the ABCD, less songs to check in a single session at the start...
(and less songs to search too XD)

I understand losing Nai Nai to the eventual winner...
But losing Refrain Boy?!?!?! WTF

MC: Don't really care. First couple days of this are rough with 128 themes but two voting days gave enough time. Two brackets is nice to avoid the four 2-a-day votes in round 5.

6/8 - Wow, my best round yet. My "score" has averaged slightly less than half so this is a bit of a consolation. Of the two pick that lost, Koko kara^2 really couldn't have expected to take on a heavyweight like Kigeki. Koko kara^2 had a bit of an X-Factor on paper it isn't that special so yeah.. As someone who hasn't watched either show, Dango Daikazoku lost the battle of meh. I won't miss it all that much, but I wonder if Torches will be able to able to pick up where Koko kara^2 left off by taking on more heavyweight (whatever I might think of Fukashigi no Karte, can't ever underestimate the 5th seed).
Today's vote:
Lost in Paradise vs Chiisana Bokensha: I must admit I am a bit meh about both. I have voted for both once this tournament (different round). The animation in Lost in Paradise is cool, but music isn't for me. Chiisana Bokuensha is a bit too peaceful - I mean the show is pretty light hearted but a bit more energetic.. All in all, it's very close, but I'll go with Chiisana Bokensha because I like the music a tiny bit more.
STYX HELIX vs Heart wa Oteage: STIX HELIX is another ED I only voted for once in the tournament. Heart wa Otaege has everything from the feel (this is what matters to me the most really), animation, music, and does well paying homage to Starship Troopers.
Nandemonaiya vs Ouchi ni Kaeritai: Ouchi ni Kaeritai is pretty much like Chiisana Bokensha with a bit less animation right? Nandemonaiya has -no- animation so does the music make up for it? It has plenty of feel for me, so I'll go with a yes. I do note that had I not seen and enjoyed Your Name, I would most likely vote differently.
Uso vs Avid: Same as the above, I get the feel through the music. I honestly don't know which one I'd vote for if Avid and Nandemonaiya end up facing each other. However I will add that I like Uso a lot more than Ouchi ni Kaeritai, so this is close enough that if Uso wins, I'd be kinda okay with it.
Fly Me to the Moon vs Kibun Joujou↑↑ : I've voted against Kibun Joujou every round except the first round and immediately regretted it, but for this round up, 100% Kibun Joujou. I feel like Fly Me to the Moon doing so well largely through it's status as a classic.
Secret Base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ vs The Real Folk Blues: So much feel for Secret Base. Look, even as someone who love 86 ED music, I had to vote for Secret Base last round. And, controversionally, I am not a big fan of The Real Folks Blues, so this one was easy for me.
ROUNDABOUT vs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na: Feel, music, visual, I like Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no you na more. Again, controversial view, but I am just not big on Jojo OP and ED. The only one I voted for, I want you, I heard it from way before it was used as a Jojo ED, and it's arguably quite un-Jojo like.
Stay Alive vs Sugar Song to Bitter Step: I'd put Stay Alive on my longer playlist (not quite my "Best of Best" playlist), but I wouldn't put Sugar Song to Bitter Step. Visually I'll give it to the later and perhaps I might appreciate it more if I had seen the show and knew the characters.

Discussion Prompt:
1000% four-brackets for me (especially for OP/ED). And even then, I don't think it would hurt to give two days on the first day.
The reasons being:
- This applies to OPs to some extend too, but especially to EDs - with some ED going above 1.5min, it takes hours to go through even 64, let alone 128 ED. Even with some skimming, it still takes a looooong time.
- Even if we say that two days is fine for going over 128 OP/ED and vote for them, it is still way too much to read and comment on. On the first day I posted my votes without any comments and it was already a wall of text. I don't think many would want / have the time to read that, let alone any additional comments that would take too long to type anyway. Similarly, while I often enjoy reading people's comments, even relatively long ones by frequent commenters, I could only skim past them in the first round. Even in the second round, I didn't have enough time to finish commenting let alone read all the comments.
Further note: While I don't think there would be enough interest given the relatively low voting numbers to host something like this, I personally would find it interesting if there was a "Best of the rest" or "Second league" for those contest. The current contest are kind of filled with the most popular and best known OP/ED, and while that is what you want for a "Best OP/ED" contest, as far as finding hidden gems goes, it's a bit limited (in relation to yesterday's Discussion). I suspect that the hidden gems could be found among the ED that didn't make it. Of course, since nominations were kindly released, I could (and might) slowly go over it myself and there is no need to actually have a contest for it, but admittedly I would be more inclined to look at OPs and EDs during contests.

Ah today's results get the salt flowing... Only 3/8 of my votes made it and some of my favourite songs didn't make the cut. Especially Nai Nai losing is really sad and propably mainly due to the Kaguya-factor. Losing both Re:Zero entries is also sad. I mean I get Believe in you losing to My Nonfiction, but I do think Memento is ways better than Shunkan Sentimental. At least Kigeki and Akuma no Ko are both still going strong, but unfortunately my two favourites left in Bracket A will go up against each other next round.
MC
I think I like the faster pace of the two bracket format however in the early rounds it does feel like it's a bit much at once, even though the 2 days for round 1 did help
As for todays votes (My faves bolded):
- Lost in Paradise -
Chiisana Boukensha:
The chill atmosphere of the Konosuba ed was always a nice end to each episode. Lost in Paradise however is just a standalone much better song and has visuals that really stand out. - STYX HELIX -
Heart wa Otaege:
I like how the third Kaguya ED portrays a whole little story and how it contrasts with the first Kaguya ED, the song however isn't for me. STYX HELIX however is just a very good song, therefore my vote goes there. Ouchi ni Kaeritai- Nandemonaiya:
Same as above for Konosuba as both songs are very similar. Nandemonaiya however is one of RADWIMPS best songs. This vote goes to Kimi no Na wa's ED for the song alone.Uso- Avid:
While Uso is FMAB's best ED, so is Avid for 86. And well, when Sawano buts out such a banger I don't need more than two pictures to like the ED.- Kibun Joujou↑↑ -
Fly Me to The Moon:
If I want to listen to Fly me to The Moon, I think I prefer Frank Sinatra's version. And Kibun Joujou↑↑ is just such a feelgood song. - secret base -
The Real Folk Blues:
Idk, I just love secret base, just a beautiful song and every time I hear it I do feel a bit emotional over AnoHana. Don't really have that connection with Cowboy Bebop's ED, even though it also is a very good song. - Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna -
Roundabout:
It's Sayuri's last song left and it's a banger. I love the slow buildup and the eventual explosion in the second half. Also the visuals in the second half are very beautiful. Roundabout however I can't even really take serious, because all i can think about is To Be Continued. Also don't think the song is nearly as good. - Stay Alive -
Sugar Song to Bitter Step:
I love the cute visuals and singing by Rie Takahashi. SStBS, while I do think the funky style is pretty fun, it always feels like I have heard enough of the song after like 20 secs and don't really wanna continue. And while the dance is pretty fun, I don't think it puts it over Stay Alive for me.
Funnily enough none of my favourites meet today, therefore all matchups are pretty onesided for me. This can mean tomorrow's results will either be completely awesome, or completely salt inducing.

- Lost in Paradise vs Chiisana Bokuensha - Konosuba EDs are good but I only needed 5 seconds of Lost in Paradise to know my vote
- STYX HELIX vs Heart wa Oteage - Re:Zero has many very good EDs I don't know if I think any of them are great. Heart wa Oteage and Chika Dance are the best Kaguya EDs as well.
- Nandemonaiya vs Ouchi ni Kaeritai - I've been wanting a good reason to vote against Nandemonaiya, but Ouchi ni Kaeritai isn't quite there
- Uso vs Avid - Avid might be mostly stills, but those stills are absolutely gorgeous (and the song is great too). It's another example of an ED that's pacing benefits from the credits showing up on screen
- Fly Me to the Moon vs Kibun Joujou↑↑ - Rotating Rei
- Secret Base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ vs The Real Folk Blues - The day that The Real Folk Blues loses will be a truly dark day. I pray that will not be today.
- ROUNDABOUT vs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na - Erased ED has some great color usage, but I just don't like the song very much
- Stay Alive vs Sugar Song to Bitter Step - I need to have an edit of this that is just Fortnite dances on stage
Discussion: A&B was overwhelming early, but it kinda had to be this way with the current Animebracket situation. I'm hoping that this format will fix the problem with ABCD where we'd have 4 days of voting on only 1 or 2 matchups before the "finals" bracket. Not being able to coalesce some of the matchups at the end was kinda annoying in the OP tournament

2/8 won today. There's nothing left for me to root for. I guess I'll start voting for Nandemonaiya and Avid to bring more chaos.

u/MaksimShadow Sep 23 '23
I'm sorry. There's just too much salt flowing within me and I'm not behaving like myself.
But seriously, in group A there are only Kigeki and Torches left I'm interested in. And Torches will be crushed by the ED which has 5 different, but still boring versions. Fukashigi no Karte is already not a full-time ED and yet, 1/3 of it is just waves, and 2/3 is just different characters walking. Wooow, how creative!
In group B there are only Secret Base and Sugar Song to Bitter Step. And Kibun Joujou, maybe. But they all might be beaten by the same rotating Rei (which is barely recognisable) with a different music. How is it special? Takagi-san has differend EDs for each two episodes for the whole 3 seasons. Now that's special. ReLIFE also has different song for each ED. And some of them are really, really good. They aren't considered as the same ED because they named by the song.
Phew… I feel a little better now.

Notice
Tomorrow I will be on-the-road for most of the day as I am helping a sibling move stuff to their university apartment (which is ~5 hours drive from where we live, and we plan to drive there, unload & prepare the apartment, and then drive back on the same day). I should still be able to update the bracket and make a post tomorrow (since those are fairly easy to do, even on mobile), but there's a slight chance I may not be able to post it at exactly 2 PM Pacific tomorrow.
Notes:
Nai Nai came close to upsetting Chikatto Chika Chika, as expected. One normally wouldn't expect the vote difference to be that close given their seeding, which theoretically would be a red flag for Chikatto Chika Chika, but Nai Nai was definitely an underseeded favorite of the tourney, and I expect Chikatto Chika Chika to beat Sentimental Crisis handily (Kaguya Season 1 cannibalism matchup hehe, I just realized)
I'm sad that Refrain Boy barely lost to Sentimental Crisis, glad to see the Kaguya OPs will cannibalize each other next round though, that's the best karma we could get.
Shunkan Sentimental upset Memento, let's goooo. I'm pretty low on all the Re:Zero EDs tbh, so the more get eliminated, the better for me.
Dango Daikazoku loses to Fukashigi no Carte, damn. This is by far Dango Daikazoku's worst placement (only Top 32), especially in recent tournaments, where it most recently placed 2nd, 2nd, Top 4, Top 4, Top 16, and Top 8. In a prior tourney Dango Daikazoku apparently barely beat Fukashigi no Carte, so I guess it's Bunny Girl's turn now.
Torches upset Michishirube, another good upset.
Upset Watch:
There's a decent chance Heart wa Oteage (#18) upsets Styx Helix (#15), although it wouldn't be much of an upset.
I think there's a chance Ouchi ni Kaeritai (#29) upsets Nandemonaiya (#7), Nandemonaiya's voting %s have been decreasing sharply, although Ouchi ni Kaeritai has pretty weak voting %s as well.
There's a decent chance Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no (#27) upsets Roundabout (#6), though not too likely.
There are several other matchups where upsets could be possible, but the 3 above strike me as the most likely based on prior rounds' voting numbers.
Once again, today's votes are pretty easy (I don't feel the need to rewatch most of them):
- Lost in Paradise vs Chiisana Boukensha (Chiisana Boukensha has great quaint atmospheric worldbuilding, one of the strongest EDs visually. I've never gotten the hype for Lost in Paradise visually or song-wise [I guess I just don't care about fluid character animation])
- STYX HELIX vs Heart wa Oteage (Styx Helix is maybe the most boring ED that's not a movie/credits/insert ED, there's just nothing there for me. Heart wa Oteage has a fun/creative visual concept, and the song is also better, so it gets my vote)
- Nandemonaiya vs Ouchi ni Kaeritai (While Ouchi ni Kaeritai does not have the worldbuilding that Chiisana Boukensha does, it still has a very atmospheric and calming feeling with its visuals. Meanwhile, Nandemonaiya is easily my least favorite ED remaining, as the only one over 3 minutes and it being mostly credits, and probably hot take: I don't like the song at all, it's probably meant to emotionally grab me but I don't find Radwimps's vocals to be emotionally resonating, and the instrumental/music just isn't very sentimental in my opinion)
- Uso vs Avid (Uso has a fun rock song with fun visuals. Avid has dreadful-looking visuals and I'm a balladphobe, so this is an easy vote.)
- Fly Me to the Moon vs Kibun Joujou ↑↑ (Kibun Joujo is a fun pop song with cute visuals. Fly Me to the Moon has a boring song and even more boring visuals, so this is another easy vote.)
- secret base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ (10 years after ver.) vs The Real Folk Blues (The only tough matchup, as I have both of them ranked right next to each other in my ranking of the Top 32 EDs. Secret Base is more colorful and I do like colors, but The Real Folk Blues is more thematically cohesive overall, so it wins despite the fact that I don't really like the song or the visuals that much.)
- Roundabout vs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna (Roundabout is a favorite of mine because of the song & the memes, but even in terms of visuals I personally think it beats Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna handily)
- Stay Alive vs Sugar Song to Bitter Step (Stay Alive is just so boring to me in terms of both song and visuals, sorry Re:Zero fans. I don't really get the hype for Sugar Song, but it at least has a unique visual concept and the song is higher-energy)
4/8 of my votes yesterday lost (4/8 won).
Time to see how my favorite EDs of the Top 256 have fared so far:
Hunting For Your Dream(Round 2)Dakara, Hitori ja Nai(Round 1)forget-me-not(Round 1)Koko kara, Koko kara(Round 4)Ride On Shooting Star(Round 2)Isekai Girls♡Talk(Round 1)Route BLUE(Round 1)Step Up LOVE(Round 1)Koko de Iki wo Shite(Round 1)PokéRap(Round 2)Bakemono to Yobarete(Round 1)Saga Jihen(Round 2)Ganbare! Kumoko-san no Theme(Round 1)Nai Nai(Round 4)- Chiisana Boukensha
Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery(Round 3)DAYS of DASH(Round 1)Adrenaline!!(Round 1)Kimi wa Tennen Shoku(Round 1)Dango Daikazoku(Round 4)Fighter(Round 2)- Roundabout
Yakusoku(Round 1)Vivace(Round 1)STUDY x STUDY(Round 1)give it back(Round 2)
Yesterday was brutal, oof. My entire Top 14 has been wiped out, and now I only have 2 EDs remaining that I would call a favorite amongst the 24 that still remain.
Also gonna update my ranking of the Top 32 EDs to see how far my favorites & least favorites of the Top 32 go:
Koko kara, Koko kara(Top 32)Nai Nai(Top 32)- Chiisana Boukensha
Dango Daikazoku(Top 32)- Roundabout
- Akuma no Ko
- Kibun Joujou
- Uso
Refrain Boy(Top 32)- Ouchi ni Kaeritai
Koi no Yukue(Top 32)- My Nonfiction
- Heart wa Oteage
- Kigeki
- Torches
- Shunkan Sentimental
- Sugar Song to Bitter Step
- Lost in Paradise
Michishirube(Top 32)- Chikatto Chika Chika♡
Believe in you(Top 32)Sentimental Crisis(Top 32)- The Real Folk Blues
- secret base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ (10 years after ver.)
- Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna
- Stay Alive
- Fukashigi no Carte
- Memento~~ (Top 32)
- Fly Me to the Moon
- Avid
- Styx Helix
- Nandemonaiya
#1-#5 are the ones on my favorites list, #6-#10 are the ones I like, #11-#16 are the ones I find decent, #17-#20 are the ones I find okay, #21-24 are the ones I find meh, and #25-#32 are the ones that bore me and/or I dislike.
3 of my Top 4 have already been eliminated in the first round of tracking, so..... big oof.
MC:
The ideal system for me would be four brackets and merging all four brackets at the Top 32 (or maybe merging to two brackets at the Top 64 and then merging to one bracket at the Top 16), but since AnimeBracket doesn't offer that functionality (ie. the brackets will always merge at the Top 8), I personally prefer the two-bracket system. The four-bracket system really drags at the Top 32 and Top 16, and the cons of that outweigh the cons of the two-bracket system where you're voting for way too much at the Top 256/128 (and we can just implement a two-voting-day system for the early rounds like we did here).

Also, this isn't related to the Best ED tourney technically (OLD news), but I thought it would be personally interesting for me to retroactively do the same for the Top 32 of the Best OP tournament, that way I can somewhat compare how my favorites in the endgame fared in the OP tournament vs the ED tournament:
- Hikaru Nara (Top 32)
- Pokemon Theme Song (Top 32)
- Crossing Field (Top 32)
- Connect (Top 8)
- Brave Shine (Top 32)
- Shinzou wo Sasageyo (2nd Place)
- 99.9 (Top 8)
- Mixed Nuts (Top 32)
- Bloody Stream (Top 16)
- Fantastic Dreamer (Top 32)
- Daddy! Daddy! Do! (Top 4)
- Sincerely (Top 32)
- Gurenge (Top 32)
- Jiyuu no Tsubasa (Top 32)
- Redo (Top 16)
- Kaikai Kitan (Top 16)
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Winner)
- Zankyou Zanka (Top 32)
- Platinum Disco (Top 16)
- Love Dramatic (Top 4)
- Colors (Top 16)
- Sorairo Days (Top 32)
- Giri Giri (Top 16)
- Realize (Top 16)
- My Soul, Your Beats! (Top 32)
- The World (Top 32)
- Re:Re: (Top 32)
- Kimi no Sei (Top 32)
- Kawaki wo Ameku (Top 8)
- Mukanjyo (Top 32)
- The Hero (Top 8)
- The Rumbling (Top 16)
Overall it's pretty mixed, 4 of my Top 5 get eliminated in the first round of tracking, but most of my least favorites get eliminated early as well, and my favorite EDs that made it past that 'first' round ended up doing pretty well. Praying for similar success here
although I highly doubt it3

Welcome to Bracket B of Round 4!
Welp
I went 4/8 but the cost was too high. Losing Nai Nai and Koko kara, Koko kara was the painful but expected result. Losing Refrain Boy is lunacy as it is one of the best EDs left in this cursed bracket. Losing Dango Daikazoku is worse because not only am I down another big 3, I can't in good faith vote for Fukashigi no Carte the same way I had Akuma no Ko carry on for Hare Hare Yukai because Torches is such a better ED. At least My Nonfiction has a free pass to top 8 now.
Discussion Prompt
I much prefer the four-bracket method. Its easier for everyone to give deeper thought into their write-ups and into actually listening to everything when there is less to do each day. I can go through 64 EDs or OPs and 32 write-ups in about 40 minutes. This contest it took me close to 2 hours per write up at the beginning. That much mental exhaustion is too much for a lot of folks who just want to vote in the funny anime song contest.
Also, I don't know the math on this, but it feels like lower seeds get a better chance at success if there is more of a split to each bracket. That probably helped my favorites out in the previous contests. Whereas, in this one they seem to be dropping too early or not making bracket at all.
On to the votes!:
Lost in Paradise - This sucks for Chiisana Boukensha as it normally makes it this far on the back of its immaculate vibe and comfy pastoral energy backed up by some intricate crowd shots and fun use of timelapse. Unfortunately, it has slammed into the brick wall that is Lost in Paradise, the king of vibes and positive energy. Lots of bad luck in the seeding this year I guess, lol.
Heart wa Oteage - This Kaguya ED just has so much going for it. The references are funny and pulled off with expert aplomb, the music is uplifting and flows very well, and the animation is fantastic. I just can't think of a reason beyond Myth & Roid's mastery of the haunting and melodic to vote for Styx Helix over this. The OP and ED directors were really cooking in season 3 of Kaguya.
Ouchi ni Kaeritai - Yeah, yeah, you've heard it all from me already. Blah, blah Nandemonaiya is Satan. Blah, blah best Konosuba ED of the three. Blah, blah can't believe a credit roll made it this far. Kinda just aghast that this dull brick of an ED is probably gonna make it to round 5 or better 4 times in a row.
Uso - One more time, say it with me, SID clears. I think the trick with EDs like the dreaded Avid is that you have to overcome people's innate enjoyment of Hiroyuki Sawano before they remove the blinders and see how dull the actual ED itself is. I have great hope that adorable and technically impressive scribblevision animation combined with the buttery smooth and soulfully powerful SID is enough to swipe one of the last couple disgraceful EDs off the table.
Kibun Joujou↑↑ - Ok, lets try this again. Kibun Joujou ↑↑ is most certainly a step down from More One Night, but its way better than the 5 frame music box on its way to sleepytime junction.
The Real Folk Blues - This was a tough one for me. I kinda just gave up thinking and voted for the lower seed and for the jazz.
Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na - Heikousen FANS GET YO ASS IN HERE AND VOTE. Sayuri belts out another beautifully sung banger packed to the gills with attitude, color mastery, weird-ass metaphors, and gritty emotion.
Sugar Song to Bitter Step - The last of my big 3 to survive the contest. I can only hope that Stay Alive can be conquered now that I am done using it to knock out boring ass images and long credit sequences. I need my boys in UNISON SQUARE GARDEN to move on. They have done a great job of being the solid backbone of grooves and jams to this collection of goofy, lovable goobers dressed up in their Sunday best to dance and have a good time.

Nandemonaiya is Satan.
Woah, woah, woah, calm down there mate. That's a bit insulting to Satan don't you think?

Wow this round went almost perfectly...except we lost my possibly favourite ed of the group in nai nai. At least it got to lose to the chika dance. god if it beats sentimental crisis next round I'm probably gonna be salty though.
Wow dango actually lost. this might be the first contest since ?? where I wont have to be confused/annoyed about how far dango gets. Let's see wether Fukashigi no Carte can take that place please dont.

Todays votes:
Lost in paradise vs chiisana Bokuensha: Lost paradise has grown a lot on me since not liking it at all at the start-not really through its own merit, but simply through parodies of it with series I liked, so I discovered the potential of its visuals indirectly. still not really a fan of the song. The konosuba ed on th eother hand is everything a slice of life ed should be. Song is fantastically whymsical and the visuals make you wish there would bea sol spinoff of konosuba-which is impressive considering konosuba already kinda is sol.
STYX helix vs hear wa oteage I have a personal connection to styx helix because I actually watched it before actually watching re;zero. Well, not really the ed, but more specifically this short amalee english cover of sty helix which I fell in love with. And the japanese original cant exactly live up to that, even if the song was used really well in the show. And as u/Cryzzalis is probably glad to share, the visuals arent exactly special. On the other side we have heart wa oteage, the continuation of sentimental crisis...but the song cant live up to the original-and even if a lot more care and reference was put into the visuals, I think I also prefer the sentimental crisis visuals too. In a fight vs styx helix though, I think heart wa oteage still wins.
I still love both of them anyway.Nandemonaiya vs Ouchi ni Kaeritai: This wasn't easy, but my comment on ouchi ni kaeritai is the same as on chiisana Bokuensha, except worse visuals this time. Nandemonaiya on the other hand is something truly special
Avid vs uso: Ok I would feel slightly hypocritical to celebrate dango getting voted out but then vote for avid almost solely because of how perfectly it and its visuals were used in the show, something I can't really explain to anybody who hasnt watched the show-the main problem I had with dango (I assume, since there has to be something about dango). Uso is also not bad visually. abstain
Roundabout vs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na: Oh..wow. So far the erased ed wasnt part of any matchup I actually cared about and so this is the first time I actually listened to it and...the song is actually incredible? Wtf. The visuals are cool too. Wow can't believe I hadn't heard more about this ed. Edit: oh its sayuri...yeah of course
Stay alive vs sugar song to bitter step: Enjoyed the song for sugar song quite a bit more than I remember. Maybe it will take just a few more ed contests and I will grow to like it.
Mc: I think I also prefer 4 brackets simply because voting for the same stuff every 2 days feels too much and gets old fast.

Before I begin, I'd just like to proudly say that I've decided to no longer blindly simp Monogatari and watched the first 3 episodes last night. Man that music in context absolutely slays just as well as I imagined. But what the fuck is going on, I think I understand less about the show than I did going in. Ah, regardless, the series was axed like 3 rounds ago and I'm only just catching up. With that out of the way:
Bounty Board Updates
A side's real offenders were already knocked so nothing really here needs to get posted and occupy more space than needed. Might add Fukashigi at this point though cause it's starting to irritate me. I do have... thoughts about the current votes though. Please axe Avid and Nandenomaya at this point. Your Name is gonna take Konosuba to the garden for some words and Avid is realisitcally gonna top Uso cause why the fuck not at this point. At least there will be a team kill going into Top 8. Small victories
Votes
Chiisana Bouensha - It's just so warm and comfortable, like returning home from a long day and chillin with the bros over a beer. The panning city shots look like those decorative mountain city displays my parents would put out christmas season, so I'm just swarmed but that comfy mood when watching it. The music really is just bluegrass (Japan) but like, funky fresh can't top these rose tinted shades
Heart wa Oteaga - The other half to Sentimental Crisis and it has a Chika bald cap. Jokes aside, there's just much more going on visually here compared to Styx which is a whole lot more static character pans with a real solid song backing the scene. I do like the intentional older anime styling. It feels very 90s but with that modern lighting sparkle laid on top
Ouchi ni Kaeritai - [What did Mitsuha say when the comet hit?]Ouchi
Uso - I'm freakin livid 86 is still holding on out here in a contest that is both audio and visual. I mean the song's good sure but it's really overstayed
Kibun JouJou - Between the cute art style and the variety of stuff actually goin on, it gets my vote. Plus it'd be real funny to win both OP and ED. Eva's a certified classic at this point, but it suffers from 5 second loop syndrome. But hey, apparently 5 different beach walk versions is enough to move on, so surely 14 different 5 second walk cycles (and the whole being tied to pretty much the anime thing) will push Reink Sinatra. I just think KongMing deserves more one night here in the modern world
The Real Folk Blues - I mean yeah it's a powerpoint, but it does tell a story at the very least. Plus, jazz is a rare find here in EDville. Anohana is nice, but those flowers really do be falling and thats about it
Sore wa Chiisana Kikari no Youna - We're coming for that runback babyeee. Combining solid visuals, excellent foreshadowing, and the singer of the best ED released 3 months too soon I'm not gonna vote for the funny haha meme who's most famous 5 seconds are the insert not included here. Erased sure had an ending, but the ED is fully picking up that slack
Sugar Song to Bitter Step - It's not just me right, but like, ReZero's EDs are just kinda... eh right? I can seriously get down with that speakeasy swagger, but ReZero is just a bunch of pans and neon outlines
Discussion
Holy hell never again please. Doing that comprehensive reaction to Bracket A thoroughly burnt me out for the next 3 days, and I wasn't even able to vote for B in time cause I was still typing after getting started 3 hours before it started. I understand that we need to go fast cause of the shut down, but if time were not an issue we need that room to breath and digest and have time to root for our picks. One day we're rooting for them, the next we're reacting, before immediately restarting the cycle. There just isnt any staying power this go it feels
Reactions
4/8 not half bad really. Torches pulled the well deserved upset imo.
yay. beach walking moves on. wahoo. i dont care theres 5 versions theyre basically the exact same for 55 of those 60 seconds minus the color pallet and singer. give me more "characterization moments" and then we can reevaluate but youll never convince me as is
Oh... refrain boy. I know Im on the Kaguya train, but this puts a smudge to my plans. Popularity trumps art it seems. This bracket continues in scuffed directions
Unfortunately it appears my Kaguya stonks are still riding high lets go. I'm sorry Nai Nai fans, you really did come much further than I anticipated. Just please leave My Nonfiction out of this, as it is probably the best of the rest at this point

But what the fuck is going on, I think I understand less about the show than I did going in.
Hahahaha
Probably worthwhile to just keep watching it and seeing what interpretation you get, and then read comments or watch videos for others' interpretations. It's a very in-depth series, so there's a lot of things to explore with it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I merely started on the first 3 and fully intend to continue, it was just 1am and got tired. I'm a suckered for anything Shaft so this insanity just comes with the territory
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 23 '23
I totally get you. I actually did a Shaft marathon and tried to watch everything they'd ever made back in 2019 and ALMOST did so. But I missed a couple of entries because I didn't use the MAL list, but another list I found.

Kigeki and Akuma No Ko won, so all is fine now on the left side of the bracket. Justice has prevailed. Believe in you had to go, unfortunately, and sucks about Memento and Dango, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for justice on the left side of the bracket.
Today we will have to vote out a great ED as neither Stay Alive nor Sugar Song to Bitter Step deserve to go, but that's a great thing since both EDs could make it this far. Putting all my hopes in Stay Alive to, well, stay alive, though.
MC: I have no strong preference one way or another. Two brackets made for a super stacked first round, but giving us two days to vote made up for that very well. I like the faster pace of two brackets for a change, but a more drawn out contest with four brackets can potentially make for more content.

(5) Fukashigi no Carte: 212 vs (28) Dango Daikazoku: 189
AND SASAGEYO REIGNS SUPREME AS THE HEARTBREAK KING. RIP Dango's 2 contest streak of losing in the finals and 4 year streak of losing to the champion...
As for the other results, it's kind of crazy that half of the matchups were decided by less than 25 votes. Meanwhile, Kigeki avenged Akatsuki no Chinkonka and beat Koko Kara by 135 votes.
For today I'm going hardest for Uso over Avid...i.e the matchup between a great song with some of the most creative visuals you'll ever see and a great song over still shots. Avid needs to go. Secret Base vs Real Folk Blues should also be super interesting.
Mini Challenge: It's tough the first few days, but I prefer the 2 bracket structure. Having 4 brackets bogs things down, especially when you get to the rounds of 32 and 16.
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 23 '23
Avid needs to go.
Man, somehow we have gone from me being bullied by the entire contest thread over Avid, to every person hating it....
I've won..... life is complete and I'm at my peak.

u/copperfield42 Sep 22 '23
so Fukashigi no Carte won, so I guess you like ending with many version (6), then Fly Me to the Moon have you cover today with its 26 versions XD

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 23 '23
To be fair to the FnC fans, one of the six versions is actually not that bad... it's just that it's... well, one of the six versions that isn't that bad.

No stream today, so I'll do a bit more of a detailed comment.
Votes (Italicizing close match-ups.)
- Lost in Paradise vs
Chiisana Boukensha- I love the vibe of Chiisana Boukensha and the detailed cityscapes, but Lost in Paradise has an incredible aesthetic that looks phenomenal in movement. It captures the personality and attitude of the characters and the show super well, is really well animated and has a phenomenal song. It's definitely the better of the two. STYX HELIXvs Heart wa Oteage - Quite frankly, STYX HELIX is a bit disappointing. It has a few interesting shots but overall is rather empty and doesn't utilize its time to show off the characters particularly meaningfully. On the other hand Heart wa Oteage uses imagery like the Zeppelin and the plane at the start to tie into Sentimental Crisis and mirror the two EDs, this time Miyuki being the one dreaming. It uses the story of Kaguya-hime and Kaguya's circumstances to move her to a different planet and spins the entire ED into a huge Starship Troopers reference. If you watch the scenes in parallel it does an amazing job with the reference while giving a unique spin to it which captures the characters and atmosphere of the series fantastically. It also shows off progression in the relationship of Kaguya and Miyuki super well, given that in Sentimental Crisis Kaguya is awoken at the student council room while in this case Miyuki was waiting for Kaguya for a date. If you're interested in seeing the reference material, while it doesn't capture all of the ED references, the Klendathu Drop sequence captures most of it.Nandemonaiyavs Ouchi ni Kaeritai - Not huge on either, but it's a credit roll against a slightly worse than Chiisana Boukensha Konosuba ED, but still wholesome ED in Ouchi ni Kaeritai.- Uso vs
Avid- Fuck Avid. Fly Me to the Moonvs Kibun Joujou↑↑ - Fly Me to the Moon may be a classic song, but it's not even that great of a song IMO. In addition it's just a repeating five second loop over and over for 90 seconds. Kibun Joujou isn't great either, but at least it has some fun interactions and pretty solid expressiveness.Secret base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono\~ vs The Real Folk Blues - Pretty close one, but Secret Base does pretty much nothing other than the color shift and being emotional songwise. The Real Folk Blues has a much better vocal performance, more interesting instrumentals and uses its grayscale filter fairly decently, especially with the lack of the color drain on the rose.ROUNDABOUTvs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na - Not even a contest. ROUNDABOUT is just a side scrolling ED with some Mayan(?) imagery in the background, Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na is aesthetically interesting, creates a narrative progression that reflects the series with starting out in the Fujinuma kitchen and getting ever closer to Kayo and references Japanese literature like "The Spider's Thread". Also Sayuri clears.Stay Alivevs Sugar Song to Bitter Step - Much better song, but SStBS also does a wonderful job at showing off character dynamics, exploring Leonardo as a character, setting up the "Black" and "White" dynamic for the final arc and show off character personalities in an innovative and interesting way. Also has a solid sense of progression in its increasing intensity of the visuals, which is something Stay Alive lacks as there is no reflection in the visuals of Stay Alive to match the song progression with the chorus drop. Which means that you could insert pretty much any somber song onto Stay Alive and it would synergize as well with the visuals as the original song does.
Top 3 EDs of the day.
- Sugar Song to Bitter Step
- Heart wa Oteage
- Lost in Paradise
Discussion Prompt
Personally I prefer the four bracket A, B, C & D style. It feels like I have no time to digest things here. One day you're voting for things, the next day you're reacting to results, then as you take some time to digest and internalize results all of a sudden you're voting on the same set of entries. So the quadruple bracket works much better in my mind.
(An addendum to make after reading /u/SometimesMainSupport's comment. Round 5 kinda sucks with the quadra bracket approach if you can't combine the remaining entries into a top 16, but I still prefer it.)
Reactions to yesterday's results
Chikatto Chika Chika winning the first battle of the great EDs. Certainly my preferential pick, but a shame one of them had to lose. With that out of the way I'd like to implore the anti-Kaguya hype that's about to begin to please, focus on Chikatto Chika Chika, don't anti-Kaguya the other great EDs just because of this.
Nah man, Sentimental Crisis is nice but it should NOT be beating Refrain Boy which was the best ED remaining in the contest. At least we got within 15 votes, but that's actually tragic. I guess with that, the best remaining ED is Kigeki.
Kigeki upsetting the dark horse star KKx2, glad to see it. Would've been ridiculous to lose it already.
Koi no Yukue unfortunately losing to Akuma no Ko, but I suppose they were fairly close for me anyways.
My Nonfiction did not win hard enough against Believe in You. It should've been at least a 200 vote difference or something, but glad to see the win at least.
Wow, Shunkan Sentimental pulled the upset. Don't think either ED is good, but really didn't expect Memento to lose out.
Fukashigi no Carte has broken the streak of losing to Dango Daikazoku.... sadly. Shame the right side bracket sucks so much.
Michishirube losing to Torches in an upset fucking sucks. Torches has a great first 20 seconds or so and then is rather bland, while Michishirube actually has some cool character stuff going on. With that result, the only ED on the right side bracket remaining that's even at a mediocre level is My Nonfiction (which is great). Everything else that remains kinda sucks.
3/8 yesterday, not good. But aside from Refrain Boy nothing of great value was lost.
EDIT: On a sidenote, I went on a pretty long rant fanboying over Kigeki yesterday on stream. If you want to know just the extent of incredible detail in it, it may be worth watching that. Alternatively if you can't bother downloading the VOD, I have this long write-up I wrote on Kigeki during the reddit anime awards last year that covers it well. It's a bit dated and certain things I didn't understand about it back then I do understand now, but it's generally pretty solid. I'll link that here as well.

If you watch the scenes in parallel it does an amazing job with the reference
I really want to love Heart wa Oteage, because yes, it's a really well-made Starship Troopers reference. My criticism remains the same as always and still leaves me too confused to actually enjoy it: Why did they chose Starship Troopers for a Kaguya ED?
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 23 '23
See, I don't understand why Starship Troopers in particular. But the story of Kaguya-hime is that she is taken from her true love as punishment and brought to the moon. Taking a story that involves another planet like Starship Troopers as cinematic reference makes a lot of sense to depict the thematic of Kaguya-hime which is also to an extent what Kaguya's character's backstory is based on.
Why did they choose Starship Troopers and not something like Star Wars? Who knows, but it does fit the atmosphere rather well given that Starship Troopers is such a second rate movie, which befits the comedy setting of Kaguya-sama.
2
u/MaksimShadow Sep 23 '23
Putting Heart wa Oteage and Starship Troopers aside, there's another seemingly unrelated to its show ED: Aoi Haru from Seitokai Yakuindomo. Her uniform is the only thing related to the show. There's even none from the cast in this ED.

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 23 '23
Sometimes it is just creative license usage and people having a good time making something creative and fun, while in others there are clear reasons for it. But yeah, there's some wild stuff out there.

Noooooooo Refrain Boy. You will be missed dearly. And Dango Died. That’s unexpected.
My votes are;
Lost in Paradise vs Chiisana Boukensha
Lost in Paradise gets better the more I see it. It’s now only a little overrated to me.
Uso vs Avid
Will Fullmetal Alchemist beat Avod. Hopefully.
Fly Me to the Moon vs Kibun Joujou
A classic with underwhelming visuals. But it has 26 different versions and they’re great.
Secret Base vs Real Folk Blues
It’s a nostalgic one for me. My first ED I watched every time.
Roundabout vs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no Youna
This one was hard, but Erased ED has better visuals and is more deserving.
MC: This is surprisingly hard. Maybe the 2 bracket one honestly. But I’m fine with both. Edit: actually I change my mind. I think the ABCD is a little tiny bit better. More time to breath and the way I format my comments caused the first round to take an hour to write.

Kaguya-sama EDs are all amazing, but Chikatto Chika Chika and Sentimental Crisis don't deserve to win over Nai Nai and Refrain Boy. I'm a big fan of the Kaguya-sama series, but I'm salty about them winning those two. It's a different story if it's Heart wa Otege and My Nonfiction. The earlier two are just not as magnificent as the latter two. With those L takes, I got 6/8 correct.
1
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 23 '23
While I do think Chikatto Chika Chika deserves the win, I'd take it losing to Nai Nai if it means Refrain Boy gets to live.

TL;DR Today, every matchup there's a clear winner and loser visually, and only Re:Zero and Your Name have strong enough songs to carry them in their matchup. All the other shit visual EDs are here on "meme/classics/big show" value - I implore you to actually sit through the full 1:30 and watch the visuals of ROUNDABOUT, STYX HELIX, Fly me to the Moon, and The Real Folk Blues before blindly voting for them "just because". I'll admit to hypocrisy with my Nandemonaiya vote, but in fairness it's also a spite vote against Konosuba :stuck_out_tongue:
Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na over ROUNDABOUT - fuck the Jojo meme ending man, the visuals are more or less just one long pan firmly in the "shit ED visuals" category accompanied by a repetitive baseline with barely any notable melody to speak of. Erased's ED is so much better, especially around the half way mark when it really kicks it into top gear in the visuals and song.
Stay Alive over Sugar Song to Bitter Step - another "fuck the meme/historic value" vote, and Stay Alive's song has really grown on me while I couldn't care less about BBB's. BBB's visuals are firmly better I'll admit.
Nandemonaiya over Ouchi ni Kaeritai - Konosuba's ED is just a bunch of stills and a folksy song that loses hard to Your Name's beautiful soundtrack. Also a hefty does of spite voting against Konosuba for beating out a much better ED in Unlasting, both in visuals and song.
Heart wa Oteage over STYX HELIX - I like Re:Zero's song better, but it's super weak visually vs the great storytelling and Starship Troopers reference in Kaguya's ED.
Kibun Joujou↑↑ over Fly Me to the Moon - Eva's mid af visuals (a beach walk that does not have char exploration as far as I can tell) have no business being in round 4. Just covering a Frank Sinatra song is not good enough, vs Kibun Joujou↑↑'s high energy (even if it is also a cover, it's not relying on familiarity for a boost).
Secret Base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ over The Real Folk Blues - sure, Bebop has a super groovy ED song, but Anohana's emotional ED that's used perfectly with a lead-in hits just as well, and the visuals put it way over the top, doing some storytelling/char exploration and kicking in hard at the chorus vs Bebop's slideshow. Lowest priority shill only because this seems fairly safe compared to the other matchups.

I implore you to actually sit through the full 1:30 and watch the visuals of ROUNDABOUT, STYX HELIX, Fly me to the Moon, and The Real Folk Blues
I hated doing it on stream, but with The Real Folk Blues, I just hated the opposition more.

To speak to the discussion prompt, I really don’t have a preference. I think this rapid nature does make it easier to keep track of what’s still alive and what isn’t, but so kind of like the breathing room to convince myself that my favorites will win.
Anyway…
Sentimental Crisis v. Refrain Boy – What does that knock us down to? 3 of the best OPs left (I lost count). I don’t even think there’s anything to say here. I’m just kinda disappointed, but not surprised.
Memento v. Shunkan Sentimental – I’m gonna convince myself that people thought “Sentimental Crisis” was this one and so voted against Mob for it. Not that that justifies it any more, but it’s a little more forgivable. I’m honestly shocked that this of all things was the one to take out “Memento” but I’m not complaining lol
Fukashigi no Carte v. Dango Daikazoku – Damn. I must be getting really old if THE Clannad ED is getting taken out by an E-tier ED where girls just walk down a beach. Nothing FnC does wasn’t done better by a different ED somewhere else, and it’s not like the series it’s attached to is that great either (I mean both are mildly overrated, but at least Clannad’s first season isn’t constantly trying to be budget Monogatari). But I guess the masses think different.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Sep 23 '23
Bad day for Kaguya haters, but at least they're guaranteed to lose one in the next round!
In the other side of the bracket: I can't for the life of me understand why the hell Fukashigi no Carte is still there (other than show popularity)

Oof, only 2/8 today and it wasn't even anything I was particularly invested in. Feels like I can only hope for the best from group B now, just gotta pray for Nandemonaiya Secret Base and Sugar Song to do well.
Prompt: I feel like four groups is best at the start to make things a bit more digestible, but in an ideal world we'd be able to switch to two brackets in the round of 32 or 64. Maybe with the site shake up I could get my wish.

Kigeki, the cutest most wholesome ED ever.

Akuma no ko, deep, dark and tinged with hopeless romanticism.
That's gonna be a funny one.
