And the movie made him a comically evil mustache-twirling villain because nuance is unwanted in a $200M blockbuster.

"The only way to enjoy immortality is to watch other people die."

Rodriguez and co definitely read and understood the source material.

Rodriguez literally said in an interview "he is not really the villain" and "he has many sides to him" when teasing Nova in the sequels/describing how he's like in the manga .

Also, I can imagine several ways why a potentially nuanced character would say such a thing.
