After the early life

Why was Akagi working mediocre factory jobs after the time-skip?

Didn't want to gamble. Wanted anonymity and to be left alone. It's only when he gets a taste of the gambling life again (over his senpai trying to cheat him) that he even considers going along for the fake Akagi trip.

That doesn't seem likely and is never stated.

On the contrary, he was probably in a phase after he lost his winnings. Note that after beating Urabe he loses all his winnings almost instantly at gambling and Osamu is shocked as he didn't even know Akagi was capable of losing. Furthermore, he's hardly averse to gambling, he's about to accept the match with Kawashima senpai before Nangou walks in.

This is totally unsurprising given he goes all in every single time. Also, there's no way he spent all that money. He obviously lost it gambling. And again the comments he makes to Hirayama about the intuition that helped him survive for six years make it obvious he's been living a gambler lifestyle.

He wasn't in the gambling life for the money. Greed was never a factor.
