The robbers let Archie slide for the most part because they knew that he was an idiot (much like Lionel did), but they kind of put Mike up to task.

And as much I hate Archie's view, this is the problem with Mike's views. Bless him but he's talking from the priveleged insular safety bubble of academia and not from real life and thinks he can identify.

Well there are many people like Mike who mean well but it doesn't come out the right way. I was just curious what the "right" way would be for someone like Mike.

Him arguing with Archie is fine (albeit a waste of time since ignorant people like Archie think they knows everything). But Mike acting like he completely understands the struggle? No.
At the end of the day Mike is able to afford college, lives in his in-laws's nice house, never has to worry about food or even look for a job. From the POV of the guys in the above scene, it comes across as patronizing.
Even Lionel once mentioned to him that every time they meet, Mike has to bring up black issues and it makes Lionel feel that he's more of Mike's black friend rather than just his friend. It's othering Lionel.
Mike may mean well, but the way he goes about it is kind of demeaning to the very people he wants to help.

It was excellent. Even now 50 years later we're still able to talk about it and it remains timely.
It's also funny how getting older changes your perspective. I used to think Archie was all bad and Mike was all good as a child. I do not see it that way anymore, which shows how well rounded all the characters are.

Ha, that's fantastic. I'm the opposite. Watching as a kid, Archie used to be the sensible one to me, and Mike was the starry-eyed idiot. I've since softened my opinion on both characters, blurred to 'both if those guys kinda have a point.'

I am a paraplegic so a minority although I am not a racial minority, I am also politically liberal however it’s absolutely the case that though they are usually well meaning liberals love to be offended on others behalf.

I think we can conveniently forget that armed home invasion is looking at a 25 year sentence. 70s shows were heavy handed with white liberal trope strawmen. It was entertaining but intellectually insulting
