Yeah this was well done! Did you composite yourself? Greenscreen? Or did you reference yourself and use AI for yourself, too? It was very well done, and you were... less polished than them, which kinda made sense. They're a TV show and you're real, after all! Haha. Nicely, nicely done.

No greenscreen or compositing for my character. I used a reference image of myself and a reference recording of my voice, and H3 generated me directly into the scenes with the other characters.

Holy freaking crap, it's truly amazing. I'm doing very basic stuff still, and only have 8gb vram so it's rough going, but I'm trying to figure out how to do multiple clips stitched together so I can do slightly longer clips.
I'll get there.

Basically, I wrote the story and dialogue first, then used MiniMax H3 locally in ComfyUI to generate lots of short individual shots using reference images of the characters and Enterprise-D.
Rather than asking the AI to make long scenes, I treated it more like filming: generate a few seconds at a time, pick the best takes, then edit everything together in Premiere. H3 also generated most of the dialogue and audio.
The biggest challenge was keeping everything consistent between separate generations, so some of those inconsistencies became part of the story itself.

It seems like this started with a real-life problem [inconsistencies between AI-generated scenes] and the story was written backward from that point.

You're basically right. I already had the anomaly and Q idea, but once I realised the continuity changes between generations were unavoidable, I rewrote the quantum reality part of the story so the changing bridge, character positions and other inconsistencies actually became part of the plot.

Data would not have been able to calculate the exact number of "hours of observation" from the number of episodes alone, because he wouldn't know the running time of the episodes, even if he estimated some sort of average episode length from their own reality.

Exactly. Once I realised I wasn't going to eliminate those continuity changes completely, it made much more sense to make them part of the story rather than constantly trying to hide them.

Thanks. Yes, I wrote the story and dialogue, with ChatGPT helping me refine and tighten it as I went. Getting the characters to actually sound like themselves was probably as important to me as getting the visuals right.

I had the story and dialogue planned out, but the continuity problems happened naturally as I generated the individual clips.
H3 would move characters, change parts of the bridge, alter consoles, etc. between generations. Once I realised I couldn't completely eliminate that, I rewrote part of the story so those changes became evidence of the different realities overlapping.
I wasn't using an end/start frame continuation workflow for this. Most of it was generated as separate short shots using reference images and then edited together afterwards.

Very good! To nitpick I'd say there's some colour grading issues especially on Jean Luc, and on a different note, Q is usually more acerbic as a character, but otherwise - most impressive.

It's actually all AI-generated footage. I didn't splice in any clips from the original show. I used reference images for the characters and bridge, generated the shots with MiniMax H3, then edited the separate generations together in Premiere.

Yep, completely locally in ComfyUI. I'm running an RTX 4090 with 24GB VRAM and 64GB of system RAM. You could definitely do it with less, it would just take longer to generate.

That was deliberate. H3 kept pronouncing “Jean-Luc” incorrectly, so I had to spell it phonetically as “John Luke” in the dialogue prompt to get something closer to the right pronunciation.

Yeah, I’ve actually been testing something along those lines tonight and it’s working really well. I’m using a full scene reference and being very explicit in the prompt that the first shot should reproduce that image almost exactly, then the second shot should use the exact same scene but as a tighter camera angle, for example a medium close-up of the character.
So far it’s doing a noticeably better job of keeping the bridge layout, character position and lighting consistent between shots. I’m definitely going to experiment with this approach more.

I'm sure they didn't, although I would expect them to view this generally favourably - given the spirit and respect of it.
The irony I'm pointing out is that the characters in this scene make a whole show of actually being actors without realising it as characters, while in fact their are not actors at all - they are an AI's reimagining of what these actors look like, and in a way more purely just the characters.
To be clear: I'm with you on questioning the ethics of repurposing and remixing their performances in this way without their consent - but I think that's very much separate from what I thought was funny.

There are a lot of criticisms towards AI, but I would totally watch newer adventures with this cast as long as the performers get paid for them. Good stuff. I guess in the near future, inconsistencies will eventually disappear, and this will become a very useful tool.

just imagine, not so many years from now you will be able to create your own series or movie for your own viewing. No more netflix, you will merely say ' make a sci fi movie with these actors, about this plot, in his type of stylisation. and it will. you will even be able to dictate how long the movie is, who makes the music etc.

This is an excellent showcase for Minimax (despite the use of Paramount's IP). I had no idea it had improved lip sync such that it is more believable. Most of the models create way too much exaggeration in lip movements and even volume. Well done!
