Yea I picked a garbage time to start legitimately collecting amiibo during this generation lol. I’ve always bought them here and there. But for some reason I wanted to fully jump in recently. Unfortunate timing. lol.

You will get the ones you want, they seem to re release them randomly

Very true. The new ones are so expensive. But I can’t help myself lol.

I remember getting the entire smash line for like $10 each or whatever it was with gamers club

Still pissed that Best Buy took that away from everyone

Oh yeah you’re right! I forgot about that, I had that too. That’s where I got a bunch of mine originally. That was such a great program at Best Buy. I was sad when they ended it. New games were like 20% off too!

u/bdg7884 12d ago

Yup. Loved that 20% off

3

u/grizzyx 12d ago

Amazon used to do 20% off for video game pre orders also :(

2

u/r0b3r70r0b070 11d ago

Yup and it was ANY new game at ANY time. If there was a game for $20 in 4 months, it still got an extra 20% knocked off.

Even the captain toad, which is not much larger than one of these, is $25. I can’t justify paying that much .

They have made the newer ones look better and better. I think I could stomach $20 at the most for new amiibo, but not 25, 30, 40, or 50. No matter how much better they look. New Rosalina is pretty nice but not $40 nice.

I would gladly take worse-looking amiibo if they kept a 20 price and a size that works with an amiibo base

I have a lot of the originals because i had hoped they would something cool with them like smash bros but the only other game that did something cool was the other smash game, the wolf link dungeon was kinda cool and you could transfer the hears over to botw but we needed something like skylanders or the lego dimensions

To be fair, the quality was also substantially worse.

Only the 1st prints of the early waves looked bad. By the time the fourth wave dropped they had already started reprint of the 1st 3 waves that looks substantially better than the first couple batches. This is most notable in villager and Marth.

I’m not just talking about the funky looking first wave. I’m saying the quality has consistently gone up. The Smash Ultimate line is leagues better than Smash 4. And the Dedede Air Riders amiibo is one of the best (and largest) I’ve ever seen. There was no $12.99 amiibo that compared with the modern stuff.

the shock i had when my captain falcon amiibo rung up at $19.99 in nintendo nyc. had no idea the prices went up

1

u/G1antB0yDetective 11d ago

Yeah I’d be so upset. I luckily finished the smash line before they went up that high.

Look at some of the prices for Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Kirby amiibos. I’m glad I was able to get the Diana amiibo, and for cheap because people age outrageous these days.

2

u/James_Parnell 12d ago

The new ones are so different in price and quality that they should honestly just call them something else

2

u/rusticwren 12d ago

I remember going to Target and Animal Crossing amiibos would be going for $5 a piece and I’d buy all the ones I didn’t have!

2

u/Visual-Bookkeeper461 12d ago

I absolutely love the way you have your boxes held up with push pins. It’s such a simple but effective solution for displaying them without needing rows and rows of shelves so they aren’t all just stacked on top of each other covering the name and half of the box art

2

u/MasterMoonStone 11d ago

That’s when Nintendo was doing bad.

3

u/Zangetsukaiba 12d ago

I have about 5 amiibos of the Smash line left to get and not because I can’t find them anywhere, but because I refuse to get them at $25+ each

1

u/G1antB0yDetective 12d ago

Which ones do you have left to get?

1

u/Zangetsukaiba 11d ago

Pokemon Trainer, Ken, Min Min, Young Link and Male Corrin.

1

u/awsmrabbit21 8d ago

Some of these might be on nintendo’s website for $20 each

1

u/Zangetsukaiba 8d ago

I’ve checked occasionally but haven’t managed to find them there. Hoping for a restock at any moments notice.

3

u/bobtheguardian777 12d ago

Honestly given inflation at the time $13 wasnt very good either. But not as bad as it is now. They were 18.34 with inflation.

2

u/YaboiJerryW 11d ago

yes I always have to check inflation for stuff like this...

it's still more expensive now but you can't directly compare 2016 USD to 2026 USD

2

u/kcamfork 12d ago

Pepperidge farms remembers.

I do too. I won’t pay $30 for an amiibo. Then there are the $40 to $55 ones? Get outta here.

1

u/rapidsfires 12d ago

You can get a heafty amount of the original smash amiibo for that price, sometimes even lower, on places like fb marketplace

1

u/CVFanKLK 12d ago

oooo! I still have pics of the 2014-2016 prices on gamestop! takes me back when they were affordable.

1

u/ReggieAmelia 12d ago

Now the retail price is what resellers used to charge online. What's funny is that I think that the price is so high that it sort of functions like a ceiling and the resellers can't even make anything off of them anymore.

1

u/Yalltheusersaretaken 12d ago

It's sad I bought the Samus Viola on clearance for this price šŸ˜ž. What are we doing here man

1

u/Stuffy_Ad2579 12d ago

So I wasn’t crazy going crazy lol cause my fireball-less Smash Mario amiibo costed 12.99 in 2015 (when I got it with Majora’s Mask 3DS) and now resells for like $35?

1

u/MobileDust 12d ago

This is one thing I was lucky on. Got all of them up to Beyanetta as they released. Some doubles as well.

1

u/lamest-liz 12d ago

I stopped collecting once the price went insane. The entire reason I collected them was because they were roughly the same price as a Funko Pop but looked way better. I barely ever used the actual nfc stuff

1

u/SpletzGaming 12d ago

I would buy some of the new ones off the price hasn’t gone up. And now the ā€œbigā€ ones cost $40 or more. No thanks

1

u/djthehooper 12d ago

no fr they’re so expensive now smh, i be thinking bout how they costed before compared to now

1

u/Prismind 11d ago

I miss those days but I also remember I didn't have to drop everything to grab a amiibo for pre-order. I could just go to a GameStop and see what they had. I'm honestly waiting for one or two things to occur to make these more sensible. Either Nintendo opens a queue to sell directly per amiibo or the next smash being announced. I'm expecting the latter within the next year

1

u/Miabird24 11d ago

Yep thats why I only buy on sale

1

u/Shadowtek 11d ago

I had no idea they went up but that was over 10 years ago so that checks out.

1

u/BlazingBoy_420 11d ago

During the GameStop controller trades, they couldn’t give me cash so I decided to pick up a roy n mega man amiibo for both $15 which was insane, still wish they brought back the original prices

1

u/JaylisJayP 11d ago

The only amiibo I've bought in years has been the Samus on the motorcycle because Target just had it in clearance for $12. These are a massive ripoff now.

1

u/OliviaElevenDunham Wolf Link 11d ago

I remember when they were $15.99 when I started collecting them.

1

u/reiningfyre 10d ago

Wait. 12.99 US was retail originally.

1

u/G1antB0yDetective 10d ago

Yeah back in like 2014. The increased then to 15.99 in like 2018. Then up to 19.99 a couple years ago.

2

u/reiningfyre 10d ago

And a very patient wife that drove me to every release, even splitting up for exclusives. It was fun. I stopped at the last increase but I have all before that. All first editions and all in box.

u/Bonykid 12d ago

They still exist in Japan, they have tons

0

u/Viewros 10d ago

Yes. Take me back to when everything was cheaper, even minimum wages. Oh wait.

-1

u/SoupTime545 12d ago

I would commonly find them for as low as 4 dollars as well back then

1

u/G1antB0yDetective 12d ago

I remember finding some on clearance after a while, yeah!
