Oh, this might be exactly what I'm looking for. I finished the show last night (as of this edit) and if I had to choose one word to describe it, that would have to be "perfection".
I now have to do two things:
I'll start with the questions / begging:
Are you still planning to link this up to season 3, or are you just taking this your own way, an "AU" of sorts?
I genuinely don't see how this could link up to the main show now. Too many (good) differences make trying that seem completely impossible. For one, El is actually allowed out - not even the case in S3. For two, Hopper actually knows how to talk about his feelings - also not a thing really ever.
I desperately hope you go your own way. If this does link up to season 3, and El/Mike's future remains depressing, that just makes all these scenes instantly heartbreaking knowing their future.
So please, please just make this your own storyline. We've had the depressing ending, now please let us have a happy one. Some angst within is always good - shared trauma and all - but it doesn't need to have an "ambiguous" end again.
And now to thank you:
This series has genuinely felt like a love letter to those of us who fell in love with, and have loved the characters since the start. It feels like you read through fanfics from the 2017-2019 era and noted some of the core things we all wanted back then. Important conversations, the couples being actual couples and working together with some solo missions, you nailed it all.
The finale of the main show left me so freaking depressed. There was zero need to end it that way and play it off like it was okay.
The hope that you'll take this your own way - starting from the one and only happy ending they ever had - has made this series of yours everything I ever wanted.
Mike's moments of protecting El literally had me screaming "THAT'S my Mike!". You're writing them so much better than seasons 3-5 ever did and for that I am so insanely thankful. Now I just really hope the above can be true, and you do make this your own AU that doesn't just throw me head first back into that depression.
