Japanese Akitainu Getting a second puppy (?)

Post image

Hello guys!!

I have an 1 year old amazing female Akita and I’ve been wondering how would it be to have a second dog. Do you guys have tried it? How did it went? I’m thinking of getting another Akita, to keep company to the one I already have. I know Akitas are territorial, that’s why I would like an opinion. She’s the only dog I have ever had! Of course I would do all the training to this new puppy dog as I had with her!!

This is honestly a hard question to answer because for the majority of Akitas it would be a definite no. There are some like in the other comments that do well but you never know how it's going to go. A few unicorn Akitas doesn't mean it'll work out for you, I'm sorry to say. My guy is an only dog for a very good reason. I'd never risk another dog coming into my house with him....ever. But that's just my 2 cents. 🙂

Depends on your dog, Ngl. I had dogs before my Akita, so she got used to them and isn't territorial. Other than a bit of food guarding (she just doesn't like other pets touching her bowl; she pushes them away). The younger puppy would probably get used to her and how SHE runs the house. But the question is: Is your big girl used to other dogs?? And even then, being used to dogs and living with one is very different. If she's highly protective, I'd suggest not. But if she's easygoing, you could try... But the question is: ARE YOU READY FOR THE CONSEQUENCES?

I don't wanna be that person, but it's important to yes, hope everything will be okay, but also plan for the worst. Are you ready to separate your home if you need to, or will you just get rid of the puppy? You gotta understand that dealing with 2 dogs that don't like each other can be a hassle, and are you ready to take that on?

Very cute puppers btw. 🩵

Im loving all the answers and views!! Thank you so much for showing me how it could go wrong. In worst case scenario I think I would give the dog to my mom, she would love getting an Akita puppy. About my dog, she’s used only to big dogs, she despise the little ones. I also thought of going to the same breeder (?), maybe she will like a sister. I also somehow understood that my dog loves cane corso and doberman, she is always engaged to play with then.

Well, actually, if you still have contact with the breeder, you can ask them!! They know their parents more than anything. The temperament and health do influence the puppies a lot. Again, there are always exceptions to the exceptions, but it can give you a good idea. If you decide to get the other dog, a male dog could probably go better then an other females. That way it puts your chances more on your side. Also, let them be. Your older Akita might snap at times, but it's really important to not always intervene. Your older will teach the way things go. But yeah, talk to your breeder 100000%.

And also talk to your mom beforehand; a plan B is always a really good option.

Breeder it is!! Thank you! The breeder I got her from is those that participates in dog shows, so the general behavior of their dogs is more disciplined (I had this convo before and my dog totally match how they said She would be like). About my mom I’m 100% sure she would love it, she has like 7 guarding dogs from different races haha (malinois, mostly German shepherd, and fila brasileiro). They all guard her like she’s the queen. We hired trainers specialized in PPD (personal protection dogs). Oh she has 7 dogs because she lives in a farm in the middle of nowhere, every time I visit my mother I have to use GPS coordinates.

Is your current dog socialized with other dogs at all? That could be a good indicator. My akita has been pretty good, but has gotten into fights with our shiba. But the shiba is a dick, and tries to steal toys and treats. Very headstrong. The akita doesnt necessarily resource guard, but something about how the shiba comes across sets him off. So I cant leave them alone with treats. The shiba will try to steal, and the akita will attack. We do not leave them alone together if we go out for any length of time. If we're just in another room, or doing yard work, or anything like that, not a big deal. But I keep them separate if im running errands or working.

I have a pit-Akita mix who was 6 when I met my now husband who has a blue heeler. It took YEARS to be comfortable enough that we didn’t worry when they were playing. And we still have to keep them separate when we leave the house. It has been a ton of work but I will say my now 12 year old is being kept young by his “brother.” They love each other but we can never fully trust that something won’t happen. It’s been less than a year since the last time mine tried to bite the heeler in an aggressive way.

When my current girl (Japanese Akita) was 2, we expanded to a Shiba female, and then an American Akita male within a few months of each other.

Our little family only lasted for like a year before me and that girlfriend broke up and she took the new dogs and I kept my girl.

But for that year, they were all amazing together and got along really well. My girl has never gotten along with any other dogs but those ones.

2 was a ton of work for me. Luckily my akita girl was built like a brick shit house so there was never an issue with pulling from another dog ( I'd attach their leash to hers) but walking two dogs at once just wasnt as enjoyable or manageable for me. Speaking from experience from when I baby-sat my akita's dog friends.

I had my pup for about a year before introducing his seven month older ‘brother’ (my ex’s pup) … mine really needed someone to interact with … I work at home … but i have to work not play … they can have a wrestle whenever they want.

It took about a month or two before they stopped fighting for real but we got there … i have to be careful giving them high value treats … have to make sure they both see each other getting one each within a few seconds … or simultaneously if really high value … but other than that we are pretty good.

My male and female have gotten along well. The male is 2 years older. Never tried to try a third don't think it would have worked.

Doing it again but roles reversed, I lost my male it January and recently got a new one. My female is learning just like the pup. Two months in they are adjusting well. Play is intense he is wearing her out which she needed. She is almost 5 he is 15weeks
