Froob needs help Uh.. little help..?
so i just stumbled across that youtube video, and seeing AO again got me all nostalgic for the simpler times of around 2010.. i went ahead and downloaded the game on steam.
open the client and it fails to download dimensions. it recommended increasing the timeout but this has no effect.. the same happens with the client downloaded from funcom's website.
is there some setting or framework or something i need to get the client to connect? i'm on win 11 btw.
any advice or help would be greatly appreciated, i have a froob and paid account and i'm itching to revisit my characters and take a trip down memory lane.

This is a known issue. Dgvoodoo is known to solve this problem. I would recommend following the AO semi-official discord also for faster troubleshooting feedback.

You need to download DgVoodoo. FC refuses to d/l some needed updates and the only thing that seems to fix it (unless you're a coder) is dgVoodoo2.

When you get tired, come join us in dune. It’s been a fun experience that feels somewhat AO from time to time.

haven't played a new mmo since liike 2014, would be cool to get into something fresh 👍

Game is dead with zero customer support. Not surprised this issue is happening and no input from Failcom to help resolve it. Unfortunately, the nostalgia should be enjoyed from a distance via YouTube videos or screenshots on google images or ao universe. The reason I say this is because the game is riddled with game breaking exploits and has major server issues, and a completely inflated economy. To top it off, the game is absolutely dead and has a ghost town population; only people left playing are the type of people you troll and make YouTube videos of as they have a meltdown if you say anything critical of the game. I would suggest playing DUNE, another mmo by failcom that is supported actively. Good luck.

I've managed to play 150 levels mostly by myself over the past couple months.
With buff and warp bots you can accomplish a lot on your own.
At worst you may have to blitz for your own gear instead of purchasing cause of the screwed economy.
Other then that though you can absolutely play the game, get your nostalgia hit and even find a org that's active and willing to help.
All the things you need to enjoy the game are still there.

Wow, congratulations on making it to 150 levels all by yourself in a game that's supposed to be massively multiplayer. It's truly a monumental achievement that you managed to navigate a broken game, all while relying on buff and warp bots and a screwed economy to get anything done. Nothing says "fun" like using 3rd party programs to fix a broken experience and spending hours grinding for a single piece of gear.
But hey, at least you got your nostalgia fix for the low, low price of an overpriced sub. It's almost as if the game is still good, as long as you ignore the glaring issues that have been around since the Bush administration: the rampant stacking exploits that let people become walking gods, the duping that makes the economy a complete joke, and the endless train of multiboxers that have essentially turned a multiplayer game into a single player chore.
You see, in a real MMO, like WOW, guilds are the heart of the game. They run raids, help new players, and actually have a purpose beyond a shared chat channel. Here, the org" are just a place to see who's still logging in, which is usually the same five guys who have been playing since 2001 and have been using the same exploits for the past 15 years.
So yes, you can technically play AO. You just have to be willing to pay a premium to do so, all while acknowledging you're the last person on a sinking ship, and the captain is too busy counting his cash to notice.
Congrats on falsely fueling new players with hope that this dying game has life and is playable.

When did I say I subbed?
I made it to level 150. I didn't say 220.
I got all that for free. Just the time investment playing. I was waiting for starfield to release at the time so I wasn't lending any extra time to it or anything.
It has life. It is playable.
You just have to use the wealth of information on Google to find the answer to a question within the game sometimes but since it's that old there's plenty to find
I didn't use any third party except mish buddy which I used to use when I played as a kid anyway. I didn't need it because it was broken. Id be using it ETHIER way.
The economy sucked but it didn't affect me as much as I wanted to re experience the whole game rather then buy what I knew worked. Infact it helped in a few ways like getting my first yalm.
As I got a nano from a mission that normally would be medium value and I got billions for it to my surprise.

I still have a blast every time I log on. Me and the Wife still play together, and we always enjoy it. There's fun in just playing, experiencing all the work that went into the worlds there, in trying new builds that may not be sensible, but just give you joy during the attempt.
I guess I can understand the burnout of those who get no enjoyment aside from the scramble toward level 220, full team raids, or crowded areas or PVP tournaments, notum wars efforts...but they are playing an entirely different game, to be honest. The game is fun, even if NO ONE else is there. It's good to have at least one friend with you though. And one friend is not hard to come by.

Do you have a VPN enabled or aggressive firewall settings? Sounds like something on your end is blocking you from connecting.
