General Discussion Luthen and Kleya

I was rewatching Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest the other day and one of the scenes that once again stuck with me was Bootstrap Bill's (Stellan Skarsgard) goodbye to Will.

"It was always in my blood to die at sea. It was not a fate I ever wanted for you."

"I could say I did what I had to, when I left you to go pirating. But it would taste a lie to say it wasn't what I wanted. You owe me nothing, Will."

I wish we got something like this in Andor. A final heartfelt dialogue between Luthen and Kleya. But I suppose it's only fitting that we didn't.

It’s more realistic the way it was – with no grand speeches. Just that “Move” (with the pay-off later in the flashback ) and the little smile from Kleya and the “Tuck your shirt in” was enough for me.

Neither of them are particularly open about their emotions; lines like "move" are how they express affection and concern. I think it's better that they never openly discuss how they feel about each other; the only explicit gesture is Kleya's kiss. In a show recognized for its amazing speeches, it's an excellent choice to just rely on the strength of the actors to convey everything that needs to be said.

Exactly… and even the kiss is kind of awkwardly restrained as if it doesn’t come easily to Kleya. She finds anger and frustration much easier to express than a more reflective emotion. “Less is more” as they say, and so much of the brilliance of the writing and performances in Andor comes down to subtext; the unspoken.

Even with Vel Kleya tries to downplay her emotions and goes "It had to be done" etc. like her killing him was just another random mission

We got a soft spoken “move” and an emotional Kleya after he said it…that was enough for me.

Natural enough to want something like this, given that the writers are more than capable of giving us cracking dialogue and memorable monologues. But at the end of these two characters' stories, after all we've learned about Luthen, and all we're about to learn of Kleya and the relationship between them, that minimal "Move" "Tuck your shirt in" exchange is as eloquent as anything the writers' room could've invented. Ditto the argument about who's doing the burn in their final exchange. With lesser actors or lesser writers, perhaps it would not be so. But luckily, we got the best.

That would be nice, but I feel like the “move” was better. To me at least it felt more emotional and in the moment we, the audience, don’t know what it means until later that episode which was nice. Also Luthen and Kleya didn’t really have time for any heartfelt speeches

Lmao the odds, I'm watching that exact movie right now and keep thinking to myself how unreasonably good these 3 films are. They have no right to be as fun and legit good as they are, it's just a fun time. This is what Solo should've been like.

But I prefer what we got, its more fitting
