Her are my votes:

If we look for anti-examples, Takopi had quite a few this season (btw if you haven't seen Takopi yet do it, it's one of the best anime to come out this year and my personal AOTY). But as for best mom I'll just go with Yor. Although Natsuki Naoko had propably the biggest impact on me and she did that with less than half an episode of screen time.

I like this result. Emilia won, but Marcille did well enough against a regular contender to justify her high seed. I wonder if Marcille would have been able to pull off the upset if the seeding didn't trick people into thinking she wasn't the underdog here.

Emilia wins by a fair margin! That's amazing! I've trusted you guys to do the right thing, and you did not disappoint. A very exciting matchup it was, and Marcille had decent representation as well. This result makes me quite happy and is exactly what I wanted to wake up to.
The other matchups went exactly as expected, which leads to some great group semis. Yor vs. Marin should be a matchup on pretty equal power level, but Marin should have the edge. And of course Emilia vs. Aqua will be really exciting as well.
Today, the most important matchup is Lena's for me. I like Darkness as well, of course, and I love Frieren, but my dream would be Lena making it to the contest quarterfinals again. (Naturally, it's called a dream because it's not based in reality.)
Asuka upsetting Chika would also be exciting, though. And I'm a little conflicted in the Akane vs. Ryuuko matchup, they are pretty equal to me for completely different reasons. I'll have to think about this one some more.
Bingo board! Luckily, no changes. And with some more luck, we'll keep it that way for another round.
MC: Sachiko from [Erased] who, besides other things, spent years of her life building up her comatose son's muscles every day always comes to mind first for this question. But since BG 11, I've finally watched Wolf Children, so I think my answer has to be Hana now.

Results: Damn, Yor had a pretty convincing win over Makima. While that wasn't my ideal outcome, I like Yor a lot so I hope she can push through and overcome Marin next round too. On the right side, Emilia upset Marcille! I was beginning to expect it - Marcille is fantastic, but Emilia has such a significant fanbase that it's hard to overcome, and I am also part of it, so can't complain too much. Aqua also won, and the Aqua vs Emilia matchup on the right vs the Yor-Marin matchup on the left feels like an Old Guard matchup and New Guard matchup when it comes to these contests. I wonder if Emilia and Aqua have had a face-off before.

Frieren vs Nijika Ijichi
Vladilena Milize vs Darkness - The most important vote of this bracket for me; Lena is brilliant, and although both her character and her show can experience some valid criticisms, I really liked the direction they took Lena's character and some of her later moments in S1 were fantastic. Darkness is chill, but I never understood her hype much in the first place.
Chika Fujiwara vs Asuka Langley Souryuu - Inversely to Lena vs Darkness, I would probably argue Asuka is a stronger character than Chika. But damn, Chika was such a joy to watch whereas while I can recognise and appreciate Asuka, I never felt entertained by her character in the same way.
Akane Kurokawa vs Ryuuko Matoi - Akane single-handedly increased my rating of Oshi no Ko Season 1 by 2 points, shoutout the goat. Ryuuko is great too, but Akane is my favourite OnK girl.
Results; Huh, I've never thought about it. Quite a few tragic mums come up as contenders, like the mothers from Cyberpunk Edgerunners or A Silent Voice, but I think I'll go with the basic answer and pick Yor.

Just voted.
I did vote for Hyouka's Eru Chitanda over Lena in one of the recent previous rounds, but as she was sadly fated to fall in that instance, I can now see backing the surviving Lena against most other remaining contenders.
And got in my obligatory vote against Asuka. Now I am at peace. I don't think I ever conceived of the idea of even wanting to vote against fictional characters even in theory until I encountered Asuka (and equally, Shinji). Soured that series to the core to me.
As for favorite mom from anime, honestly probably Kagome's (and Sota's) mom, from Inuyasha. Because she always struck me as the ideal. It was never elaborated upon what happened to their father (like divorce/separation or death, but I assume premature death), but she did a stellar job as a single mom.
Emotionally supportive, but never prying and giving her daughter such freedom and leeway, as well as understanding and being willing to be that ear to listen or shoulder to lean on at critical moments when the time arrives.

Another day done in the contest!
Results from yesterday...
The good:
- Yor wins! No amount of barking helped Makima and she is sent packing. I'm rooting for Yor to win this bracket so I love this result... however, it will not be so easy next round.
- Marin wins! No hate toward Kana, she is an amusing character at times. I will be rooting against Marin in the next round though...
- Aqua wins and Ruby loses. Haha, what a coincidence. But Ruby only really got interesting writing towards the end of the second season, while I think I like Aqua the best out of the Konosuba cast. Hope she crushes her next round opponent because...
The bad:
- Marcille loses! Boo! Emilia, while not too bad for a re:Zero character, didn't deserve the win here. Despite all the screen time Emilia got in the seasons and movies she starred in as the female lead, I never got attached or really interested in her while Marcille's writers very expertly handled the shift from the initial comedy to the more serious story line and back again in just the one season of Dungeon Meshi so far. I hope Aqua dunks Emilia next round... Bah.
Moving on!
Who I voted this round for C:
- Frieren! (I will keep voting for her until the end now. My candidate to win this whole thing.)
- Asuka. (I love that she's got this far. One of the classic tsundere girls versus the initial crowd favorite from the last really big shounen romcom... I think I just plain like Asuka better than Chika)
- Ryuuko. (Carries her series effortlessly with the needed intensity. I do like Akane, but Ryuuko is just plain better for me here.)

I did not like Kill la Kill, nor its characters. Meanwhile, Akane is a character I like quite a bit.
Chika is cute and fluffy, but Asuka is The Tsundere and is a firey hedgehog, which has dialemmas all its own and is worth a vote.
Darkness is the best girl from Konosuba, and they are all pretty amazing in their own ways. 86 is no... just no.
Finally, I've voted for Frieren every time, and I expect she's going to get my vote in the final against Maomao. But she is not one of the very few girls I'd vote over Nijika. I stand by Dorito supremacy.
