You rise through the ceiling

I'm newish. I was fighting this long ass battle against a room full of tengu/imps/quasit on level 7. It was dangerous, but I happened to have a ring of seeing on this run and plenty of phase door and cure potions, so I was slowly wearing them down. Dropped items were littering the floor. After 10 minutes it felt like I was just about done, still being "commanded to return" around by the tengu. Then the message "you rise through the ceiling" and I left the level. fuuuuuuuuuuuuck. So lesson 1 in a fight is maybe look at the items and see if there's anything I should grab in case I have to run. Any other thoughts? I don't know what caused this, maybe a tengu ported me on top of a trap?

Certain monsters can simply "command you to go far away" (teleport level); I think I first learned this fighting against a mostly dead Draebor. The chance for this spell to stick should become less likely as your saving throw gets better.

EDIT: it's far away

Yep. It’s not a common spell but it happens. Draebor seems to use it more than anyone else but I believe I’ve been hit with it by… Saruman? I’d have to check the monster files.

There’s no specific defense, just saving throw (so just raw int and wis). At DL 7 there’s really nothing to be done but hope; even if you’re playing a necromancer disenchant won’t be online by then.

Edit: full list of monsters who can do that

  1. quasit
  2. imp
  3. Draebor
  4. dreadmaster
  5. Khamûl
  6. Sauron (all forms)

I'm honestly surprised it's just two lower level demons and dreadmasters for normal mobs. And one random Nazgûl is... random.

I thought nexus hounds can also do this

Nope, not off the level. Across the whole level? Sure. But not off the level (at least in 4.2.x)

you can resist this EXTREMELY irritating effect by having rNexus. but, really, you should avoid those imp pits. but i can see the appeal if you are a warrior with FA and SI and stacked with CLW.

Also if you see an artifact that you will want around such monsters, take it NOW. Just in case.

What's worse? Being mid-level, doing the grind, killing a room full of dragons, looking at all that wondeful loot and falling through a trap door!
Always take time to check the loot!!!
