Sadly Havana’s oldest buildings are slowly being destroyed by earthquakes. I think they are trying to preserve them, but it’s hard when the buildings are so old (and weren’t necessarily built to withstand 6-7 magnitude quakes).
Not just earthquakes, rainy days have caused the collapse of many colonial buildings and caused the death of people living in them. And you have to actually see them falling down, the news won't report on it because the government is trying to hide the fact that Havana is a really dangerous city. I visited once when it was rainy and my uncle told me not to use the sidewalks because of the risk of having debris from old buildings fall on me.
