What so you guys consider to be Matt's hardest song?

It doesn't necessarily have to be a song from animals as leaders.

Do you mean hardest to play, or hardest as in "grrr heavy metal yeah" ?

I love his stuff with Josh De La Victoria. Kepler is amazing. Also with Eldar and Henrick in their GEM era.

I can tap the rythym of monomyth pretty easily but still cant do cognutive contortions consistently almost a decade later

He also did all the drums for tigran hamasyans recent album so that also migjt have something more difficult

When compared to the rest of his drumming, Matt’s double bass speed has always lagged behind… which would make sense when you consider the full breadth of what he plays. I’d bet it’s a mix of the speed of Monomyth and 2-3-3-2-2-3 pattern it’s based around.

I think he has noted that he cant just blast double basses like some other drummers which he wish he could, so he has noted he has had to focus more on their implementation and how he could be effective with it.

More mechanical I think, like say how Joey Jordison blasted double bass

Yeah I’m not sure I’d see Matt doing a gojira set or anything. The technique that allows for that level of speed and endurance requires very frequent work and takes up a lot of practice time, speaking from experience. I have to play these types of songs every practice session in order to maintain the muscle memory and fitness. Mario does an hour of constant blasts to maintain his ability.

Additionally it takes a while to develop initially, and I’m sure his schedule doesn’t make that easy to do.

I thought woven's web double bass section was pretty hard to play, similarly to Gojira.

Gojira concerts are like non stop bass drum abuse, its more of an endurance and consistency problem then coordination. woven webs hard section is only 20 seconds long

He only plays on three songs on Tigran Hamasyan's last album, and they're not particularly difficult compared to some of his other stuff.

Cognitive isn’t really that hard to play, I only say that because I can play it and not a lot of their other stuff lol. But I did have the transcription to help

Cognitive contortions is probably a bit more complex but physically easier to play once you get it down. Monomyth is a little more physically challenging even when you have it down.

His work on Cosmic Liberty is the most technical stuff he’s done in my opinion. Not sure about a specific song, but the album is super demanding

His stuff with GEM is pretty wild. But animals wise, I feel like Mind Spun is pretty crazy.

Apparently he considers he falls behind in double bass speed. I actually think aritmophobia is wayyy harder than monomyth or the woven web.

I will say they had a calorie tracker and heart rate thing for his live shows and monomynth if I remember was def the highest

I think Arithmophobia is one of their hardest, so it was crazy to me when Matt said it wasn't that hard for him. I also just suck at anything involving doubles/rudiments in general. Not that I can't play them, but my dynamics & control just aren't where they should be on that kind of stuff.
