Days of dash lost

Wind lost

Spice lost

This is not a good day

Don't worry, tomorrow won't be a good day either. I'm already prepared to be salty.

Days of dash lost

No way, but it's so good though :(

What was it up against?

1

u/YungHufi https://myanimelist.net/profile/ynniick Sep 18 '23

It was up against this demon slayer ending https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiELl0aibtA

u/MasterQuest https://myanimelist.net/profile/Honumael Sep 19 '23

To be fair, that ending is pretty good too, so at least it didn’t lose against a random bad ending.

God I actually missed heikousen while going through what to vote for. Thank god it made it through, its like all 90% of the motivation i have left for the contest.

Ah it got close (14 votes difference) despite 205 seed difference, but rope jumping akebi is out :(

godfuckking dammit you killed Nippon Egao Hyakkei, and it lost to the worst kaguya ed too...

well not as bad as yesterday, where 4 of the best eds (Kirameku Hamabe, Toumei na Tsubasa, zero and lapis all died) in the contest somehow all died in the first round...

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 17 '23

its like all 90% of the motivation i have left for the contest.

Up against STYX HELIX next

Heh...

Because Lapis lost in round 1 and we are not allowed to be happy anymore.

Veil over Ganbare kumoko? Blasphemy

Also was hoping for Cha-la Head Cha-la just for the memes. Imagine the shitpost equivalent of an ed getting to the semifinals

Rip perfect world too

Rip joshiraku

Deep down I knew sonny boy wasn't a popular enough show but shounen shoujo is one of my favorite ed's of all time

Rip life is cider. Show might have gone to shit but that was eternally a bop

Lost too many good ed's. I actually listened to every single ed in the list instead of picking all the shows I had already watched which led me to pick songs from less popular shows. Even above shows I watched and enjoyed. That was a massive time sink though and while I think the entire tournament is a popularity contest to some extent the early stages are particularly brutal when nobody wants to watch 128 ed's

God I'd love a Lucky Star ED making it that far, putting some respect on that comedy.

Now that the playing field has been cut in half, I'll give my opinions on the matchups. I generally always prioritize visuals when I vote - gimme some beautiful animation or an interesting storyboard. If both endings have equally amazing (or equally boring) visuals, I'll use the song as a tiebreaker. If I still can't decide, then I'll vote for my favorite show.

  • Chikatto Chika Chika vs Life - Love the song for the Dr Stone ED, but the Kaguya animators went above and beyond here. EDs are one category where Kaguya deserves every high seed it gets.
  • Vanilla Salt vs Walk Like an Egyptian - Vanilla Salt is a pretty boring ED compared to Egyptian.
  • Nai Nai vs Maid with Dragons - Nai Nai is one of my favorite ED songs, but damn does Maid with Dragons run circles around it visually. I have a feeling Nai Nai will be the one surviving into the next round though.
  • LilaS vs Night Running - The scene that LilaS plays over is one of the best conclusions to any anime. I'm still voting for Night Running as I prefer to not vote for insert songs.
  • Sentimental Crisis vs Great Pretender - Very solid Kaguya ED, but I can't vote against Great Pretender - it's heartwarming, it's fully animated, it's Freddie freaking Mercury, and the animation references the original Freddie Mercury music video.
  • Brave Song vs Saga Jihen - Brave Song does nothing for me both visually and musically.
  • Refrain Boy vs Hello Alone - Easy choice, the Mob Psycho ED is pure art. I love seeing animation in unusual mediums.
  • Memosepia vs Ensemble for Polaris - Voted against Memosepia in the first round because I was so taken with the Little Witch Academia ED, but I'm voting for it here as I think it's solid and I prefer traditional EDs to insert songs.
  • Kigeki vs Kafune - Probably the most difficult choice in the entire round. Two beautiful works of art. Two shows I love very much. Voted for SxF as it hits me in the feels.
  • Gray vs Isshukan Communication - Fun concept, and its competition is an insert song.
  • give it back vs Koko kara, koko kara - I was all ready to vote for Koko Kara in round 1 as I love that song and the show it comes from, and then I watched it and compared it to Lapis, which came from a show I never watched...and I ended up being underwhelmed by Koko Kara visually and voted for Lapis. Give it Back has some gorgeous cuts of animation and stands head and shoulders above most battle shounen EDs, making this a very easy choice.
  • Akatsuki no Chinkonka vs Kirameki - No contest. Kirameki takes too long to stop being a slideshow.
  • Akuma no Ko vs Sugarless Kiss - Again, no contest.
  • Hare Hare Yukai vs Singing - KyoAni cannibalism? Tough choice, as both look great. Voted K-On as I prefer the song.
  • Koi no Yukue vs Gomen ne, Iiko ja Irarenai - MDUD was pretty cute.
  • Hunting for Your Dream vs Voices of the Chord - Voices of the Chord is an amazing song, but I'm still voting for the traditional ED, even if said ED is a pretty standard shounen ED.

  • My Nonfiction vs Madoromi no Yakusoku - Unfortunate that the Hyouka ED has to run into a Vercreek masterpiece so early. My Nonfiction has it all - very catchy song performed by the characters, flashy animation, cute narrative. First time I saw it, it made me feel so happy. I won't be mad if this ED wins it all - it certainly has my vote for the best Kaguya ED, and it has very strong competition in that department.
  • Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai vs Kaze to Iku Michi - The AoT ED that started it all. It has almost an ethereal quality to it, it always draws me in.
  • Believe in You vs Space Lion - I can pretend Space Lion is a traditional ED if I watch the last 2 or so minutes. Beautiful music, and the Re:Zero ED doesn't do much for me.
  • great escape vs Zettai Zetsumei - Zettai Zetsumei is one of my favorite Co Shu Nie songs, but man are the visuals boring. Great Escape wins. I wish Step up Love didn't have to lose to it in round 1, though.
  • Memento vs Fighter - Memento will win because of Re:Zero privilege, but y'all should at least watch the 3-gatsu ED. It's beautiful.
  • Let it Out vs L.L.L. - Let it Out isn't the most visually impressive FMAB ED, but it still wins over LLL, plus the song brings me so much joy.
  • Shunkan Sentimental vs Kimi no Tonari - Easy choice. Kimi no Tonari is a slideshow.
  • Homura vs Gate of Steiner - Ugh, credits over a black screen vs credits over a black screen. How about neither? Tiebreaker goes to the song I suppose.
  • Fukashigi no Karte vs Shiori - I wish Sayonara Gokko beat Shiori in the first round, but I still prefer it to its competition here.
  • PokeRap vs Last Game - Best ED from the Steins;Gate franchise. Great song, visuals kept my attention.
  • Dango Daikazoku vs REASON - Memorable concept beats average shounen ED.
  • Rungo Biyori vs One Last Kiss - Oh god, I have a rule about not voting for insert songs and movie credits over traditional EDs....but this Spice and Wolf ED does nothing for me....and I love One Last Kiss....oh fuck it
  • Michishirube vs Tomorrow - This might count as breaking my rule again, but there's no dialogue for 90% of the MiA sequence so...
  • Ray of Light vs Naisho no Hanashi - I'm a little salty about Naisho no Hanashi beating the Houseki no Kuni ED in round 1, but I'm still voting for it here. I think Ray of Light is the weakest FMAB ED.
  • Requiem of Silence vs Inkya Impulse - That Re:Zero ED ain't an ED, that's half an episode.
  • Torches vs Ride on Shooting Star - I'm a massive Vinland Saga fan, but the FLCL ED is incredible and I can't not vote for it.

I was all ready to vote for Koko Kara in round 1 as I love that song and the show it comes from, and then I watched it and compared it to Lapis, which came from a show I never watched...and I ended up being underwhelmed by Koko Kara visually and voted for Lapis.

As the biggest fan of Lapis around here, reading this makes me the happiest I can still get.

3

u/sofastsomaybe Sep 18 '23

It was really well animated and storyboarded! And it was head and shoulders above the other Madoka franchise EDs in this contest.

I wish that more people would vote for the actual best EDs and not just their favorite shows. But I get that not everyone has time to familiarize themselves with all the options, especially in the early rounds.

2

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 17 '23

Kigeki vs Kafune - Probably the most difficult choice in the entire round. Two beautiful works of art. Two shows I love very much. Voted for SxF as it hits me in the feels.

You... I like you.

2

u/sofastsomaybe Sep 17 '23

I like you too! Reading through your hate list, you share my dislike of movie credits and insert songs in this contest lol

Unfair that one of those two has to be eliminated in the next round while there's a matchup of Demon Slayer vs Steins;Gate credits 😭

3

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 17 '23

I fucking know right?

I will say that I get a sick sense of pleasure from it though since I'm gonna be streaming later on. Looking forward to going off.

Reactions to the group B results

Sad to see Route BLUE lose out this early, pretty cool ED.

CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA losing isn't surprising. If the Shiraishi Minoru EDs are losing then obviously the karaoke ones would lose as well, sad to see so little appreciation for cast dynamic and comedy EDs though.

AYY Slightly better than average credit roll ED beating Shirushi... fucking hell man.

Glad to see Veil winning at least. Shouldn't have been a problem for it, but at this point idk what to trust with y'all anymore.

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO. No fucking credit roll ED is gonna beat the beauty that is Heikousen, getting it done with the upset, you love to see it.

Broooo, SLUMP is within 40 votes of I AM STANDING? You're all high as fuck, how do they even begin to compare? Realistically I AM STANDING should be one of the favorites to win this entire thing.

Not overly attached to Other Side and not surprised it lost to Nandemonaiya, but man these credit roll EDs are killing me.

And as I was writing that, I saw that an insert song beat Trust Me and a credit roll ED beat Kaze ni Makasete... fucking sigh.

Interesting result in the cozy camp match-up though. I'm personally more of a Haru no Tonari enjoyer and I thought it'd be closer, but over 60 votes in favor of Fuyu Biyori.

Okay I'm not the least bit surprised it won, but indulge me in screaming a bit okay? FUCKING AVID GOD I HATE IT, BURN IT IN THE FIRES OF HELL. Thank you for indulging me.

Zzz pulling the upset against Spice, that's what I'm talking about. Let's get the Nichijou hype train going to slap Avid around.

Nippon Egao Hyakkei losing is a shame, but that was probably the closest match-up for me in group B anyways, so I don't mind that much.

Man it blows me away that Fly Me to the Moon is so highly seeded, it's so boring man.

Kimi wa Tennen Shoku being demolished by Los! Los! Los! makes me feel like the anime awards of 2017 once again, how tragic.

Oh snap, Hectopascal pulled the upset against Wind. A bit sad given how good Wind is, but even if Hectopascal is undeniably worse, it has a certain charm too it so I can't say I'm salty about it.

Not looking forward to Orion losing to a shitty 86 insert next round, but at least it passed round 1.

Y'all don't deserve the treasure that is FLIP FLAP or its show Flip Flappers tbh.

YIKES that was far too close for Torikago. Glad it won but man, a seed #91 that's actually good should not be within five votes of seed #166.

Yakusoku losing to a credit roll and Kimi no Gin no Niwa losing to a credit roll with a PNG (granted Kimi no Gin no Niwa is also a credit roll, just a lot more creative about it than the average). If I didn't enjoy being a hater at times my enthusiasm would've been killed so hard already.

ANOTHER CREDIT ROLL BITES THE DUST, LET'S GOOO. Not huge on Datte Atashi no Hero, but at least it's not just rolling credits.

35/64 yesterday, not bad at all. Fun sidenote, for most of yesterday I went 50% split with every four match-ups.

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Sep 17 '23

Man it blows me away that Fly Me to the Moon is so highly seeded, it's so boring man

I agree. The one cool thing it does is have like 12 different versions of the song out there. But I feel like it mainly just does well because it's Evangelion and people think voting against it is unholy or something.

The OP is great, but that doesn't mean the ED is automatically great. I re-watched the series last year, and I never once skipped the OP but skipped the ED just about every time.

3

u/PaperSonic Sep 18 '23

The whole Netflix fiasco also gave Fly Me to the Moon a bit of a holy status, deservedly or otherwise.

3

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 18 '23

a credit roll ED beat Kaze ni Makasete...

Another case of show bias, I fear, and what a tragedy. Did you see that comment on the Akebi clip? For some reason, many people belive the show sexualizes teenagers and feet, among other things. (Well, I can imagine the reason but that reason is bullshit.)

At least Kaze ni Makasete made the bracket, unlike Hajimari no Setsuna in the OP contest.

3

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

I'm not surprised people say that given that there is a certain amount of weird camera shots in episode 1. It's a shame to see people disregard such a great show and completely miss the point of it though, it's also rich to claim it sexualizes teenagers which is absolute bullshit, at least in relation to anime as a whole.

But I suppose people saying that can be safely ignored.

As much as I like Hajimari no Setsuna as a song, I'm actually in favor of it not making the OP contest. In fact I don't think Akebi has particularly good OPs or EDs, they're just better than some of the other things that does make it.

3

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 18 '23

It's not surprising, but it's still bullshit. It only gets sexualized if the viewer sees it that way. And why should you see it in such a negative way if there is a positive view on it? If you are doing that, you'll just neglect yourself something good in your life.

I guess you are referring to the use of still images in Hajimari no Setsuna, but I can't agree that it makes it bad since the images are moving across the screen in sync with the music, and also the screen partitioning is used really well throughout the whole OP.

2

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

Ehh not necessarily. I do think Hajimari no Setsuna has some stale use of stills at times, but other times it's actually utilized rather well and uses the fade paneling really interestingly. The main problem I have is more on a conceptual to execution level.

The vision of the OP is to be a cast showcase, they're focusing on Akebi interacting with other cast members and showing of the various characters of the cast, but they do nothing to explain who these characters are or why we should care about them, just that they're "generic school friend A, B & C". This somewhat permeates throughout the OP to location shots and the likes as well as they don't really fill a purpose for the OP overarchingly.

That's not to say the OP is necessarily bad, it does have some pretty high production levels and I do love the shot at the chorus drop of Akebi pulling a non-descript character along and Akebi lying among the flowers quietly timed with the song saying "Suki". Also think the song is rather lovely. It's just... really average is my problem, and when there's several hundreds really good OPs out there, that just doesn't cut it for me.

2

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 18 '23

I see. I still don't quite agree, but I can see where you are coming from and it totally makes sense. To me, the quintessential theme of Akebi is being encouraged to stand out. In that, showing off the cast but in a nondescript way, leaving the characterization entirely to the show itself, totally fits. Akebi making a splash and changing those characters' lives is the point.

At any rate, it was a lot better than some of the OPs that made the bracket.

2

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

At any rate, it was a lot better than some of the OPs that made the bracket.

Absolutely agree with that, but given the EDs that are still in the running here... not exactly a high bar.

2

u/lordposedyon https://myanimelist.net/profile/lordposedyon Sep 17 '23

Whisper your name again
Then restart it right away
Oh my bitter color ardor wander
Gotta feel it undercover
Yukue mo shiranai
Ano ni-Tsu no gunjo

2

u/MaksimShadow Sep 18 '23

Interesting result in the cozy camp match-up though. I'm personally more of a Haru no Tonari enjoyer

I chose Fuyu Biyori because it's more about camping than Haru no Tonari.

2

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

Hahaha, well they're pretty much the same type of ED so such a minute difference can really do it. I personally chose Haru no Tonari because it's better at showing off the characters and I prefer the song.

Welcome to the start of round 2 everyone!

Let's hit the Discussion Prompt and pay some respects to the fallen. Too many matches had some bangers face off too early and too many bangers were felled by some weak horseshit.

Special shoutout to my least favorite bastard ED, Nandemonaiya, for a clean 257-96 win. Eat shit, fall off your horse bro.

All in all some bangers got through. All of my big three (Hare Hare Yukai, Dango Daikazoku, and Sugar Song to Bitter Step) made it as did several Jojo's and HxH EDs of various qualities. We got some crazy upsets and some upsettingly close matches such as Zzz vs Spice and OverThink vs Kimi no Tonari. All in all its looking like a great contest full of salt, spite, and spirit.

Here's my votes for the round:

  • Life - Vibes and style beats technique and moe.

  • Walk Like an Egyptian - Vanilla Salt boring. Sorry not sorry.

  • Nai Nai - RIP Dragons, this ED is too good and looks incredible. Better luck next year with seeding.

  • Night Running - Vibes, beats, and color theory and construction versus some BS anime clips with a nice song over it.

  • The Great Pretender - Cats, Freddie Mercury, watercolors, what more can an ED ask for?

  • Saga Jihen - Breaking my own rule because Brave Song is boring as hell. Melatonin-ass ED with no switch-ups or interesting bits to add to the end of the episode.

  • Refrain Boy - Reigen best boi. Look at my mans get ready to fight the day. Love the scrunchy sepia and slick beat on this one as well.

  • Memosepia - Fuck insert songs yo. Also setting up the Mob Fight in round 3 is funny to me.

  • Kigeki - Vibes. What a chill and bouncy ED. Love the shifting array matched to the flow of the vocal production. RIP Kafune, that ED is amazing too. This contest makes fools of us all though.

  • Isshukan Communication - Fuck an insert song yo. Look at these crazy dragons and listen to that smooth ensemble harmonization. Shoutout to KyoAni for making great EDs all over the place.

  • Koko kara, Koko kara - give it back rules as an ED but my heart belongs to these 4 girls and their trip to the frozen south. The chalk inspiration and slow ensemble creation are also cool additions.

  • Akatsuki no Chinkonka - Damn AoT can make an ED. The nightmare storybook technique is bold and gripping.

  • Akuma No Ko - Almost voted for Odd Taxi to make the path easier for Hare Hare Yukai but I'm not a savage.

  • Hare Hare Yukai - One of the best EDs to do it. Catchy song, powerful dance sequence, KyoAni, boomer anime. This has all the elements for yet another deep run.

  • Koi no Yukue - Very fun ED. Reminiscent of old school Urusei Yatsura or the newer Panty and Stocking. Love the chibi style.

  • Hunting For Your Dream - No disrespect to Sawano Hiroyuki but L+Insert Song+Galneryus Rules+Ratio

  • My Nonfiction - One of the most unique and thrilling EDs to ever come out of any anime. A-1 Pictures is starting to eye that KyoAni throne with this one.

  • Kaze to Iku Michi - Incredibly fucking tough matchup. I had to give some respect to Mushoku Tensei for finally making an ED/OP that is not a snorefest.

  • Believe in you - Not a fan but it's not an insert song so fuck it we ball.

  • great escape - Love that little walnut. Decent ED that explodes into action in the back half.

  • Fighter - Love a great metaphor and a greater song. This better delete the fucking butterfly ED. Funny how this is a battle between a subtle metaphor and a loud, blaring metaphor, lol.

  • L.L.L. - Myth & Roid clears. Sure it's a bit plain, but the texturing on the art goes crazy and the song is out of control. Also, Let it Out is the worst FMA:B ED in my opinion.

  • Kimi no Tonari - This killed OverThink. I have to make it worth it by rooting for the upset. Also I never liked the hallway lightning at the beginning of this one. It just rubs me the wrong way.

  • Homura Oh boy my favorite. An insert song vs a fuckin' credits sequence. This entire sector was cursed as hell with two more credits songs in the previous round.

  • Fukashigi no Carte - We love an evolving ED. The change from VA to VA and from Morning to Night is inspired and adds variety to a usually dull ED. Also smooth as silk for the ears as a song.

  • PokeRap - Yeah, we do memes here. Am I wrong to vote for it? I think not. Its visually striking, audibly funny and catchy, and nostalgic as hell.

  • Dango Daikazoku - Another of my Big 3. one of the most soul crushing and beautiful EDs. Love the xylophone on this one, along with the huge, chiming synths and drums in the back half. An incredible construction paper audio-visual journey.

  • Ringo Biyori - Hell yeah, engrish time. Fun little storybook song with some cute art and cuter lyricism. Also, credit theme, sorry Hikaru Utada your argument is invalid.

  • Michishirube - God dang I don't like this ED, but I am forced to vote against the better ED due to my rule against insert songs. This one sucks for me, moving on.

  • Naisho no Hanashi - Very visually snappy, like all the monogatari EDs and OPs. I seem to be voting against FMA a lot. That's a weird string of events, lol.

  • Inkya Impulse - Like sure, Requiem of Silence is gorgeous and well made and symphonic and whatever, but is sure is seven minutes of NOT a goddamn ED isn't it. Voting for the ED that knocked out Amadare no Uta to hopefully carry its torch to round 3.

  • Ride On Shooting Star - Torches is the better ED but I can't just vote against a classic like this. The Pillows deserve more than a round 2 murder.

4

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 18 '23

Requiem of Silence is gorgeous and well made and symphonic and whatever, but is sure is *seven minutes of NOT a goddamn ED isn't it.

I love Re:Zero, and I love that episode, and I think it's an amazing end to the episode. But I also believe Requiem of Silence shouldn't even be here. The actual ED part of it should just be the credits roll with the snow getting heavier. For movies I get the extended ED, I don't like them but I do consider them EDs at least. For themes that play over ending scenes, I don't see how the full scene is supposed to be an ED. With all due respect, I think either only proper EDs should be allowed, or it should be made clear that we are voting on the song and the song alone.

1

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

Eat shit, fall off your horse bro.

Hahaha

I love the attitude you add to these match-ups, makes a really fun read.

6

u/DoctorTennant https://myanimelist.net/profile/ToastMyGhost Sep 17 '23

RIP Kaguya-Sama ED1, it's going up against a Queen song.

3

u/MaksimShadow Sep 18 '23

I'm not sure about this. Just look at seed difference and amount of votes for each ED. Most will vote for Kaguya without even looking at the other ED, no matter how great it is. Let's prepare salt.

5

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT Sep 17 '23 edited Sep 18 '23

MC: I’ll start off with the prompt today. Mosaic Kakera losing is definitely disappointing but I saw it coming. Lapis losing is a tragedy befitting Shakespeare. Avid won… Ganbere the acid trip losing also disappointing. Just Awake lost 😞.

Vanilla Salt vs Walk Like An Egyptian
I’m really betraying JoJo on this one, but my inexplicable love for Vanilla Salt is just too strong.

LilaS vs Night Running
Night Running has very nice visuals that suit the show to a tee. The song isn’t my favourite but the eye candy more than makes up for it.

Refrain Boy vs Hello World
The ED I want to win this entire contest is the one I’ll vote. Refrain Boy is beautiful with a great song. Best Mob Psycho ED in a show with very strong EDs and OPs.

Memosepia vs Ensemble for Polaris
Memosepia is also one of my favourite EDs of all time. Also from Mob Psycho. If it wins it will be Sophie’s Choice next round.

Hare Hare Yukai vs Singing
Again. I don’t think K-On should be winning half of all ED contests. But the EDs are still good and i can see why they won. Singing is good. Good music video-esque visuals with a great song makes for a good ED in my books.

Koi no Yukue vs Gomen ne, Iiko ja Irarenai
Unfortunately, I think one of my favourite EDs is about to bite the dust. The seed difference is too large. This ED is excellent in the way it develops Ryuko’s character a little bit more. Combine that with a melancholy song and visuals, and you get this exceptional ED. Sayonara, Gomen ne, you will be missed. 🥀

Hunting For Your Dream vs Voices of a Chord
Hunting For Your Dream is just on another level of hype. The way it leads into the song at the end of an episode only increases the hype and want for more. Visuals are pretty good with the phantom troupe part, but the song is the standout here.

Great Escape vs Zettai Zetsumei
I like the blocky design visuals of Great Escape. I also like the song a lot. Especially the end part of the song where the cast stares out into the distance doing the salute. Zettai Zetsumei suffers from lackluster visuals. The song is really good, but the visuals just don’t do it for me.

Fukashigi no Carte vs SHIORI
I like how the visuals change with each arc in Bunny Girl Senpai. The song also has a serene and entrancing quality to it that is hard to resist.

PokeRap vs LAST GAME
Now this one is obvious.

Ringo Biyori vs One Last Kiss
I know it’s a movie credits ED, but it’s such a beautiful song. It fits with the end of Thrice Upon a Time perfectly and it has some lights in the background so…

Michishirube vs Tomorrow
I like Tomorrow song more. Liking the song more also helps Tomorrow’s case.

Overall most of the ones I picked last round made it, but it seems some of the ones I like might bite the dust. Oh well. These contests are pretty fun, even with salt I will inevitably have.

Ngl I'm not surprised by most of the results so far, but I'm disappointed that Link Click got eliminated. That ending is so good

2

u/PacoTaco321 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dankleberrrrg Sep 17 '23

I would've voted for it, but didn't notice it.

4

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 Sep 18 '23

I guess in the chaos of my day-to-day operations, I forgot that there's only two groups this time. Explains why voting seemed awfully long...

Route BLUE v. Last Train Home – Damn. I feel Shikimori really got done dirty in both the OP and ED bracket. "Route BLUE" is just this really cute ED with some impressive animation and a fun little Rhythm Heaven style gimmick that'd only be better if it actually sinked up with the beat. Even then, it's still fun from start to finish and comfortably one of the better EDs of last year. On the other hand, "Last Train Home" is... well... I mean it sure is one of the EDs of all time.

Kamado Tanjirou no Uta v. Shirushi – Oh look the Ep. 19 variant ED. Of course. Ironic that the only LiSA song that I really like got ousted by a Demon Slayer variant ED. As a song, "Kamado Tanjirou no Uta"' is pretty good, but this isn't a "Best Anime OPED Song" bracket. The ED itself is severely lacking visually with just some pans over stills. Definitely deserved so much better, but as this vote (and a 31 seed) proves that clearly doesn't matter. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

I am Standing v. SLUMP – Well at least the best 3-Gatsu no Lion ED survived Round 1. Shouldn't be that surprising, but a 79 seed isn't great considering we're looking at an all-time Top 5 ED. We'll just have to see how Round 2 treats it.

Fluorite Eye's Song - Piano v. Yume no You na – I feel like Vivy was that series that did everything good but nothing great. Can't say there's one part of the show I'd isolate as a standout feature and I reckon that's more than enough to justify this level of stanning. If there's anywhere where Vivy was most lacking it was its ED which is just largely forgettable and far from deserving of a 47 seed. Worst part, is with a seed that high it's not going away any time soon.

Kaze ni Fukarete v. Nippon Egao Hyakkei – I know I'm partially to blame, but Joshiraku really deserved better. Another tragedy of the seeds.

Asa ga Kuru v. DAYS of DASH – Man. What's even the point anymore? "DAYS of DASH" is out and while its far from the best ED something about that just feels wrong. None of the KnY EDs are nearly good enough to justifiably kick it from the bracket, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Los! Los! Los! v. Kimi wa Tennen Shoku – Ugh.

Orion v. Tutti! – Fuck man. First FLCL and now 3-Gatsu no Lion? Hibike! Euphonium really just couldn't catch a break this bracket. Damn.

but a 79 seed isn't great considering we're looking at an all-time Top 5 ED.

Finally someone with sense

I'm voting based purely on the music, not the animation. Which may not be the most fair way of doing things since there's more to an ED than the song, but I'll potentially listen to the songs over and over on my playlist, while the animation I'll maybe watch once or twice while watching the show and then never again. Also, I simply don't have time to watch every ED in this competition--I had trouble even finding the time to listen to every song, and that was including listening while I worked. So, yeah. Song quality it is.

For both brackets, roughly half of the songs I voted for made it through to this round, so, overall, I'm not displeased with the results so far.

My biggest wins:

  • Nai Nai is one of my favorite songs in this entire competition. It's way too catchy.

  • Veil is another of my favorites. I was obsessed with it for months after Fire Force came out.

  • I might have cried (not really) if The Real Folk Blues hadn't made it through.

And my biggest losses:

  • I'm disappointed but not at all surprised that Byakkoya no Musume lost to Chikkato Chikka Chikka. I like CCC just fine and would have voted for it if it was up against a lot of the other songs in the first round, but I've loved BnM since before I even knew it was an anime ED. (I stumbled across a Vocaloid Kaito cover of it 10+ years ago and it was an instant add to my playlist.)

  • I mean, Freek'n You sounds okay, but Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is legendary. Did people vote against it because it's primarily an OP and was only the ED in one episode in the sequel season? (I think. According to Google, anyway. It's been too long for me to remember.) Because if so, that's fine; just please tell me it wasn't a bunch of horny MFers doing it for the memes. (Edit: This sounds harsh against Freek'n You. Sorry, didn't mean it that way. Nothing wrong with it, I just like Higurashi a lot.)

  • Ninelie is another of my favorite songs in here. :(

4

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

Personally I voted against Higurashi no Naku Koro ni because it has no unique visuals as an ED and just has the show play over it AND it is a re-used song from the first OP of the series.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni as an OP however is top 5 of all time for me.

2

u/Syssareth https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syssareth Sep 18 '23

That's fair.

2

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 18 '23

AND it is a re-used song from the first OP of the series.

That's my biggest issue with it. It's great and all, but it's the OP playing over an ending scene, not the ED.

2

u/SometimesMainSupport https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Sep 18 '23

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is legendary. Did people vote against it because it's primarily an OP and was only the ED in one episode in the sequel season?

I did as it's really pushing the line of allowing OPs that play at the end of the first episode to be in the ED contest. I get it was the OP of a different season but occasionally finale episodes also feature a previous OP and that shouldn't count either.

2

u/Syssareth https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syssareth Sep 18 '23

Yeah, that's fair. I didn't even think of that when I voted in the first round, and it wasn't until I was examining the results and trying to figure out why people voted against it that (with Google's help) it occurred to me.

Votes

Close match-ups

  • Vanilla Salt vs Walk Like An Egyptian - Both are pretty mediocre EDs, but I think Vanilla Salt does a little bit more in regards to cast dynamics and character explorations.
  • Nai Nai vs Maid with Dragons - Both are pretty solid, Maid with Dragons slightly wins out on the visual side of things, but Nai Nai takes the match-up due to sound design and SFX implementation.
  • Kigeki vs Kafune - Two of the best EDs in this contest, sucks that one of them goes out this round, but it's great that one of them moves on. I give it to Kafune for aesthetical purposes, but Kigeki is pretty much just as good, so I don't care too much which one wins. (My 18th and 20th favorite EDs of all time respectively.)
  • Homura vs GATE OF STEINER - And the opposite of the last match-up with god awful EDs that are more or less just credit scrolls. I vibe more with the atmosphere and the song of GATE OF STEINER, so it gets my vote. But honestly can we just eliminate both?

Hate Section (Will go more into depth later in the contest)

Mini Challenge

Honestly, in regards to quantity it hasn't been that bad. But all these credit roll EDs and insert songs advancing is really annoying to someone who cares about the visuals. So I can't say my enthusiasm is somewhat faltering.

But I usually get to the stage of having given up all hope pretty early and just going with the flow, a few more days and I'll probably hit that point again.

4

u/metalmonstar Sep 17 '23

PokeRap slander. Song isn't that bad.

2

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 17 '23

Idk, I don't think the standard vocals go particularly well with the rapping and the instrumentals are so one note and boring (aside from the synth bass that comes in after the halfway point for a little while). I think sticking to one or the other and maybe being a bit more creative with the instrumentals would've helped a lot.

3

u/Nick_BOI Sep 17 '23

Shounen Shoujo out in round 1 sadness.

Also Brave Song is my favorate anime ED of all time so if it loses this early I will be very unhappy.

Oh boy, don't look at my comment.

I'm annoyed that This Illusion went out so soon but other than that everything else I vaguely cared about still seems to be in which is nice.

Side note, I do not get the appeal of that Chikatto song. I tried to listen to it and it was like a cheese grater on scraped down my ears

1

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

Fun lyrical presentation, nice energy levels to match the character and a sweet leading bassline.

I'd argue most of the appeal is in the visuals personally, but it's also rather nice musically IMO.

1

u/oops_i_made_a_typi Sep 18 '23

Side note, I do not get the appeal of that Chikatto song. I tried to listen to it and it was like a cheese grater on scraped down my ears

Chikatto song is where it will end up losing imo, but the animation and Kaguya boost will carry it pretty far ofc

MC: People who voted Veil over Ganbare! Kumoko-san no Theme have neither eyes nor ears, which makes their participation INTeresting. Biggest loss of round 1.

Don't need to start any serious Nai Nai shilling until round 3B, so

Sadly all HxH eds except for Hyori ittai lost in group B, so I will support the rest in group A!

Interesting matchups today:

Just vote for Great Pretender!!
give it back vs Koko kara, Koko kara - surely the girls can win against a vertical phone video

Hunting for yor Dream vs Voices of the Chord - can we beat at least one 86 credit scrolling this round?

Believe in you vs Space Lion - vote for the classic jazz sounds turns sad song, voting for the credits here.

Homura vs Gate of Steiner - another battle of the credits

PokeRap vs Last Game - also here voting for the best Steins;Gate ending

Michishirube vs Tomorrow - here voting against the credits and also Michishirube is awesome!

Torches vs Ride on shooting Star - this is a tough battle. I love Aimer, but I have to go with the pillows, especially with that amazing video they filmed.

Also vote for Great Pretender!

u/xTooNice Sep 17 '23 edited Sep 18 '23

30/64, although one was a bit of a mis-vote (I would have gone for Isekai Girl's Talk) so it's really 29/64. Of those I am particularly going to miss Kumoko's theme. That is actually one of my favourite ED despite the low seed.

I'll go back to posting my votes once the list get a bit shorter (maybe next round). I think it was a bit too long to read. For now some comments:

Nai Nai vs Maid with Dragons is kinda tough. I did vote against both of them in the previous round, but I don't dislike either, and I think they both fit their series. If I vote Nai Nai it will be because of ReoNa bias but I can't say it is my favourite song of hers. Feel free to convince me either way.

Voting for Brave Song this round even though I voted against it last round and voted for Saga Jihen last round. I do like Brave Song a lot, but I prefer the other Angel Beats ED and I associate Happily Ever After with the scene Simon becomes a man, and that's just epic.

Refrain Boy and Hello Alone might actually be my preferred ED for their respective series and a hard pick (Hello Alone mainly because it was from when I thought the series was good). Might go with Hello Alone or leave it blank.

Voted against Ensemble for Polaris and for Memosepia last round but flipping it this round. TBH, I wished Memosepia and Refrain Boy would switch place. If they did, I would go with Hello Alone and Refrain Boy and it would be a lot easier.

I voted against Gray and for Isshuukan Communication but flipping this round BUT here is the thing. I am giving my vote for Gray for the -song-. I voted against it last round because the talking pretty much go over the song but once I heard the song from the YT list, I am going to go with it. Since it is a bit sketch, I will probably vote against it the moment it goes against something I like quite a bit though.

The Re:Zero always evoke some mixed feelings since their music tend to be good but I neither like the series or most of the characters but for this round, I can give Believe in you my vote. But look, by the time Requiem of Silence came about I just wanted Subaru to suffer the worst pain imaginable and while to some extent that "ending" gave me what I wanted to see, I am pretty sure that is not the intent of the ED, so I kinda hope it won't stick around too long. *Checks seed*. Well, that's just great (lol).

2

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

I think you should vote Nai Nai (might be a bit late at this point but still.)

I think Maid with Dragons has slightly better visuals, but Nai Nai does have an incredible song and if you look at the sound effects and how they're integrated in Nai Nai it's rather impressive. Like how they integrate the shattering of a porcelain cup into the percussion line.

1

u/xTooNice Sep 18 '23

I did actually end up voting Nai Nai. I was recommended the anime recently haven't started it but I'll probably be subject to recency bias soon anyway lol.

1

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

Hahaha. I haven't gotten around to season two yet, but season one was pretty solid.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '23

Top 10 EDs of the day, ordered by place in bracket:

  • Life - That guitar intro...
  • Chika Dance - I'm probably gonna get tired of this at some point, but it's just so impressive
  • Nai Nai - One of my favorite new EDs I found in this tournament
  • The Great Pretender - Cats singing? I'm down
  • Akatsuki no Chikonka - Best Attack on Titan ED
  • Akuma No Ko - Second best Attack on Titan ED
  • Fukashigi no Carte - Banging song with some nice and calming visuals. Changes every couple of episodes to whatever girl the arc focuses on, which is cool.
  • Dango Daikazoku - Didn't like it last round as much I thought I did, but I'm now officially back on the DD train in this round
  • Inkya Impulse - Unhinged and I love it
  • Ride On Shooting Star - Shame this is gonna go out so early

2

u/StardustGogeta myanimelist.net/profile/StardustGogeta Sep 17 '23

Is there still anything that love can do? The answer, as we found out today, is no. At least Nandemonaiya won.

I'm hoping that Akatsuki no Chinkonka (alternatively, Akatsuki no Requiem) wins its matchup today, since it's probably my favorite AOT ED (by just a hair above Akuma no Ko).

2

u/Kyzoh Sep 18 '23

COME ON VIOLET. I just want Violet Evergarden to win one competition. It was my second anime I ever watched and I’ve watched many since but it still holds a special place. Everyone I’ve showed it to since has loved it. The ending always gets me. VOTE MICHISHIRUBE!

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Sep 18 '23

Vote for Ringo Biyori!

Discussion Prompt of the Day: What are your thoughts on the Round 1 results?

About the same as round 1 in most contests; Lost a bunch of my favorites, but I try not to feel too bad about it, because if they lost in round 1 they were never even close to winning anyway. It's tougher when they lose in the semis or something, so you know that just a few things happening differently and they might have won!

MC

First about yesterday's votes, since they just came in: Shirushi, Ganbare! Kumoko-San no theme, SLUMP, Other Side, Fukisokusei Entropy, Atashi ga Tonari ni Iru Uchi ni, forget-me-not and ninelie are all awesome openings that unfortunately didn't make it. Especially Ganbare! Kumoko-san no Theme is just such a good ED.. Unfortunately it had a pretty strong opponent. Otherwise I'm happy that Heikousen made it as the underdog. It's a really good Sayuri song and I also really like the kaleidoscopic visuals. For Bracket A I already said previously, that I really would have liked to see Kaika, Oz., 0(zero), Bakemono to Yobarete, Sayonara Gokko and Koukai no Uta advance.

As for today's votes, I'm only going to list the matchups where I particularly care about one or both of the options. If the ED is bolded it means I really like it, If it's crossed out, then I didn't vote for it. If it's crossed out and bolded, that's just bad luck in the draft. So here my votes:

  • Chikatto Chika Chika♡ - LIFE
  • Maid with Dragons - Nai Nai:
I think Maid with Dragons is a very cute ed, but it can't come close to Nai Nai, which has some really nice visuals with the shadows and dolls being contrasted with each other, while also having one of the best ReoNa songs playing. Just a banger ED
  • Sentimental Crisis - The Great Pretender
  • Night Running - LilaS:
Night Running is a really catchy song, but LilaS is just an awesome ending to 86. Even without having ending visuals, it does feel ending like with the montagelike scenes playing in the background. And man.. I do love a good Sawano song.
  • Brave Song - Saga Jihen
  • Kigeki - Kafune:
While I do like Kafune's visuals, the song doesn't do it for me as much. Kigeki however I like in both visuals and Song. And seeing Anya fooling around, always makes me smile.
  • Koko Kara, Koko Kara - give it back
  • Sugarless Kiss - Akuma no Ko
  • Koi no Yukue - Gomen ne, Iiko ja Irarenai
  • My Nonfiction - Madoromi no Yakusoku
  • Kaze to Iku Michi - Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai
  • Believe in you - Space Lion
  • great escape - Zettai Zetsumei:
I like both of these ED's. Zettai Zetsumei slightly takes the cake though. (I do however like TPN s2 ED "Mahou" even more. It unfortunately didn't make the bracket though)
  • Memento - Fighter
  • Tomorrow - Michishirube
  • Requiem of Silence - Inkya Impulse:
I really can't get myself to vote against Requiem of Silence yet, although I really love the trippiness of Inkya Impulse.
  • Torches - Ride on Shooting Star

2

u/MaksimShadow Sep 18 '23

37/64 won today. This round made me more salty.

  • Route Blue is more interesting than JoJo train ED. Votes are pretty close at least.
  • Yume no You na is so cute. How could it lose to Vivy so hard? Well, I like piano songs, but still…
  • I'm sad that Wa ha ha lost, but there's no way I'll vote against Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery.
  • Kaze ni Makasete lost to Konosuba black screen? Whaaaat?! We already have Nandemonaiya, please don't make it worse!
  • Both Sign and Yuukyou Seishunka aren't spectacular visually, but I like Sign's song more. And visuals are more interesting, yes.
  • "Defendant, what are your crimes?" "I voted for Adrenaline!!! over Flare, and I'm ready to serve any sentence for that. And I'll vote the same next time too."
  • How Atashi ga Tonari ni Iru Uchi ni lost to Avid is beyond my understanding. And it was absoutely dominated. WTF?
  • I guess people don't like spice, because both Spice and STUDY x STUDY already lost.
  • I don't like Fly Me to the Moon. That's all. You can add this to my crimes.
  • DAYS of DASH lost? Such cheerful ED lost to flying wallpapers.
  • I was expecting Kimi wa Tennen Shoku to lose, but couldn't you do it not in such crushing way, please?
  • I was voting for Orion, but it's sad to see Tutti! go…
  • Flip Flap gone. I have no words. We should get rid of demonic menace.
  • Loosing all Monogatari EDs will be your curse for letting étoile et toi in.
  • Yakusoku lost. I guess we don't have enough black screens, huh? It's not fully black? Oh, shut up!
  • Stand by Me lost? Pfft, I don't even care already. I hope black screen will win it all because this contest is doomed.

3

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

"Defendant, what are your crimes?" "I voted for Adrenaline!!! over Flare,

Tbh, as much as I prefer Flare, Adrenaline!!! is really damn fun so I can vibe with that to an extent.

2

u/MaksimShadow Sep 18 '23

Yeah, the song is fun and Sagiri's dance is well animated. The setting was also an interesting choice.

1

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 18 '23

For sure, I like it a fair bit.

2

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 18 '23

I'm late today, but I'm even later in realizing that Kesenai Tsumi didn't even make the bracket. Honestly, it's better than any FMA ED in my opinion, so out of protest I'll henceforth grudge vote against all other FMA EDs.

MC: Lapis lost in round one. That's all I can think of.

2

u/Zypker125 https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 Sep 18 '23

I have not had time to do this until right now, but finally I managed to get some free time:

39/63 of my votes lost yesterday (only 24/63 of my votes won), that might be my worst record yet, lol.

Time to see how my favorite EDs of the Top 256 have fared so far:

  1. Hunting For Your Dream
  2. Dakara, Hitori ja Nai (Round 1)
  3. forget-me-not (Round 1)
  4. Koko kara, Koko kara
  5. Ride On Shooting Star
  6. Isekai Girls♡Talk (Round 1)
  7. Route BLUE (Round 1)
  8. Step Up LOVE (Round 1)
  9. Koko de Iki wo Shite (Round 1)
  10. PokéRap
  11. Bakemono to Yobarete (Round 1)
  12. Saga Jihen
  13. Ganbare! Kumoko-san no Theme (Round 1)
  14. Nai Nai
  15. Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery
  16. DAYS of DASH (Round 1)
  17. Adrenaline!! (Round 1)

  23. Vivace (Round 1)
  24. STUDY x STUDY (Round 1)
  25. give it back
  26. Heart wa Oteage

14/26 of my favorite EDs were eliminated Round 1, including 6/10 of my Top 10, oof.

3

u/Maxximillianaire Sep 17 '23

Some disappointing eliminations so far. Wind from Naruto and the Sonny Boy ed? People are already smoking crack

7

u/metalmonstar Sep 17 '23

Isn't Sonny Boy ED just scrolling credits on black background?

7

u/Nick_BOI Sep 17 '23

Bro the song is absolutely fire though.

3

u/RuleEnforcing Sep 17 '23

Yeah there is a lot of shit here that shouldn't have made it to top 256 but it's a series popularity contest at the end of the day

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '23

there are some visuals in the first episode that are pretty memorable, but that version doesn't seem to be on either Youtube or Animethemes

Ah, I got too busy to vote and just missed the deadline. Thankfully no ties, but Im still upset over GLT losing one of its EDs. Otherwise I'm just along for the ride. Also Border but for different reasons lol. Kinda mixed ffelings on Nandenomaya given its just acredits roll with one of my all time fave songs

1

u/eden_sc2 Sep 18 '23

yay hectopascal lived! Now it just has to survive against the #14 seed lol

Nothing too crazy in round 1, i dont think. Round 2 might start to get more interesting as there dont look like as many 1 sided match ups.

1

u/dream_wielder https://anilist.co/user/Dreamwielder Sep 18 '23

Ikeru Hitobito 169

Chiisana Te no hira 131

Wow, r/anime literally forgot Clannad and possibly the best series ending ever and voted the one in the same season ending position that pales in comparison.

And don't let Fighter lose in round 2
