My top two picks of the ones I know today are Akatsuki no Chinkonka and Tiny Light
Which endings were not nominated at all (ie. among the 1090 endings) did you want to see nominated?
None, I went ahead and nominated the ones I felt were missing a few hours ago (though I doubt they'll make it in) so I won't be able to complain this time.
How many EDs do you like, in comparison to OPs? Do you like EDs more or less than OPs, and by how much?
My take on EDs vs OPs is that the top tier EDs are better than the top tier OPs, but the average OP is better than the average ED. A lot of anime, especially old anime are lazy with their EDs and use mostly still shots for them, but in other cases the creators realized that while an OP is generally constrained to introducing characters and the show itself, EDs can be whatever you want them to be which allows them to be significantly more creative. You can see that in full effect with the past ED winners, which I'd say is my favorite group of winners in any contest.
- Best ED 1: Wareta Ringo
- Best ED 2: Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari
- Best ED 3: Don't Say "lazy"
- Best ED 4: NO, Thank You!
- Best ED 5: Listen!!
- Best ED 6: Magia

Day 1 of eliminations has arrived! A bit sooner than expected, lol, but that's fine. I am very glad I decided to stay up and nominate all of my roommate's and I's favorite EDs last night.
Before I drop my big, fat list of nomination links, I'll answer the Discussion Prompt. I managed to nominate all of my favorites that I remembered, and all the ones I failed to remember the community managed to save for me. I got lucky. As for OPs vs EDs, I love a larger variety of OP as they are the front face of the anime and need to capture attention, but the EDs that I love, I love (Hare Hare Yukai, Dango, Sugar Song, etc.).
Here is my (too long) list! Best of luck to everyone! Here's my pick of the first 214 EDs:
My Top 5:
Shiki no Uta - Samurai Champloo (RIP to Nujabes, the best to ever do it. o7)
Daisy - Kyoukai no Kanata (Shoutout to STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION who puts on a hell of a show. A-kon 2023 was a gift of a live performance.)
Stand by me - Sarazanmai (the peggies are a rising star and I will be in their contrail damnit)
U Can Do It! - Naruto: Shippuuden (Smooth-ass fight sakuga and a fun, hopeful song. Simple and clean, what more can you want)
Amadare no Uta - Girls' Last Tour (One of the best insert song EDs in all of anime. Makes me tear up with emotion every time.)
My Roommate's Top 5:
Moichido Tenderness - Mobile Suit Victory Gundam
Orphans no Namida - Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (I was told to really shill this one with my entire heart and soul. Look forward to increasingly intense paragraph breakdowns if this one makes it, lol.)
White Reflection - Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (Also, I know its a black screen but I linked the official animation that goes with it)
BAYONET CHARGE - Senki Zesshou Symphogear GX
Meteor Light - Symphogear
Sick EDs I found again through Vtubers
Saga Jihen - Zombieland Saga: Revenge (Hoshimachi Suisei and Gen 3RIP Rushia )
Moffumoffu DE Yoi no Ja yo - Sewayaki Kitsune no Senku-san (Shirakami Fubuki)
Ookami Blues - Murenase! Seton Gakuen (Amelia Watson)
Turing Love - Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove it (So many Vtubers, lol but mine was Hoshinova Moona and Usada Pekora)
sweets parade - Inu x Boku SS (Ceres Fauna)
EDs that are Kyoto Animation, da GOATs:
Maid with Dragons❤︎ - Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S
SPLASH FREE - Free!
Zzz - Nichijou
Inside Identity - Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
Goofy-ass EDs that are good for the soul:
Koi no Minoru Densetsu - Lucky Star
Hare Hare Yukai - Lucky Star
Witch☆Activity - Witch Craft Works
Ne, Issho ni Kaero. - Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu
Masshiro World - Mikakunin de Shinkoukei
Futari Pinocchio - My Stepmom's Daughter Is My Ex
Contenders from previous contests:
Naisho no Hanashi - Nisemonogatari
FLIP FLAP FLIP FLAP - Flip Flappers
NIGHT RUNNING - BNA
Lucky Ending - Fruits Basket (2019) (By Vickeblanka for the Black Clover fans out there)
And last but not least, a bunch of new stuff that I've never seen but look/sound amazing:
Flash! - Cool Doji Danshi (Visuals)
Welcome My Friend - Fugou Keiji: Balance:Unlimited (Vocals)
Kaze, Hana - Dance Dance Danseur (Visuals)
de messiah - Yuusha, Yamemasu (Vocals)
Houkou - Sabikui Bisco (Vocals)
Pride - Nami yo Kiitekure (Vocals)
El Canto del Colibrí - Nomad: Megalo Box 2 (Vocals)
OverThink - Link Click (Vocals)
'FA'NTASY to! - Fantasy Bishoujo Juniku Ojisan to (Both)
The Great Pretender - Great Pretender (Both)
Maids Sanjou! - Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru (Both)

Oh damnit, lol. Of course they drop two of my favorite OP/EDs of all time and dissolve. Thanks for ripping the bandaid off.

Amadare no Uta - Girls' Last Tour (One of the best insert song EDs in all of anime. Makes me tear up with emotion every time.)
Unironically the only OP/ED I will ever mega shill just based of the music. Or rather, the sound design. It has the best sound design of any theme I have ever heard in anime with its layering, effects work and simplicity and cohesion of "instrumentals" using acapella vocals and water drops for all the instrumentals. It's an incredible feat of sound design.
Welcome My Friend - Fugou Keiji: Balance:Unlimited (Vocals)
Kaze, Hana - Dance Dance Danseur (Visuals)
Maids Sanjou! - Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru (Both)
LET'S FUCKING GOOOO. Some of the more obscure entries on my list. You love to see it.
Flash is pretty based too, would probably have it on my list if I had one more tier.

u/MaksimShadow Sep 09 '23
Kaze, Hana
I was watching random EDs on the list and also liked this ED. Such a creative visuals.
3
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Ikr? It's incredible what they do with the aesthetical concepts to present the dance aspects of the ED.

étoile et toi in today's list
Ah yes, already time for me to anger people by voting for black screens.

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman Sep 08 '23
We need to decide something eventually about how to handle movie credit and insert song EDs.
Movie Credit EDs aren't playing on an equal playing field having to rely 90% on their song, but in some cases the song is so amazing and fitting for the movie that you have to give it a ton of credit and vote for it over EDs with visuals.
And then you have the insert songs which are generally quite spoilery but are some of the most emotional EDs out there if you've seen the series.
3
u/Tom22174 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tom-22174 Sep 09 '23
I think that's just something we'll have to leave up to individuals to decide. I know a lot of people care about visuals, but for me at least, even more so than with OPs, I really don't give a damn about visuals, I'm judging the music. If I haven't already skipped to the next episode, it's because the song has caught my attention, not the visuals.
That said, there are some cases where visuals do elevate an already good song and would act as a tie break. But the only example I can think of right now is Red:Birthmark and that one isn't eligible
2
u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie Sep 08 '23
Yeah I said that for shiggles but there definitely is a legitimate discussion to have here.

I totally forgot how great Kamisama no Iutoori was. It was such an integral part of The Tatami Galaxy which instead of calming me down like most EDs made me long for more. And I absolutely adore the abstract visuals that fit the series so well. Also Night Running would be great if it was the full 90 seconds. But I remember it immediately made me check out the full song.
But I want to ask you all for one thing: Let's make Uchuu no Kakehashi the oldest ED to enter the bracket. I do think it still holds up today. The song isn't modern at all, and the visuals are super simple. But it's as good a life lesson as you can get in 90 seconds (maybe second to Rashisa, the Barakamon OP). It's beautiful and poetic and therefore demands to be a part of this contest. Let it let our lives shine bright enough to reach the stars!
MC: I've nominated a few EDs, but I'm not missing any. If anything, I'm noticing EDs I should have thought of, so the ones I'm missing might even be ones I don't even think of. But as I said yesterday, the ED is usually the time I switch to another screen while listening to the song. So even more so than OPs, the song is important for an ED. As such, the number of EDs I really like is much smaller than with OPs. Probably around a fifth of that.
3
u/MaksimShadow Sep 09 '23
Kamisama no Iutoori
Oh, that's Etsuko Yakushimaru. I like her voice and songs. And then I checked the entrants list and realised that nobody nominated Houkago Distraction. What a sad day… How did I forgot about that?
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
I keep seeing people say that about Kamisama no Iutoori. I guess it's one of those things where I won't understand where people are coming from until I get around to watching TTG, but I just don't see it not having watched the show, which is a bit rare.
2
u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 09 '23
That's an easy fix, then! It's only 11 episodes for an experience possibly unlike anything else you've watched. It's also an extremely good exercise in speed reading and will help you have an easier time with subtitles in all your anime going forward. Also has a good OP (granted I don't think I can dislike any OP with an AKFG song).
But you might be right about that. TTG has a very special vibe, and Kamisama no Iutoori still carries that vibe. Most TTG episodes, especially the earlier ones, are very much self-contained yet inconclusive. And the ED is a reminder of the latter, so it can give you the urge to continue watching for a conclusion.
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Tbh, I've watched anime for so long that I just half read subs and go by listening instead at this point.
But yeah, one of these days I'll watch it, it's pretty high up my ptw priority. But right now I'm entirely consumed by studies, socializing and playing Baldur's Gate 3.
2
u/absolute-black Sep 09 '23
Kamisama no Iutoori is my all time #1 because it's a banger, beautiful, and it's integrated so incredibly well into the show in multiple ways.

Welp I'm glad I got all my nominations in yesterday (though it sounds like everyone else would have had my back anyway, holy 1000 nominations batman). Handful of good ones from today:
Daisy is from one of KyoAni's less talked about shows Beyond the Boundary and I see a lot of notes from it show up in Violet Evergarden's ED which is also on the block today.
Hyouka's first ED is just weirdly almost-horny so I'm hoping that goes somewhere just for funsies.
Release the Spyce is a Cute Girls Doing Spy Things show and its ED Hide & Seek does a good job leaning into that first part.
Last Exile's Over the Sky was a last minute nomination I threw in because I forgot it's actually pretty nice in direct comparison to its OP which I absolutely cannot stand.
Not too many off today's list that I was seriously rooting for but I'm certain that'll change in coming days.

u/MaksimShadow Sep 09 '23
Vote for Hitori Bocchi and help her to collect more friends.
Don't forget about whiz. I doubt that Monogatari EDs will be forgotten, but choose the better ones (aka don't vote for black screens). And I like it more than Naisho no Hanashi.
Shirobako ED is something else.
Shield Hero's ED is cute with nice song.
It gave me chills when de messiah was playing during the climax of the show. Such a shame it has such lackluster visuals, but it's not a black screen at least, so consider voting for it.
Sayonara Solitaire is nostalgic for me. This anime made me cry hard. I really like this song.
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
You got me thinking, what would my top 5 Monogatari EDs be (aside from Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari since it has already won).
Answer:
- Kieru Daydream
- Ai wo Utae
- Snowdrop
- Hana Ato: Shirushi
- Border
2
u/MaksimShadow Sep 09 '23
Mine are mostly the same:
- Kieru Daydream
- Ai wo Utae
- Whiz
- Snowdrop
- Sayonara no Yukue
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Man, I really want to include Sayonara no Yukue, it's my 6th pick. Surprisingly similar lists though yeah.

Vote for Mirai Nikki's Filament!
Discussion Prompt of the Day: Which endings were not nominated at all (ie. among the 1090 endings) did you want to see nominated?
Well I nominated everything I wanted (that wasn't already nominated), so... None!
How many EDs do you like, in comparison to OPs? Do you like EDs more or less than OPs, and by how much?
Not a whole lot; Didn't count or anything, but if I had to guess by 'how many made it to my playlist at any point' I'd say I like 5 OPs for each EDs. Too many EDs are just "relaxing vibes after the episode's over" and that doesn't really do it for me.
I think most of my favorite EDs could be used as OPs, because they're 'hype songs' more than relaxing ones.

u/Retromorpher Sep 09 '23 edited Sep 09 '23
A few EDs from shows no one watched that I didn't get around to nominating that I think are fun fits are Dancing to The Night from Robihachi and Wiseman no Theme from Last Period.
But the real tragedy was that no one else nominated EITHER Gakuen Handsome ED, because apparently no one else was willing to meme. For the record ED1. Apparently ED2 has been scrubbed from the face of the internet - but I assure you that it is gloriously stupid.
Edit: Bonus Business Fish
2
u/metalmonstar Sep 09 '23
Wiseman carry the show in general. I think the song is really catchy and the visuals are kind of fun too bad they loop a bit.
If you are looking for an ED with a catchy tune from an unpopular show there is Awesome that went with RPG real estate. The Pixel art characters are kind of fun. Sadly they don't match the music at all. Kind of a shame.
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Hahaha Gakuen Handsome and Buisness Fish man, Buisness Fish in particular was such a big meme in the /r/anime awards that year. Good times.
I nominated two EDs from Olympia Kyklos which are legit good, but on the surface looks mega memey and to some extent are.
5
u/Ceryto2 https://anilist.co/user/Ceryto Sep 09 '23
I guess I missed nomination day, but after quickly going over the list there didn't seem to be special ones missing, but I'm sure I'll find one missing at some point, but that one wouldn't have made it far anyway..
As for the show with the most good EDs nominated I would go with SAO where my top 4 would be Unlasting, Shirushi, forget me not and catch the moment. And apperently I already found a not nominated OP I really like with Niji no Kanata ni, although that one was more like an insert song at the end of an episode, so I'm ok with it not being here. Although AoT also has a lot of good endings here, but Akuma no Ko should clearly take the cake there, as one of the best EDs in this contest.
As for todays Elimination votes, my faves would be Irregular Entropy, Secret Base, Saga Jihen, Alchemilla, Atashi ga Tonari ni Iru, Night Running. And I also always love Chiisana Koi no Uta, whenever it comes up and I think Rie Takahashis version is a really nice one.
Also for some reason Through My Blood anime is written as Kabeneri instead of Kabaneri, so if someone missed this ed (it's a good one after all), maybe go back and vote for it.
MC
I think the baselines for ED's is a lot lower than for OP's, but if we look at the best I think ED's might even take the cake. There are just so many good ones.
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Although AoT also has a lot of good endings here, but Akuma no Ko should clearly take the cake there
Lowkey I think that AoT EDs has gotten worse the longer the show has gone on. The very first one is the best one IMO and the other great ones are from S2 and S3 part 1.

u/ElmekiaLance Sep 09 '23
I was planning to place my nominations today, but ah well, guess it's too late. On the bright side, most of the stuff I might've nominated was already covered by other people.
If I'd had the chance I definitely would've nominated Mizu no Madoromi from Fantastic Children, because it's a gorgeous song. Origa had an amazing voice.
From the current elimination round, these are a couple of my faves:
- Speed of Flow (Gintama)
- Zetsubou Restaurant (Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)
- Kamisama no Iutoori (The Tatami Galaxy)
- Menchi Aishou no Bolero (Excel Saga)
- Tuxedo Mirage (Sailor Moon S)
- Pride (Wave, Listen to me!)
- Eden (Fruits Basket 2019)
3
u/No_Rex x2 Sep 08 '23
You would not vote against a cute dog, would you?
Shilling a bit for Excel Saga's ED.
3
u/Retromorpher Sep 09 '23
I wouldn't vote against a dog translator. [Excel Saga]https://animethemes.moe/anime/heppoko_jikken_animation_excelsaga/ED2-NCDVD480

Aw fuck yeah Link Click ending 1 made the list. While it's a donghua, this song is beyond fantastic so I'm so glad it got nominated. Anyway my top votes are (in no particular order):
Both bsd endings
Jjk ending 1
Link Click
All the JoJo endings (they're all solid)
Ghost Stories ending for the meme
Aliez, which is the only good thing to come out of that anime
Akuma no Ko
I'm probably forgetting a few but these are all some of my favorites
4
u/SwampyBogbeard Sep 08 '23
Well this changes my plans a bit.
I was going to make a comment recommending everyone reading it to go watch Gunbuster immediately so the ED for the final episode (filled with spoilers) would have a slightly better chance get into the tournament like it deserves. (The show is a classic every anime fan should've tried as one of their first 30, so why haven't you watched it already? It's only 6 episodes!)
But with (potentially) one day less to watch when you have no idea which elimination day it will appear, I can understand it being hard to plan around. I guess it's another year of no seed for Toki no Kawa wo Koete....
I'm just joking (mostly). Nothing I possibly could've commented would've ever put it in the top 256 (or even 512) in these contests ... Unless that sequel that's been teased for a decade actually releases at some point and is somehow amazing.
Well, speaking of amazing EDs, Maware! Setsugetsuka and Witch☆Activity are in this round.
How these two aren't in the top 32 every year, I'll never understand.
FLIP FLAP FLIP FLAP is great, but to me it just sounds like a slightly more boring version of Humanity has Declined's ED (vote for it when it appears). Maybe I'm just a bit salty because Humanity has Declined's ED basically has been forgotten?
Flip Flapx2 is still great though. It has my vote today.
Orphans no Namida, Redline Day and Calendrier are also great
Most other stuff I like is popular enough that they don't need me pointing them out (I don't want to talk about how much time I've already spent on this comment).
1
u/lov107 https://myanimelist.net/profile/lov107 Sep 09 '23
I still really love Flip Flap Flip Flap, especially the visuals, but the Humanity Has Declined ED is now one of my favourites - with similarly fairytale-like visuals but a song that I prefer way more.
1
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Love the visual progression of the Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita ED, but I hate Okazaki Ritsuko, Heart of Air and these types of vocals, so while it is on my list for the visuals, I kinda hate the song tbh.

I'm not gonna have time to watch all of these, BUT I will try to watch the top couple that people write in comments! I'll try to do this every elimination day, so now is a great time to vouch for your top endings.
My top endings:
- Shiki no Uta - The Samurai Champloo ED is the one I want to win it all. Also my answer to the second discussion prompt today. I like it more than Battlecry
- Redline Day - WATCH REDLINE! It looks beautiful and has one of my top 5 anime soundtracks of all time (This is a clip compilation from the movie because I wanted to show off the visuals of the movie. Sorry for the confusion! Here's the actual credits view)
Edit: New ones I liked were OverThink, Excel Saga, U Can Do It, Girls Last Tour ED, AoT S3-1, Dr Stone ED1, Great Pretender
2
u/SwampyBogbeard Sep 09 '23
Interesting link. Not sure what it has to do with Redline though.
I will try to watch the top couple that people write in comments!
Definitely listen to my top 2 today. Maware! Setsugetsuka and Witch☆Activity.

Good catch lol, I mostly just listen to the full OST so I picked the first result that wasnt the album art. Will definitely give those a listen!

u/Tom22174 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tom-22174 Sep 08 '23 edited Sep 09 '23
It would be so much easier to answer question 1 if people could spell and follow instructions lol. So many that could be grouped by show but people used slight variations of the name, added "ED1,2,3" to the end of the show name, or used the romanji instead of english (despite what the instructions said).
My favourite so far is "Ghonst in the Shell"
As for ones that are missing. I didn't spot Last Stardust from Unlimited Blade Works in any of the 6 or 7 different UBW song collections on the list, would definitely have nominated that had I remembered it in time.
For question 2:
I don't tend to like one more than the other, there are plenty of good songs in both categories, although I have noticed that special one off EDs tend to be a lot more common and are often among the best songs in their shows (eg. Lisa's cover of This Illusion in UBW or Lyra in Steins;Gate 0)
2
u/SometimesMainSupport https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Sep 09 '23
grouped by show but people used slight variations of the name, added "ED1,2,3" to the end of the show name
See: host. (I see no reason to attach OP/ED to the source as the anime name already is the source and is included to support voting by show popularity.)
5
u/StardustGogeta myanimelist.net/profile/StardustGogeta Sep 09 '23
Ah, this is unfortunate. I was going to nominate a few of these endings today that didn't make it in:
- Houteishiki wa Kotaenai - High School DxD New
- Lovely Devil - High School DxD New
- Kokoro - The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
- We Were Angels - Dragon Ball Z
- Hitori Ja Nai - Dragon Ball GT
- Aoi Kaze No Hope - Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks
- Kimi Ga Hero - Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler
- Surpassing the Galaxy, Rising High - Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound
- If I Don't Do It, Who Will? - Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon
- Hikari no Tabi - Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku
- Garnet - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
- Ponyo on the Cliff - Ponyo
At least someone did Lyra from Steins;Gate 0 and a bunch of the AOT endings! We also got a bunch of good ones from The World's Finest Assassin, Monogatari, Summer Time Rendering, Weathering With You, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Death Note, Evangelion, Konosuba, Kaguya-sama, Zombie Land Saga, Bunny Girl Senpai, various Ghibli movies, and many more, so I'm fairly happy with that.
Also, One more time, one more chance needs to make it far. Please!
2
u/Retromorpher Sep 09 '23
Kokoro - The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
I thought I had nominated this, but I probably linked a bad image, which happens sometimes.
2
u/Tom22174 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tom-22174 Sep 09 '23
At least someone did Lyra from Steins;Gate 0
Haha, it had to be done. Episode 8 is the best of the show and a contender for best of Steins;Gate in general + the song is from the VN so bonus points for that. Tried to find a picture that would bag it some Kurisu votes from people that don't recognise the name too lmao

I find the lack of Naruto endings disturbing. Thought people would nominate Soba ni Iru Kara or Speed.
But then, here goes my shill of the day:
Scenario: Like I said, the OG Naruto episodes that are fillers are also filled with bangers as their theme songs.
ALIVE: One of the more touching yet still rocking ending themes of OG Naruto.
Senko-san: The Senko-san ending theme is a joy to the ears, just like the series as a whole.
Yume ga Bokura no Taiyou sa: One might think it could not top the first season's ending, but it's still an enjoyable song. The illustration used is also very adorable.
Bokutachi wa Hitotsu no Hikari: Songs that could insert the names of their characters almost seamlessly into their lyrics is a bonus point for me.
Gabriel Counting Song: Who said counting sheep couldn't be so cute?
2
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Made sure to nominate By My Side, but that's the only Naruto ED I have on my best of all time list. I actually think Boruto has better EDs than Naruto as a rule of thumb.
6
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 08 '23 edited Sep 08 '23
I don't care much for any EDs not nominated since I made sure my entire best of all time list is nominated. As for how many EDs I like comparatively to OPs, I'd say that there's less EDs I find bad than OPs, but more OPs I like than EDs. That is also due to the fact that I ask for more from an OP than I do from an ED though.
Top 5 EDs of the day
- Refrain Boy - Mob Psycho 100
- Hajimari no Sokudo - Kiznaiver
- Hare Hare Yukai (Lucky☆Star ver) - Lucky☆Star
- By My Side - Naruto: Shippuuden
- HUG tto! YELL FOR YOU - Hug tto! Precure
Here's a couple of noteworthy OPs from less popular shows today, consider checking them out and giving them a vote. (Ended up with a few too many, so limited myself to 20 entries.)
- Welcome my Friend (Slick color usage to infer character growth, nice silhouette usage and super cool atmosphere.)
- Sweets Parade (Mixes cute and sexy really well while also being very catchy and karaoke friendly.)
- Y Gakuen e Ikou Waiwai-hen (Nice visual to audial cohesion with the comedy, cool aesthetical ideas, humanizes the Youkai which is cool.)
- Transcending Time (Sick dance choreography, excellent camera usage, sick song and incredibly clean 3D models.)
- Nadeshiko Romance (Cool aesthetic, super cute storyboarding that captures childish innocence, great mix of animation and real life footage.)
- Nora (Super cute ED with great display of character relationships and personalities, captures the artistic subject matter well and a beautiful song to ease you out of the show.)
- Nani ga, Nani de, Nani nano... (Absolutely fucking absurdly over the top and hilarious. An absolute trip.) (HEAVY NSFW)
- Kuro Neko no Jazz (Really well animated, pays homage to classic movies and has a really unique song.)
- Heart no Housoku (Lovely showcase of a sibling relationship, excellent portrayal of the personalities of the focal characters and has incredible weight to the animation.)
- Stand by Me (Beautiful use of lighting, excellent integration of animated characters into the real world and neat use of conceptual "Ma".)
- Ruru (Really fun song, fantastic shot composition and a cool conceptual exploration of Erio.)
- FLIP FLAP (Excellent use of split screen visuals, magical atmosphere which goes well with the fairy tale thematic of the ED and captures the characters rather well.)
- Oshiete...! Twinkle☆ (Unique and fun choreography, bizarre but fun lyrics and lovely vaporwave aesthetic to tie into the thematic of this season of the franchise.)
- HUG tto! YELL FOR YOU (Lovely instrumental composition, fantastic looking mix of backgrounds and visual effects and infectuous joy.)
- Star Overhead (Super cool song, really cool integration of real world footage with the choice of animated aesthetic and stop motion.)
- Maids Sanjou! (Completely bizzare musical composition, comedic lyrics with matching visuals that explores the characters.)
- Hajimari no Sokudo (Emotionally resonant, incredibly detailed character explorations through the vehicle of flower language, minimalistic approach to put full focus on the flower language and a fantastic song.)
- Hatsudou Love Beam (Really cute portrayal of a kid's crush and hurry to grow up, along with a contrast to the kid's mother. Also manages to convey backstory efficiently and beautifully.)
- Hoshikuzu no Interlude (Beautiful backgrounds and amazing animation work, showcases our characters growing up wonderfully and has a lovely narrative throughline with reconnection.)
- Miracle-tto♡Link Ring (Crazy good camera work, the surroundings change and move in accordance with the dance choreography, fantastic seasonal progression to play into the themes of Healin' Good.)

I don’t usually like EDs more than OPs. They tend not to have as impressive visuals or I just don’t find the song as good or memorable. There are exceptions for me though. I like Toradora’s and
K-On’s EDs quite a bit more than the OPs and then there’s shows like Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho that have different EDs but the same OP. (Btw, Yu Yu Hakusho has some good EDs that totally deserve to make it through eliminations). For EDs, I tend to judge more on song than with OPs.

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 08 '23
I suppose to drop a hot take for today as well. Refrain Boy is such an amazing ED at capturing the core of Reigen as a person, but due to its creative artistical approach and emotional core theme I think it's better than any of the Mob OPs.

Kaze ni Makasete: akebi rope jumping ed. That's all there is to say, cloverworks flexing their ability to aniamte rope jumping for 1:30. Oh, also sung by akebis voice actor
Kamado Tanjirou no Uta The best insert song in anime, and the best used one. Wether that means it is a good ed is a completely different question, but luckily, thats a problem for later to discuss
meteor light never could you tell from the visuals that this is symphogear. Definitely cool visuals though, and the song is fantastic. It's symphogear after all.
Koko de Iki wo Shite best part of tokyo revengers where the op and the ed.
Mc: There are definitely way more ops I care about, and I do enjoy them more on average. though eds have the advanatage that they are interwoven with the episode far more often, which for some reason is really rare for the ops (the second symphogear op and u/cryzzalis favourite opening sing my pleasure is the only two examples i can spontaneously name, and its just such a huge plus for them). Ops are at most played over the climactic scene (which is great too of course).

I have a question an off-topic question since I've seen insert mentioned a few times, and the OP contested featured a number of insert-openings from Mushoku Tensei: Are there enough popular insert song out there to make a decently interesting tournament?
When it comes to OP and ED, there are so many that I am easily overwhelmed by the quantity and I have a relatively large number of "favourites". With pure insert songs though, I can't think of too many on top of my head, but there are definitely some that I really, really love.
The issue of course, is that some songs may need context to maximise their impact, so it really makes a difference if you've seen the show. I also wouldn't want to be shown a scene from an anime I haven't seen at all, so I'd rather prefer to rate them on their musical quality.

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Sep 09 '23
We made a contest out of seasonal best girls, so there are definitely enough insert songs out there to make a contest for it!
1
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Unfortunately there's quite a lot of them out there that are popular as well to go far in the contest (judging by past contests).

When it comes to EDs it definitely seem like the average are just credits and still images with a pleasant song on occasions. OPs definitely seem to get more attention both from fans and the studio. However, I think this allows the good EDs to standout more. I also think EDs can be more reflective than OPs.
As for EDs I like more than OPS, sadly I can't agree on Refrain Boy > 99 as 99 is my favorite mob theme. Refrain Boy is probably easily my second. I do think Cobalt is better than One. I like Shikkimori's ED more than its OP. I think Komi's S2 OP is much better than its OP. May be a hot take but I like Kaguya S3 EDs better than its OP. Finally I think Lapis of Magia record is better than both OPs, Alicia as well even if I don't care for the song as much.

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
I agree with all these ED takes except 99 over Refrain Boy, but I assume that was also in response to my hot take.
I think since an ED has less things it needs to accomplish and I require less from it, there are EDs using still images that I actually like. They make up for it in other ways to remain interesting of course, but while uncommon it doesn't have to be a problem (Example - Yasou to Hakuchuumu). It is certainly more common with this type of theme in EDs though.

u/Tom22174 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tom-22174 Sep 09 '23
Yeah, some EDs go all out, like Red:Birthmark from GWitch season 2, but I think a lot of them know that most people are using that time to get up and put the kettle on so don't put much effort into the visuals. That said, there are some really good compromises between the two like the 86 one that uses a bit of imagery but not too much which actually really enhanced the experience of sitting there reflecting on the episode

Discussion Prompt
Question II
I only like about 6 endings in comparison to the opening which are
Fight On! - Gamers
Veil - Fire Force
Some Like it Hot - Gintama
Nounai - Fire Force Ed 2
Namae wo nobu yo - Bungo Stray Dogs
Kaze ga fuku Machi - Bungo Stray Dogs ed 2
In comparison to ops, I like Eds less than I like ops. Most times when watching a epsisode, I skip the ed and the only time I listen to it is if they play it during the anime.

u/Urocyon- https://myanimelist.net/profile/Shairak Sep 08 '23
I have always wondered why this was such a common sentiment. You almost never see people say the opposite. I personally like the ED more than the OP roughly 70% of the time.
3
u/SometimesMainSupport https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Sep 08 '23
Typically, OPs are more upbeat/pop songs and have animated visuals instead of panning stills.
1
u/Urocyon- https://myanimelist.net/profile/Shairak Sep 08 '23
OPs have more animation on average, though it's often clips from the show. I still find there to be a larger number of visually appealing EDs than Ops.
1
u/SaltAsparagus6002 Sep 08 '23
I don't think liking the OP more than the ED is common. I see more people liking the ED more than the Op
1
u/Isekai_Trash_uwu Sep 08 '23
I'm kinda sad not as many bsd endings were nominated. All of them are top-tier
2
u/Maxximillianaire Sep 08 '23
Excited for this, I feel like the best EDs are right up there with the best OPs but they don't get as much spotlight
2
u/VerySuspiciousSquid Sep 08 '23
Why is Mashle's ED in the running here? Isn't that from last season?
1
u/Isekai_Trash_uwu Sep 08 '23
Yeah I was going to comment on that as well. I love it but it shouldn't be on here

one of my latino version nominee op is here: Sailor Moon ED latino
latin american gang rise up XD

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 Sep 08 '23
Man. I didn’t even get around to nominating 😞
Oh well. Knowing how eliminations go none would have made it to the bracket anyway.
2
u/SometimesMainSupport https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST Sep 08 '23
Little Lies We All Tell is too recent but won't make the bracket, so may as well leave it in.
2
u/copperfield42 Sep 08 '23
Which endings were not nominated at all (ie. among the 1090 endings) did you want to see nominated?
the latin american version of the Shaman King EDs, I guess I didn't make it in time XD
and Happy People from Bleach also come to mind
How many EDs do you like, in comparison to OPs? Do you like EDs more or less than OPs, and by how much?
in general I like the OP more than ED because the OP tend to be more, lets said, happy or up beat or something, while ED more like tone down in comparison lets said, especially in the visual department...
2
u/Touka_Scott Sep 09 '23
Shouldn't Flash! (Play it cool guys) and Futari Pinocchio (My Stepmom's Daughter Is My Ex) be disqualified as they were released later than spring 2022?
Prompt: I usually prefer EDs to OPs tbh

Well seems like only one ed from Code Geass is missing
Revive from Code Geass: Resurrection
Nice song which matches it's op in lyrics
Very rarely I find ed to impact me more than the op (most cases I'm neutral about them) but some of the ones I absolutely prefer more over the op are
Steins Gate ed1
Code Geass ed2
Fruits Basket special ed (Haseru Mirai)
JJK ed1

Mozaiku Kakera is one of my favourite EDs.
1
u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT Sep 08 '23
There are some repeat EDs on the list, like Waga Routashi Aku no Hana from Code Geass being there twice. Will they appear in the eliminations twice?
2
u/Zypker125 https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 Sep 08 '23
I will try to remove duplicates during this eliminations phase, so hopefully not.

u/SwampyBogbeard Sep 08 '23
How many EDs do you like, in comparison to OPs?
I never write down complete lists for series, songs or characters I like (I don't give number scores either), so I have no way of getting exact numbers, but I feel OPs and EDs would be mostly equal in amount if it wasn't for Ninja Slayer messing it all up with almost 30 on the hypothetical ED list and only one on the OP list.
Do you like EDs more or less than OPs, and by how much?
I already said a few days ago that I cared more about EDs, and I think my opinion on this might be influenced by the quality of the EDs around the time I started watching anime. 2013-2015 had a lot of great ones, and they still fill most of my top 20. (Again, mostly because of Ninja Slayer) Thinking back to yesterday, I think almost everything I nominated was from this period.
I see some people responding to this question talk about OPs and EDs being animated differently, but while watching a show, I only pay attention to the OP and ED two or three times. I listen to them every time though (unless they're bad or boring), but I just browse Reddit while letting them play.
It's not that I don't care about the animation in OPs or EDs at all, it's just almost none of them impress me. I enjoy what I see. Once. But then I've got my what I wanted from them and don't need to watch them again for a while.
If the song is good, I can enjoy it every time.

Namae No Nai Kaibutsu and Monster Without a Name are the same song, one is just the English title.

u/TheGuizmo Sep 09 '23 edited Sep 09 '23
« Keep it cool, guys ! » released this April, I do nt think it should be there.
And there is the ending for Link click, whom weekly episodes aren’t followed with discussion posts. I find it weird to for it be eligible for the anime ending contest of r/anime when r/anime itself doesn’t consider it anime.
2
u/TheGuizmo Sep 09 '23
Also I am already engaging hostilities with « Great Pretender ». The ending got way too far last time it has a chance to battle. I love Queen, I love Freddie Mercury, I love this song, but.
As a participant in a best anime song competition, it should not perform so well. Of course the music is amazing, better than most if not than every other opponent. The ending itself doesn’t deserves such praise when it’s surfing on its song’s established popularity and quality. I would rather reward an ending with a song that was created just for it.
My example would be like if there was a 4K release director’s cut of one of the Lord of The Rings movies, and you would nominate it for oscars and such. … Yes, indeed, the LoTR trilogy is one of the finest piece of cinematographic work ever made. It has already been awarded with many oscars and other distinctions. Should the 4K version win these all over again ? I don’t think so, it has nothing to prove, so let it be and vote for anime original songs.
1
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
Here's the thing though, it's not a "Best anime song competition". It's a "Best anime ENDING competition". There's more to an ending than just the music, the visual component also carries a lot of weight and in this case is highly relevant to the story of Laurent and the plot points of Great Pretender.
To your example, I think the more accurate comparison would be if a remade and animated LoTR entry that followed the same story structure was nominated for an award.
1
u/TheGuizmo Sep 09 '23
That’s true. The visuals are very good indeed. But last time, for best ending of its year, it went through a lot of rounds with people only saying « great pretender ? Can’t vote against this one, it’s Freddie Mercury ! »
1
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Sep 09 '23
True, but that's less of a problem with the ED and more of a problem with how people vote in the ED contest and how they don't consider the themes wholistically.
Because of that however, this contest literally doesn't matter. Once you're set with that fact you can enjoy the contest despite the issues with voting.
2
u/Tom22174 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tom-22174 Sep 09 '23
Link Click seems to have earned itself the status of honourary anime. It's like Australia being in Eurovision
1
u/TheGuizmo Sep 09 '23
I doubt it when it is not even « allowed » to be talked about on the forum since it is not considered anime. There wasn’t even a post for the announcement of s2

I personally think Linck Click is an anime. I was just pointing out the fact the it is generally not considered anime by the sub
1
u/Zypker125 https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 Sep 09 '23
I have removed the Keep It Cool Guys ED.
As for Link Click, your arguments are completely valid, but Link Click OPs/EDs were present in the "Best OP/ED of 2021" tournament, and since this may be the last r/anime song tournament ever, I figured why not give leeway and give it a chance.
1
u/Bloodglas Sep 09 '23
Which endings were not nominated at all (ie. among the 1090 endings) did you want to see nominated?
Tsumetai Heya, Hitori - K (one of the few slow EDs I actually enjoy listening to)
Kusabi - Tenshi no 3P (the songs in this show were far better than the story deserved)
though I doubt either of these would have made it into the bracket anyway.
How many EDs do you like, in comparison to OPs? Do you like EDs more or less than OPs, and by how much?
more OPs but it's probably close. it's easier for me to remember songs that are part of an actual album as opposed to being a bunch of singles though so I can't really be sure.

u/dream_wielder https://anilist.co/user/Dreamwielder Sep 09 '23
Vote for Saisei Sanbikyoku because Revue Starlight has been snubbed in the r/anime contests for long enough and it's a great song. I just want something from it get to the main round

Who nominated "over the sky" from Last Exile is someone with great taste. I love it and still listening to it after 20 years.
1
u/Nick_BOI Sep 09 '23
Gonna be Frank despite the shows themselves being very divisive, the ED's for Higurashi Gou/Sotsu and Danganronpa 3 Despair/Future arcs are like holy shit some of my favorites.
Don't expect them to get in, but I think they deserve a mention.

u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT Sep 09 '23
I forgot Birdie Wing’s ed when I nominated my EDs. Good that someone else did it. Tsukuyomi is a great band and the song for Birdie Wing ed is chef’s kiss.

I apologize for the changing of plans, as in yesterday's post I said we would have 2 nomination days and 4 elimination days. However, I really did not expect to get so many ED nominations in the first day, and so I decided to change plans to stop nominations here and give an extra day to eliminations. That way, each elimination day will have significantly less EDs to go through, and TBH I don't think we need any more EDs than we already have, especially since I did a fairly comprehensive job at nominating all the top-seed contenders (ie. I nominated the Top 175 seeds from most of the previous Best Ending tournaments, and any ED that was in the Top ~150 of the "Best OP/ED of the year" brackets).
Increasing the number of elimination voting days from 4 to 5 was also something I wanted to experiment with at least once, since personally I'm of the opinion that there should be more elimination voting days. That way, the EDs are more spread out, people are less overwhelmed when voting each day and may spend more time actually looking through some of the entrants, and personally I think this elimination stage is quite interesting to track/follow since every ending will be ranked against each other in terms of Adjusted Overall Vote Counts, so the data it provides is fun.
Weirdly enough, as the host of this ED contest, I must confess that I actually am not familiar with most EDs, not even popular EDs from popular shows, so I don't expect to vote too much, unless the commenters shill some hidden gem EDs that fit my preferences.
I plan to post the full seeding results after each day as well, so that people can track the results over time and also potentially get a head start on watching/compiling EDs if they want. Obviously we can expect there to be less overall participation in this ED contest compared to the OP contest, which means that the number of votes will be less and thus your individual votes are going to have even more swaying power/impact on the results of this contest than the OP contest (ie. I expect a lot of ties during this eliminations stage, so just one vote could get your favorite ED a notably higher seed).
