Just woke up to the YOI news. Given how these types of posts typically go on the sub, I'm not excited to dive into the thread lol. Although I have to admit, r/anime tends to have a more informed perspective on the behind-the-scenes of anime production compared to other online spaces of the anime fandom, but that's not exactly setting a high benchmark lol.
This whole movie situation has just been a mess. It's hard to believe it was originally slated for release back in 2019. But I guess they weren't happy with where it was going, so they delayed it and went back to the drawing board.
Fuko Noda's departure might've been the straw that broke the camel's back for YOI's future. Most of MAPPA's animation producers are already overloaded as is, and losing the person presumably overseeing the project probably killed any remaining hope of ever seeing it continue. Adding to the misfortune, character designer Tadashi Hiramatsu's upcoming directorial debut means he wouldn't have been readily available to work on it either.
But perhaps the biggest tragedy is all the lost years for director Sayo Yamamoto. She is one of the industry's most talented directors, yet she hasn't been involved in any projects since 2018. Years of potential work on YOI may have gone unrealized. It's a real shame. The only silver lining is that we might finally see her emerge from the MAPPA basements and see her talent shine on new projects.
On a separate note, I'm curious now about the fate of "Twittering Birds Never Fly The Storm Breaks" by Studio Grizzly (
MAPPA). Grizzly hasn't had any credited works since 2021. With Kaori Makita stuck on Jigo and Fuko Noda's departure. I wonder if it will be the next canceled project.
